DON'T Read This TRIP REPORT If You're a Princess Hater!

Just found out a bit of trivia about this float. . . Since I know you're a big fan of Magic Kingdom parades, you know this float appears in nearly every parade. I was a CM on the college program in 1993 and I worked in Frontierland so our breakroom was near the parade float storage building. For some reason I remember this float being in that building, so I always notice it when I see it in pictures. The other day I read that it was first used in a parade in 1986 for the WDW 15 year anniversary! I guess Disney has gotten their money's worth out of that float!

And my favorite parade shot? Is anyone surprised?????

5539423813_4d7c48cdfe_z.jpg

Perfect timing on this shot - absolutely beautiful! Can't miss with a shot of Cinderella in front of her castle!

I also love the outlaw Katie photo - your posed shots are stunning as always, but I'm a sucker for the candid and fun shots too :)

Thanks for the great story of the princess photo shoot. Pixie dust was plentiful that night in the Princess tent - free candy and a room full of princesses and princes - what more could a girl (and her mom) ask for?

I got so behind, and I can't remember all I was going to say now.
I love all the photos. All of the parade shots are so great. Did you use a tripod for those and the firework shots?
Love the Dwarves shot. I would've probably said something to the people in the 2nd line too. I can't beleive they got nasty. But imagine how mad they would've been if they waited and realized it when it came time to see the Dwarves.
How do you carry all your stuff? Do you bring a duffle with the costumes and keep some stuff in a locker?
Also what kind of camera bag do you have. I have a backpack, but it is just too heavy, so I also have a smaller bag for the parks. The one I had was basic and getting junky so for X-mas of 2009 I got a new one. I like it, but haven't had a chance to test it out for a real trip yet. I have used it on one of Claire's field trip days, and it kind of got heavy after several hours. I guess I'll find out soon how happy I am with the choice soon.

WOW! I am just catching up on your trip report. I have enjoyed it so much! Your costumes are phenomenal!! And your photos are fantastic. I really have enjoyed reading all about your trip. You have just sold me on bringing my DSLR to Disney in August (really, what's another 28 lbs to carry when you already feel you're about to stroke out from the heat):rotfl2: I was sort of set on bringing my G10, but your pictures are just so incredible that I know I will be sorry if I don't bring the 40D or maybe the Mark II.

Did you use your external flash dialed back for all of your lowlight pictures. The quality is great and I was wondering if you didn't use a flash, if you ran them through noiseware.

Can't wait to see more. By the way, your daughter is absolutely stunning! A classic beauty. No wonder the fairy godmother remembered her.

First, thank you so much for the kind comments on Katie! :lovestruc

It is a pain to carry a larger camera around, especially if you bring multiple lenses and a tripod. Still, I also know that I'll regret not bringing home a bunch of photos of all the beautiful things I see at Disney.

I gave a lot of thought to how to photograph the Christmas parade. I even started a thread in the photography forum here on the DIS last summer to see what all the experts there thought. I had been to the Christmas party in 08 and loved the shots I took with no flash, but knew there were some floats, and some characters that were not lit well enough to get a good shot without some flash. I tried to find that thread to post here, but found it had been merged into an 85 page super thread on flashes. Anyway, if you want to see the discussion, it's on this page starting with post 1101:

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2210346&highlight=mvmcp+mom2rtk&page=74

There was actually a variety of opinions on how to handle it. I didn't come away with a consensus at all. So I decided there was no perfect answer. I watched what was coming toward me and turned the flash on and off depending on the situation. I had the flash exposure compensation dialed back to -1.

I did use the noise reduction function on Lightroom 3 for most of those shots.

So enjoyed seeing the most recent day... All of the amazing holiday :santa: pixie dust!! Sharing in the photos, dresses and character meetings is so great - thanks for the nice break away from my DH and the NCAA tourney games... after 3 hours I had to retreat to my laptop and get caught up! And I love hoops, but clearly not more than WDW :lovestruc

I'm glad you decided to hang out here when you needed a break from the hoops! :dance3: Thanks for all the nice comments! Nothing like a little girly fun to break up the sports!

