double post

I'm with Allstate. About a month ago, I got sick of hearing the Geico ads so I went to their site and got a quote. It was for $600 MORE than we currently pay. So much for saving 15% in 15 minutes. I'll stick with Allstate.

Your house insurance may go up, if you are getting a bundled type discount. We have progressive, have had them for years and have been very satisfied. Had an accident, the car was totaled, they met us on the scene to help with a rental and we had a check within 5 days. Another accident (i have only ever had 2), the car was drivable and they came to my office the next day to give the appraisal also, check came very quickly. You do not have to use their body shop, like you do with State Farm and some others.

You have to use a certain body shop with State Farm :confused3 That is the insurer that we have right now.

We are getting a $42 discount on our homeowners' for having a "bundled" policy, so I'm taking that into account when I shop around. I'm more worried about State Farm taking away our umbrella policy if we move our auto policies. Can they do that?

Our car insurance is cheaper with Geico, but house wouldn't be. When I talked to someone at Geico they told me that another company actually does the house insurance not them.

I've had to file one claim in 15 years, and they responded very quickly. Came out to my house to inspect the car and sent me a check shortly after.

I too have Allstate covering my home and car. I also priced Geico and Progressive. WOW :earseek: Could not believe how much more it was. Yea, I probably could save with them if I upped my deductible to unbelievable highs or dropped my coverage down so low it would not even be worth it to have insurance!!!

I have Progressive for my car, boat and 4-wheeler insurance and love them. Recently, our motor burned up on the boat and we called Progressive to open a claim. We wanted to have a claim opened before we brought it to the mechanic in case it was caused by something covered in our policy. Well, without batting an eye, they approved the claim and paid over $2000 to repair the motor.

Just recently, we were in the parking lot of a drug store and my husband was half-way backed out of his spot when the woman behind him started backing out. He stopped and layed on the horn, but didn't have time to put it in drive and pull back up so she hit us. Well, she scraped up the paint on the back of her car pretty bad and all we had was a small scrape above the bumber. The first thing she said was "Well, it's kind of both our faults". I said, "No, my husband stopped and was blowing at you, but you continued to come out." So, we called the police and since it was in a parking lot, it was considered no fault. I immediately called Progressive and reported it and told them that under no circumstances should they pay for her damages. Well, they got a copy of the report and came out to look at our vehicle. A few weeks later we got a letter from them saying that they had reviewed everything and were closing the claim without paying out anything. The next week, the woman's insurance contacted us saying that they were going to pay half and that our insurance would have to pay the other half. My husband called Progressive and they told us that they had closed the claim and were not going to pay anything. I've never had an insurance company look out for my best interest before and it felt good. When we had Allstate, my husband tapped the back of a Corvette at a stop sign. They didn't call the police since there was very minor damage and just exchanged insurance - big mistake. The Corvette people sued our insurance and claimed injury to three people when there was only one person in the car and a Corvette is a two-seater! Allstate didn't even try to fight it - they just paid and my insurance went up for years after that.

Anyway, we switched to Progressive even though we had a home/auto discount with our previous carrier but it was still cheaper in the long run.

I hate Progressive. I had my dd insurance with them when she was in college. She got the good student discount at the time we got the insurance. It was paid at that time in full with a credit card. Apparently, there was a glitch in the good student discount. They sent her a letter to send in an updated transcript within so many days (forget how many). She never got the letter, so she never sent the transcript. They cancelled the insurance and sent her a notice. She never received this. They sent a refund check. She never received this either. She had an accident. Luckily, her's was the only car involved (totaled) and no one was injured. We only had liablity so we never even called the insurance company as we didn't want it on her insurance record and she wasn't cited. We found out about the no insurance when she got another car and she called to change her vehicle info with the insurance company. Appears, her address was entered into the computer incorrectly and they did receive all of the mail they sent her back, but no one ever followed up. She had no insurance and nobody knew.

Some umbrella carriers will not write a policy when the primary/underlying automobile liability coverage is with a different company. It would be best to check with your umbrella carrier/agent about this. I am an independent insurance agent representing Progressive and we rarely receive a complaint about them.

Well I used to have Geico(10 years of coverage) and then my car got stolen. I was paying high premiums because of the car I had and then had HUGE hassels with them to get them to pay. Luckily my car had just been in for an inspection with photos a day before the theft. So I had great time sensitve photos to argue with. And argue I had to. First problem. My car got broken into- steering column broken. Report that- sending guy out to see the car in 2 days.. Well the next day they come back and the thiefs tow the car away(they reallllllly wanted it I guess) Well first they made me pay 2 deductables(they said 2 separate incidents...when I pointed out that if they had allowed me to get photos myself of the damage at a shop the car wouldn't have been stolen..they got rude. The woman dealing with me got so rude in fact that I ended up reporting her. I was dealing with supervisors after that and got the service I thought I deserved. I was given an acceptable amount after 2 months of fighting with the first person. But then my rates jumped like you wouldn't believe on the other car on the policy. I was able to get better coverage at a better rate with another company so I dropped them. My situation was more of a one person issue- but I bet they have a "heavy" everytime they have a big claim. (I felt like it was good cop/bad cop game)

We had a bundle policy and decided to switch our life insurance. When we did, our auto went way up, so we had to switch that too. Making changes to a bundle package does make a difference!

