Door Magnets - Why Laminate???

Hi everyone,

Now that I'm back from the Dream, here's a question for everyone - why do you laminate your magnets?

All I did for our magnets was print off the cutest pictures I could find onto cardstock, cut them out and then place magnetic strips on the back. It looked just like the laminated ones, just not laminated (if that makes sense).

The one problem may have been wrinkling, but I put them between magazine pages in the suitcase so they didn't get crumpled during travel.

Instead of having a huge amount of magnets on the door at 1 time, I rotated them throughout our cruise and the ones I didn't use on the main door, I stuck to our connecting door so that we could enjoy them in our room. I kind of had themes (Disney Dream the first day, old-fashioned Mickey Mouses the 2nd day, Disney Princesses the 3rd day).

At the end of the trip, I left them on the door - if the cabin steward wanted them he could take them, or just throw them away.

PS - it was really fun putting the magnets out and seeing other people stop and look at the door and comment :)

That's an easy answer ... So you can reuse them again on your next cruise!

People laminate them instead of printing on card stock. If they use plain paper, it's easier to hang if laminated. Another alternative is to print on magnetic paper.
Either way is fine but please clean your door when you leave. While our cruises are such a special time for us, it's just another day at work for CMs. Leaving all that on the door for them to clean just gives them another chore to do while trying to quickly turn the cabin around for incoming guests. :goodvibes

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 I was housekeeping staff for a hotel WAY WAY back in the day, and pulled a few "rescue shifts" while working in Yellowstone National Park. I ALWAYS clean up after myself in the hotel room, because its really frustrating to have to pick up the OBVIOUS crap that people leave. I would not DREAM of leaving magnents, or other decorations on the doors for them to clean up after me.

We were near an elevator, and I wanted my magnets to be more sturdy. It worked for us. Glad that non-laminated ones worked for you!

Okay, so I'm craft illiterate so bare with me here. I don't have a laminating machine so are there laminating things to use with the help of an iron perhaps? A friend of mine suggested perhaps contact paper? (which I find difficult to use) and putting magnet strips on the back. I've no idea how much magnetic paper costs, can anyone advise?
Thoughts? Thanks!

You can buy laminating "pouches" or "sleeves" that do not require a laminating machine, or actually any heat source for that matter. I have purchased them at Wal-Mart and find them very easy to use. I probably can't describe them very well, but they are much more user-friendly than contact paper (no bubbles or funny creases in the finished product). It's like a folded up sheet of plastic and half of it is sticky with a backing that must be removed. Place your paper inside, peel off the backing, press down.

I am sorry, but I am totally blanking on the brand name right now. I think maybe Scotch/3M (?) Whatever the brand name, I do remember that the red packages are for the laminating machine and the purple packages are the heat-free ones.

Found it ...

Scotch Self-Sealing Laminating Pouches.

This link is for the business card size, but at my local Wal-Mart they come in a variety of sizes, up to 9x12 that will easily laminate a full size sheet of paper.

I usually get the big ones and then cut them to the size I need. You can place several smaller designs into the same pouch all at the same time and then cut them apart after you seal it.

how can I do this i have seen some really cute pics of the ship and kids names and dates!Ii would love to do this but have no idea where to star! I would love one on our door that says my kids names and something like where dreams come true and the date of our cruise.

I take mine to the local print shop and have them do them.

I have bought from both of these. It may be more expensive than laminating but it's just so easy and I re use them often. I like that Amazon doesn't charge shipping or tax. Well, I belong to Amazon Prime so it's 2 day shipping free. Even without AP, it's easy to reach $25.
I buy from the other site when I need to buy in bulk; like our last cruise with 6 cabins to decorate.

I just printed my pics on photo paper and glued magnetic sheets to the back and then cut them out.

We print ours out on the cheaper paper at Kinkos (their printers are much better) or Office Depot...then I put them in that heater laminator thingie...altogether it costs me less than $5 for 5 license plate style magnets...I just get the strip magnets and sticky them on the back..we reuse them and just put the new 'license expiration' date on them...so we can use them for years! :)

Hoping for a response!
We are sailing May 15th. I want to decorate our door, but I am really challanged with computers. I tried to post (two times) on another thread that has all the stateroom door ears and things. I can't seem to figure out how to print the designs. When you are decorating your door, where are you getting all of your cute things?? Is anyone really good at printing the stateroom ears?? My kids would love the door decorated. The trip is a surprise so they can not help me.
Thanks for your help

If I can do this anyone can! Very good instructions on this thread, found some ideas from the design threads but you can also google images & personalize them.

Has anyone tried the picture sleeves that go on the refrigerator at home? No laminating, just slip the picture in and go. I've seen them at the checkout at my local Ben Franklin's store, in several sizes.