I really couldn't have asked for anything more. It was an awesome evening. :goodvibes

Thanks for the behind the scenes history on the parade float! I knew it had been around a long time, but had no idea it had been THAT long. How cool that you got to work at Disney in the College Program! I kid Katie about that. Who knows if she'd do it, but wouldn't that be fun?????

And thanks for the kind comments on the photos. I got off 5 or 6 shots of that carriage and was holding my breath looking through them for just ONE with them both looking my way. I was really quite happy to have gotten it. :goodvibes

Hey Jen! First off..........

:banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:

For being down to TEN days! You really deserve a lot of pixiedust :wizard: on this trip just for SHEER perseverance!

I carry a backpack and a totebag most days in the park. The backpack has my camera stuff and the tote bag has anything else we want to bring. We usually get a locker and stop off there to put anything we're not using right away...... jackets, blanket, tripod, costumes for later in the day. We usually make it back in the afternoon to swap out for anything we're done with and to pick up the tripod if needed. I purposely shopped for a tripod that was lightweight and folded up nice and small, just for our Disney trips.

The fireworks pictures are definitely done with a tripod. They require longer shutter speeds. Most of mine were 4 or 5 seconds long. The Christmas parade is not done on a tripod. Since the parade is moving, the key is to get the ISO high and get a fairly fast shutter speed. As I mentioned above, I dialed the flash down and used it on some of the shots.

As for the "dwarf incident".......... I was really back and forth on whether to say anything. I was pretty sure we were in the right spot. But they were closer over to where all the traffic was. And when a few other people started joining their line, I decided I had to say something. We had been there for about a half hour in the bitter cold already.

Hi everyone! I just wanted to let you know I put an index on the first page. Maybe that will help anyone new joining in. :goodvibes

:thumbsup2 Thanks for that! I've been lurking a bit on your TR recently, but I know I've missed a lot. I absolutely love all these dresses and that Katie is still into doing this. Your pictures are wonderful. :)

Hello and........... :welcome:

Thanks for the nice comments and for joining in the girly fun! I'm glad the index helped!

So I see you have the G10, I just got the G12... how do you likes yours for travel? Apparently you still are not happy with the quality if you are thinking of switching to your DSLR, I wish I had a smaller DSLR the Nikon D2X is just TOO big for travel. My friend Jenn has the nikon 300 that she might bring but I'm trying to tell her to bring a point and shoot and enjoy her time

I think I have read that you like the gowns and are not sure about making short stuff, but I am wondering if you have ever or did make any fairy costumes??? Or is Katie not really into them?

I ask because my DD4, Syd is SO into Rosetta and would love to show her anything you have done. Luckily in 2009 the Disney Store sold a very cute Rosetta costume with layered fabric petals and matching to die for strappy shoes. Last spring she wore it to a late night Rosetta meeting which was so AMAZING. Now that is is a bit too short I will check ebay for another bigger size for our next trip - I just hope she's still into Rosetta...

I have really struggled, as over the course of the last year she went from being all about princesses and fairies to being SO into Barbies! :sad2: Darn preschool room at daycare... A bunch of those little ladies have older sisters and now Barbies are all the rage... how could the princess phase be over already and she's not even 5!??!?!

Sorry, I do not mean to hijack your fun TR with a sad mama my baby is growing up too fast story!!

Katie would make a lovely Silvermist :) and that's a long dress too!!

Your pictures are amazing. The shots of the fireworks are great and I  the picture of Cinderella and Prince charming in the coach in front of the castle. That should be in an add for MVMCP.

I'm so excited to finally read the back story to that fabulous picture you have in your signature. What a great experience, ahh - the magic of Disney. I love how Katie is a quick change artist - it can't be easy getting into those fabulous gowns. That picture of Katie with the guns is a great shot.