We use Farm Bureau and have been more than happy--auto, motorcycle and home--heck, our motorcycle went from $75 a mth w/ Progressive to $18 w/ Farm Bureau. (same coverage amts too)

Here is my Progressive story and why I will never go through them. Our ins was due--so I called in and made a pymt---well-2 wks later, I get a cancelation notice--so I called the bank and made sure the pymt had been posted--and it had---so I called Progressive--after nearly an hour of argueing w/ the people and offering to get the info needed from the bank--they finally said that even though it was their mistake we still had to pay extra to reinstate! well--dh told them to forget it--to refund the $$ and he'll get his insurance elsewhere and hung up on them. For 4 HOURS our telephone rang every 15 min and hung up after we answered or they would let the phone just ring and ring. When we called the #'s back from caller ID--it was always Progressive. So we called in to complain---nothing--the phone calls cont.---we had the persons name and ext that we had talked to and had given it to a supervisor but nothing happened and he cont. calling. We were in the middle of moving from our home so we unhooked the phone and finally hooked it back up 4 days later (had to have the phone comp. out because the line was messed up at our new home) so thats how the phone calls stopped. But then a few mths later--after STILL NO credit--we get a call from a collections agency over the bill---needless to say--we talked to our attorney who handled the matter but there is NO WAY IN HECK we will ever go back to Progressive!!!!!!!!!! Not to mention--Im paying full coverage on 2 BRAND new cars and a new motorcycle and my insurance is almost HALF what I was paying through Progressive!!!!!!!!

Different insurers have arrangements with different repair shops. For USAA--we get our choice of two around here and have used the same one twice and are quite happy with their work. I think it is to get you to avoid Maaco type places--if they are going ot repair the work, they want it repaired properly. Nothing against Maaco--but I can understand why an insurer would do this.

I had Progressive for 4 years, and they were pretty good. I had 2 accidents, and both times, they were great about getting my truck fixed. I had to switch to Allstate after my last accident. The insurance adjuster found out I was on the Fire Department, and said Progressive will not cover firefighter / EMTs, as they consider us to be a higher risk

Allstate has also been very good, although about 150/yr more than Progressive.

I worked for Progressive for Nine Years in the Claims Department. I think they do a great job on claims. Sounds like some people have had some issues with their payment department. Their prices are higher for some people and lower for others. It doesn't hurt to check it out and see. In regards to the original question about the umbrella policy not being valid if the auto policy is changed, you should review the wording of the umbrella policy and check with your agent. The umbrella policy probably states that you have to have certain minimum amounts of coverage on your auto policy but it may or may not stipulate that the auto coverge has to be with a certain carrier. Of course, as others have stated, you will in all likelihood lose your bundle discount.

I also work for an independent agency and I agree with the above. If you do consider going with Progressive, I'd recommend going through an agent rather then through their 1-800 #. It's the same product, but if you have a problem you can let your agent handle it rather then dealing with beaurocracy. That address mistake someone mentioned would never have happened with one of our clients--we watch out for our people.

Admittedly I'm biased, but I'd never go with Geico. I don't want to deal with random customer no-service people when I have a problem, I want someone who will help me. We've had clients who went to Geico on price and ended up coming back because of service issues. That's not to say that Geico is bad because I don't know, I'm just stating my personal preference.

I've had Progressive w/ no claims so don't know about their service that way.

I had Geico w/ an old car and had great service when my husband was involved in a crash. We recently switched from Progressive back to Geico and saved a big chunk of change.

Bought both policies (Progressive and Geico) online and have had no problem with either and go for coverage/price. My experience has been positive even without a bricks and mortar office/agent.

We have Geico, and couldn't be happier with them. Thankfully, neither DH nor I has had to make a claim since we have had them, but friends of ours who have made claims have nothing but good things to say about the service. The 4 times our policy has been renewed our premiums have decreased (although it helps that we have some factors on our side - turning 25, getting married, NY State premiums going down in general) despite DH getting a speeding ticket. Our homeowners insurance is through All State, they were cheapest for us. All State quoted our car insurance as well and even with the multiline discount we would have qualified for, they came out more than twice as much. We'll stick with Geico for now, thanks ;)

We have had Amica for over 25 years (car and home) and still love that company. I highly recommend it (and so does Clark Howard!)

Amica is not the cheapest, but it is the best. :cool1:

Had Progressive for a few years, no complaints at all.

Was in an accident with someone insured with Geico-it took 2 years to get repair money from them, after $6,500 in attorney fees. The judge ruled in our favor-if Geico would have given us half of what was requested, they would have saved quite a bit in fees by trying to cheap out on a claim.

Had Erie insurance in Ohio-was great to work with-had to switch when we moved to KY as Erie does not write policies in KY. Now have Allstate-was broadsided by an uninsured driver last year-had the repair done with no questions asked and my rate actually was reduced after the 1st year as no at fault claims were filed-even with the uninsured accident.

Overall we have been happy with insurance-but would not touch Geico with a 10 foot pole.
