double drop luggage at MCO

Can anyone explain to me how this system operates and can it be avoided.Long time since we've arrived at MCO ( last few times it's been Sanford) and I remember some confusion about luggage being dropped twice on arrival ( picking it up only to place on carousel again)!.Is this still the case?

You are now allowed to take your luggage on the monorail with you but obv you have to be able to carry it all.
We always do this to avoid the dreaded ''2 drop and wait and wait and wait''

On the monorail? No. You have to be able to carry everything.

There is actually someone standing at the bottom of the escalator next to the second bag drop, telling you to leave your sky carts there. See if you can find a way to pack cleverly. It's only on the flight over there that you have to think about this. When you fly home again you don't have this problem.

That would be us LOL. I believe they introduced this (last year or was it the year before?) due to the number of requests/complaints about the second luggage drop and the ridiculously long time the 2nd pick up takes. I remember landing in a thunder storm a few years back and due to them shutting the airport during every over head storm we waited over an hour maybe more for the 2nd luggage pick up.

I am so grateful they started allowing luggage on the monorail.

Well I will be one of those people this year I have served my time of waiting in excess of half an hour for my luggage to get to the next terminal. I don't see a problem with it as nobody is walking on the escalator. I heard there is a lift there too, but I have never noticed.

There is a lift, but they don't tend to grant you access to it unless you have a wheelchair or other mobility issues.

If you can avoid picking up a trolley cart I would do so! One year, we had the luggage on the trolley, but it wasn't too much for one of us to handle, while the other pushed the wheelchair, but because we turned up to the monorail escalator with everything on it, they made us unload onto the conveyor belt.

Our May trip was easy since we didn't have the wheelchair. September however, we will have it again, so I am going to try and avoid picking up a trolley so we don't have to wait forever for the luggage. If all else fails and there's no way around it, I will send mum and sister to sort out the car hire while I wait endlessly for the bags lol!

It was so big it didnt really fit the escalator and he held it at an angle all the way up before dropping it at the top and gasping for breath.

At first when you said that I was like OMG that really IS us LOL LOL Our cases are electric blue and one is very large-has to go on at an angle. However my husband is a weight lifter so even at 32kgs our cases are no worries for him, he wouldn't of been puffing LOL. Funny thought, I really thought you could of been talking about us.

I think that is an example of why they might not be too pleased with huge cases on there. It isn't the widest escalator either. But my main concern with that is, when you get to the top if the person in front of you suddenly stops (to drop a heavy case), it could cause some nasty pile-up style accidents on the escalator. Even my DD has been taught that you NEVER stop immediately at the top. Always step aside first.

Also a good idea to allow some space i.e. 3 or 4 steps between you and the person in front to allow for any ''mishaps'' that can occur. People + luggage + escalator can be a fun game, large suitcases or not.

Precisely. This is why I always let my daughter get on first so that I can allow some space between us. That way, if she did happen to fall, or stall, the extra steps give some time for me to 'clear' her from the exit and avoid possible accidents.

Of course there are always those who love to be affectionate and insist on standing right against your back. Honestly, I think these are the kind of folk where if there were a seat on the escalator, they would be sitting you your lap!

Well we probably should - but it is more a case of one sided affection and it aint coming from my side.

Anyway, bottom line is that if you can possibly carry your own bags, you can avoid the second drop. If you are able to do this, you will save a whack of time. If not, check out the airport map so you know where to go to have coffee and a bite to eat. Or smoke if applicable to you.