I think Katie would be a shoe in for a job with Disney. Think of all the experience she has wearing beautiful princess dresses. Your scrapbooks could be her resume!

I love reading your TR and seeing all the dresses and outfits you made they are beautiful. My question to you is how many bags do you end up taking with you on your trip with all these beautiful dresses?

Okay... I'm a slacker, but I have finally caught up! YAY. I can't believe that we were there the same time but we had a completely different touring plan! :confused3

Mary Poppins is certainly one of my favorites and my Cortlyn loves her too. In fact, it is one of the few full -length movies Cortlyn will watch from start to finish!

Oh my goodness, between your amazing costumes and breathtaking pics, I've sat here reading up to page 15 tonight. (Sure as heck was more fun than doing laundry!! :rotfl:)

I am just practically drooling over your firework and nighttime pics! And awesome dark ride pics! I upgraded from a P&S to a Rebel before our trip and had the best time playing around with it in Disney. Already bought one lens and shopping around for the next....poor DH had no idea that it wasn't as simple as "buy a new camera and be done with it" ;)

Your daughter just shines in every picture. I can't wait to show my DD all of "Princess Katie's" outfits tomorrow - she's going to flip, especially over her beloved favorite, Tiana. (That blue strapless is just to die for!!)

your fireworks and parade pictures are gorgeous!!

and what a great moment with the princesses! you deserved a little pixie dust after that run-around!

So I see you have the G10, I just got the G12... how do you likes yours for travel? Actually, I love, love love the G10, but like all the point and shoots, it just doesn't perform well in low light conditions. I really can push it above 200 iso even with noiseware. Pictures in good light are fabulous and very crisp. Focus is great and 99% of my pics are keepers. My only gripe is that even in manual with the 2.8 ap, there isn't much background blur. I am use to shooting manual with a 40D and sometimes a Mark II and I usually use my 24-70 L or a very fast prime (85 1.2 or 50 1.2). Obviously, there is no point and shoot that will even come close to this. I first bought the G10 because I can increase the shutter speed and I can capture my kids on fast moving rides without having to lug around a dslr. For this purpose, it works very well.

My struggle with Disney is that although I am dying to take some great pics, my girls are 5 and 7 and I want to be focused on them rather than taking pictures. They aren't terribly patient with me when I am trying to get a shot and they are ready to go, go, go.

I too am considering a smaller dslr, but I would still have an issue with higher iso. I am considering renting one for our trip. Honestly, the camera decision is more challenging than my ADRS! :)

No hijacking at all. I love costume talk! We're not really into the fairies here. We like Tink, and have watched the movies, they just don't grab either of us like some of the other Disney movies. I was going to make Katie a Tinkerbell costume for this trip, but honestly just ran out of time. I'm not as motivated to make those costumes either, because I don't think I can make a very close replica. I saw those Rosetta costumes when they were out. They are adorable! I think if Katie was into Rosetta, I'd hunt it down on Ebay.

As for the "baby is growing up too fast" story line..... I'm way ahead of you on that one!

Your pictures are amazing. The shots of the fireworks are great and I  the picture of Cinderella and Prince charming in the coach in front of the castle. That should be in an add for MVMCP.

I'm so glad you're reading along. And thank you for the kind comments on the photos.

I suppose I could come up with a photo or two for Katie's Disney resume! :rotfl2: I will also be sure she lists her "quick-change" skills on that resume. Most everything just gets changed out over top of pants or a skirt and a camisole, so it's pretty easy.

I love reading your TR and seeing all the dresses and outfits you made they are beautiful. My question to you is how many bags do you end up taking with you on your trip with all these beautiful dresses?

OK, so MAYBE we chose our airline based on luggage fees! :rotfl: We each brought 2 suitcases for this 9 day trip. Thankfully Southwest allows 2 checked bags per person free!

