Down the road a bit from vaccination...

I have all ready said previously in another forum that I will not change my eating habit just because I have to ask someone....

“Yes, 5 mickey waffles with whipped cream and a glazed donut please.. what, you don’t think that is proper for an adult or something?”

My son divides his plate in half for bacon and chocolate glazed donuts. Vacation judgement free zone is my motto.

That's my kids too. In November last year, we got off our last cruise and had a day at Beach Club, and the next morning went to Cape May Cafe for a breakfast buffet. One of my twins literally cried when he learned they didn't have donuts like the cruise ship!

I just saw an article in the New York Times entitled "How 700 Epidemiologists Are Living Now, and What They Think is Next." Some of their insights were really sobering, and I have to admit, kind of sad. Here are some of them:

“The new normal will be continued masking for the next 12 to 18 months and possibly the next few years. This is a paradigm shift.”
Roberta Bruhn, co-director, Vitalant Research Institute
“It’s hard for me to imagine that it will ever go back to our previous ‘normal,’ but I do think that new preventive measures that we’ve had to adopt, like masks, will feel normal in time. In that sense, I’m optimistic that life will settle into a new kind of normal.”
Marilyn Tseng, assistant professor, Cal Poly
“I expect that wearing a mask will become part of my daily life, moving forward, even after a vaccine is deployed,” said Amy Hobbs, a research associate at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

These are some of the experts. Kind of eye opening that they don't seem to think the vaccine will help us return to normal anytime soon.

People are people and they have short memories. The moment that the mask requirement drops, so will most of the mask being worn. There will be some who will still wear them. People don't always do what their Doctors tell them to do and you can tell that from all of us who over eat unhealthy food, those that smoke, those that don't get enough exercise, those that over drink or those that do drugs. All of the "experts" aren't taking human behavior into consideration and I think we will be back to "normal" with a few modifications.

Interesting. I recently saw another quote about peoples' short memories:

"Our children and grandchildren will shake their heads in amazement that the adults – the “adults” – of 2020 were so credulous as to fall for the hysterical overstatements and the deceits and duplicity used to justify this tyranny. They will be aghast that in 2020 so many reporters, pundits, and politicians swallowed whole and without question the over-the-top predictions of mad scientists such as Neil Ferguson and his Imperial College colleagues. The jaws of our progeny will drop from puzzlement when they ponder the news media’s atrociously poor and biased “reporting” on Covid-19. And our descendants will simply resign themselves to being unable to understand fully how and why we allowed ourselves to be engulfed by such tyranny.

And then our children and grandchildren will pat each other on the back, confidently relieved by their knowing that they will never be so gullible as were those of us in 2020."

This person clearly considers this all a big ol' conspiracy... I respectfully disagree that the mask mandate can be compared to "tyranny" or inhibits our freedoms in any way that having to wear pants in stores or not smoking within 50 feet of an entrance does. Nothing was swallowed without question, and frankly our kids are going to find plenty to shake their heads about either way (they're already doing it with our outdated environmental views and tolerances of lifestyles). Then their kids will judge them and on and on. :rolleyes1

I think mask mandate does, by definition, inhibit our freedom. I realize that the overwhelming majority of people favor them. But, I think there is a big difference between wearing pants and being compelled to put a barrier between your face and the air that you breathe.

Bear in mind that the mask mandate means that those who will not comply can not participate in contemporary society in any fashion and that the government can use all of the tools at its disposal (fines, imprisonment, etc.) to force compliance.

Speak for yourself! Pants are genuinely wayyyyyy more uncomfortable for me (and my :figment:shaped belly) than a face mask. I (and I know for a fact I am not alone in this) have taken advantage of the zoom work environment to wear pajama bottoms 24/7 since spring. If it were socially acceptable, I'd go pants-free and just wear undies/pajama shorts everywhere!

Also, technically, a mask is not a barrier to air, just a barrier to droplets. Air can and does move freely between your face the air around it when wearing a mask.

I know everyone has their own opinion on this. I have even been told by people who know nothing about me that I don't care about other people if I won't wear a mask.

That's why I chose pants... you can very much get into trouble and fined for not wearing them in a public setting! :)

Unfortunately (and to get the thread back on track) I definitely think masks will continue for awhile post vaccine, though I hope my office doesn't open back up until they are not stringently required. All my concerns get thrown out the window if I could have it off while seated at my desk alone, and put it on when I move about or interact with others.

I don't see buffets coming back until we have zero concern for transmission again. Maybe they will disappear for a decade and come back in a throw back sense themed to the 2000s?

I think once people find out they have to still wear masks after the vaccine, that will be the last straw.

So, if the vaccine roll out were to have the desired effect (such as the threat of spread of Covid 19 being similar to the threat of common cold, yearly flu, norovirus), would cruises (and the restaurant industry in general) revisit the buffet? Or is the buffet basically done no matter the eventual outcome of the vaccine's ability to control the disease?

I LOVE buffets but have seen so many disgusting things that I'd have NO problem if a CM had to serve us all the time.

The only part that bums me about losing the buffet is my ability to truly take a LITTLE bit of something. I have a very hard time wasting food once its on my plate.. :headache:

Why not ask for a very small amount? That's why I intend to do. Sometimes I only want a spoonful for a taste.

In my experience, at "buffets" that are served cafeteria-style, a "small" amount (or "just a little") is a full (serving) spoonful.

I don't think it's a problem to get them to give you the amount you want. If it's a big old serving spoonful, I wouldn't take it. Not that difficult.

I think it’s more likely they will look at us the way we look at our parents and grandparents who smoked and drank while pregnant and rode around in cars without seatbelts and think how could they have been so reckless and uneducated on basic safety. I‘d hedge against people who think the equivalent of ”no shirt, no shoes, no service“ is tyranny in history’s eyes.

Could be. They also may wonder if there was any edict the masses wouldn't follow. They could even think "So, let me get this straight. They were told to get vaccines for the virus. And, then, that they might still be contagious, so they were told to continue wearing masks and social distancing? And all the while, some of the same people making and supporting the mandates were openly flouting them? And they went along with it? Wow!"

They honestly think they are doing us a favor... my husband and I still joke about that awful line they use at the welcome show "if you see it, eat it".

I miss the jokes about the way the toilets on the cruise flush, and the stats on how many gallons of ice cream, how many cups of coffee and so on were consumed.
