Downloading/Transferring Digital Photos

It's entirely possible that we'll shoot so many photos on our 7-day cruise that our digital camera's memory card will fill up after a few days. Is there somewhere on the ship where we can transfer or print the photos...thus freeing up our memory card to shoot more photos?

The only solutions I can think of is to bring a card reader, a laptop or extra memory cards. We are going with the extra memory card route.

The only way I can think of is if the internet cafe has accessible USB ports on the computers, but I don't know if they do. If so, you could plug into one and email the photos to yourself - I guess the computers would also have to have an acceptable client for opening digital pics. However, for the cost of using the internet cafe, you could just buy another memory card!

I just bought a 256MB card, which gives me enough memory for about 110 pics at 5 megapixels. I also have a 128MB and (2) 64MB memory cards, so I think I can shoot close to 200 pics at full resolution. I hope it's enough!!

Anybody know if the internet computers on board have USB ports?

Bring a laptop. You will shoot more than 200 pics with a digital camera. Even if you have to rent one for the week, it is worth it.

On our first Disney cruise we shot nearly 1000 digital pics, deleting about 300 while on-ship. To store that many at 5 megapixel would have cost $$$ in SD cards. For the $$$ you will save using your DC on film, processing (and Shutters too) a laptop is worth it - and it don't take up a lot of room in the suitecase (about the same as a folded pair of pants).

If you want to buy new one with OS, you can get a decent notebook for about $530 delivered (i.e. - DELL LATITUDE - Pentium III 750 MHz, 14.1 TFT, 128 Mb, CD-ROM, w/ Dell warrantee)

In June, you could not upload pics to the Internet Cafe machines. I don't know what the current policy is.

I found SAMSCLUB to be a terrific source of backup flash memory.

I believe we got a 256mb flash card for about $40.

I wouldn't travle without backups (when I go out on a fishing trip they make me take a back up card so the others don't get ruined.)

either option of buying extra memory or bringing your laptop. Memory is coming down in price quite a bit now.... but we still bring our laptop with us. Jacqui likes to watch DVD's on the plane and I like to play the games when I wake up early and don't want to bother her or if I can't sleep...Hopefully, that won't be the case on the ship!!! Plus I figure I can do my trip report day by day right into Word...

I'd go even further to say there are no accessible pc's onboard. The Internet Cafe stations consist of a LCD monitor, keyboard, mouse, headphones, and webcam.

The extra memory card is the best option, if that's all you need to do; it is almost impossible for the memory to go bad. I have never had one go bad and I have left pictures on some for a very long time.

If you're really worried but still don't want to bring a notebook along, there is a device from Iomega called a PhotoZip that will read them off the memory card onto standard Zip disks.

Or, you can bring along a notebook if you want.

Dave - I figured as much, as far as the USB ports, but it doesn't hurt to ask! I couldn't imagine Disney giving you that kind of access to their computers.

I expect I will bring a laptop as well, but I think I have enough memory cards to cover me.

This is our 4th Disney cruise, so I doubt we will need more than that. I don't need to take pictures of all the same stuff again, just the unique new things. Also, I am sure I will shoot several hours of digital video as well!!

I have found that memory card prices aren't much different from place to place. (Memory Sticks for Sony cams.) Even Sam's Club and Costco charge as much as Target or Best Buy. $69.00 for the 128MB, $119.00 for the 256MB.

are you taking cards or the Sony memory sticks?

I found that Lexar also makes for less money.

I just ran a search on Amazon.com and they have brand new 128meg one for 39.95 with a $10 mail in rebate.

I have been using one for the last year with no problems. I also have 2 64meg Sony's which I paid a lot more money for.

we've determined that you can't use the cruise computers to save digital images to a CD or to e-mail them to your account, but what about the camera/photo store on board ship? can they print digital photos from a memory card and can they save the photos to a CD at the time of processing?