Okay... I'm a slacker, but I have finally caught up! YAY. I can't believe that we were there the same time but we had a completely different touring plan! :confused3

Katie and I both love Mary Poppins. Our favorite Disney movie is The Aristocats, but I think MP comes in a close second. She was sick on one of our long road trips to the west coast when she was 4. We bought the MP DVD and while she rested in bed, she watched that thing over and over.

Did Cortlyn get to meet Mary Poppins at Disney?

Thank you so much for the kind words! That blue Tiana might have been Katie's #1 pick for favorite costume of the trip. There's one more coming up that MIGHT be in the running for her favorite. I'll have to ask her after school which one wins.

So which Rebel do you have? And which lenses? I love photography talk almost as much as character talk! :lmao: Any time you have questions, post over on the photography board. My friend decided to buy a DSLR last week, so I posted a thread asking about various models, and they answered all her questions quickly, and offered links to the best deals. She went for the Sony A500 DSLR.

your fireworks and parade pictures are gorgeous!!

and what a great moment with the princesses! you deserved a little pixie dust after that run-around!

Thank you! It was so strange to feel like no one had a clue what was going on that night. But like I said, all was forgotten so quickly after our magical moment with the princesses. princess: I'm not exactly sure why, but I have always felt like it had something to do with the cold weather. They also canceled the show on the castle steps because of the cold. I found out here on the DIS after the fact that they gave tickets for the Thursday night party (12/16) to anyone who complained in Guest Relations. Since we already had tickets for the 12/16 party, you'll see why I wasn't a big fan of that plan........ Regardless, we certainly got more than our money's worth that night and would of course do it again in a heartbeat, cold weather and all! :goodvibes

I don't have one of the really big DSLR's, but my problem is that I keep wanting to bring this lens or that lens. And don't forget the tripod! :lmao: Once I get a fair number of things at Disney successfully captured as images, I hope to start bringing just one lens on my camera to each park each day. This is also easier if you take a break during the day to return to the room, where you can also select a different lens to bring back to the park for the evening. Of course, that's not generally our touring style, since we try to go during cooler weather, when park hours are shorter.

The other problem I have is that day to day life is just too hectic for me to get much time to "play" with my photography. Disney seems to be my only chance, so I like to have the tools along to do it properly.

The "joys" of photography :headache:
I will be taking my G12 on its first trip in little over a month and am excited to see the results, I hope i am happy. My main reason for getting it was I will be going on a 6 week trip to asia and honestly did not have room for an SLR and thought this would be my best bet, since just like the lady said you need this lens, that lens, oh yes and the tripod, and that charger, this charger... the list goes on and on, hence why my bag weighed 38 lbs when I wet to Africa...:faint: Here is what I carried aroudn for three weeks, by the end of that tiem I started leaving crap in the room, I brought WAY TOO much :rotfl:

I tell you what I look like a pack mule

LOL! :rotfl2:

But you know I TOTALLY get it!

I did better carrying my lenses around on this trip because it was so cold. On our trip in 09, we hit record heat and I was ditching stuff out right and left. I even called my husband (who was meeting us a couple days into the trip) to have him bring my nice small kit lens I had left behind. Many days on that trip I only carried the camera and kit lens. Carrying extra stuff just bothered me more in the heat.

I bet you'll do great with the G12. I'll anxiously be waiting for your trip report so I can see! :thumbsup2

YES! We met her, but you will have to watch my slow motion thread to find out the story! :rotfl2:

:rotfl2:

No problem. I can be patient. I subscribed, so I'll know when it happens! :rotfl: Mine's only progressed as far as it has because I had such a high need to escape from daily life for a bit!

This is our first trip (and probably our last -at least for awhile) to Disney so I feel that photographer's need to document EVERYTHING. I think you will really like the G12. I brought my G10 to Busch Gardens and it was awesome. Besides the DOF an iso challenges, I got gorgeous pics of my family on vacation at a fraction of the effort. I was really pleased and I am sure you will be too.
