Hi all - I'm new to this board. We will be taking my DD 15 to DW in 3 weeks. She is allergic to milk/lactose/and any artificial sugars - especially High Fructose Corn Syrup. Any idea where to begin to find things she can eat. I'm going to read through some of the threads - but wanted some info. Thanks.

In the Disabilities FAQ that is stickied to the top of this board there is information on food allergies including the email address of Brenda Bennet. You can email her with your allergies and she will get back to you about it - for counter service and cart info.

As for sit-down meals on the WDW property, you should make sure to note the allergies in your reservations. You will be given a # to call and talk to someone about each restaurant (some parks - the # is the same for all the places in that park). The chefs can accommodate you but will need advance notice for the best results.

Hi and :welcome: to disABILITIES!

If you click on where it says "disABILTIES" at the top of this page it will take you to the Index. One of the top items is the "disABILTIES FAQ" which will gives lots of useful information. Post #3 has lots of links and information by category; you would probably be best off in the diet section.

Or, if you want an easier route, click on the link in my signature.

When you talk to people, please try to be as accurate as possible, and also giving possible choices of what can be eaten. For example, you said "artificial sweeteners"; would this also include aspartane or Splenda?

Make sure that any meal reservation have a note about food allergies, and remind the person at the podium and even your server. Generally a chef will come out and discuss the needs with you, and show your daughter what would be safe. If the meal is a buffet usually the chef will point out what is or is not safe, and often will prepare a special meal that meets the needs.

At the quick service locations they have a book of ingredients of everything they serve; talking to a manager will get you special assistance.

My dd15 has a fructose and sorbitol allergy. I have been searching for information on safe eating places also. I did email WDW and ask. If you would like when I get a reply I will share it with you. I haven't had any luck yet. It is nice to hear someone else is allergic to high fructose corn syrup.

I have been fighting this a Disney for a while and honestly I mostly end up doing without. As an adult this is probably easier than as a child. I am diabetic which also complicates things. The only artificial sweetener I can tolerate is Splenda. No sugar alcohols, no nutrasweet. Also am lactose intolerent so no milk products except in really small amounts. And then there is shellfish and mango allergy. All that said I find most restaurants are very good at pointing out what I can have and working with me to get safe foods.

Remember, fructose is totally different than HFCS. :)

There's a buried thread on the Budget forum, of all places, for avoiding HFCS.

Biggest issue I can think of at Disney is to avoid Uncrustables. Those things are full of corn syrup and HFCS, both of which are huge triggers for my son. I finally read the package when he was halfway through one last December in DCA...he saw my face, put it down, and asked if it had HFCS. He was only 3.5 but he HATES the feeling that junk causes in him.

If the problem with your DD goes beyond just HFCS and goes into the corn syrup territory, watch out for Dole Whips. Actually, since DWs have sodium caseinate, you want to avoid them for dairy anyway (funny how they state they are dairy free but have casein, eh?), but other than that they have corn syrup solids, and that triggers my son too. BUT it's not everyone's issue.

I avoid all Nestle ice cream products, well that doesn't count for you b/c of the dairy, so never mind.

While home, I would probably check all the soy dream and rice dream products, to see what flavors are safe from the HFCS. Then request those flavors.

I keep getting confused while thinking of advice, b/c my son can't have anything with "corn syrup" in the name (so chocolate coatings on things are out, as the shininess of a chocolate coating is generally achieved with corn syrup), but those don't apply to you IF the problem is only in the HFCS and not corn syrup in general.

Basically if you keep your diet as whole as possible, you can avoid HFCS. The chefs aren't going to be spooning out glops of that and putting it into the food they make. Corn syrup on the other hand is harder to avoid! But if you're just with the HFCS that's easier. Don't go for the processed stuff.

If the chocolate covered bananas (assuming no dairy in the chocolate) are the same brand as at Disneyland, those are safe from a HFCS point of view.

I can't remember if it's corn syrup or HFCS to watch for, so I'll mention it...the one extremely hidden place for the junk is in VANILLA extract. Check labels for that. (at home, too)

Sodas at the parks of course are out*. But there are some natural sodas you can find without HFCS. Thomas Kemper just started with cane sugar sweetened root beers, but those are in bottles and I don't htink you can bring those into WDW (you can't at DLR). Blue Sky natural sodas are in cans, but you have to be careful. Some of their stuff has HFCS and some don't. YOu have to read labels every time.

Juices, well, we avoid juices at any restaurant. I don't like being annoying and making them check labels, so we just assume that they all have HFCS and DS has water. At home we buy organic juices to avoid HFCS.

Hope that helps; if I think of anything more I'll come back. :)

*I haven't been so I don't know, but the one "out" you might have is the place where they serve the sodas from different countries. Other countries aren't stuck on using HFCS, so it's possible the sodas I've read about from Japan, and the Beverly, and the others, MIGHT not be sweetened with HFCS, so you might be able to try those.

This is a list of fast food restaurant items with HFCS. HCFS can be hidden under other names though but this is a start.

a very very very long thread about people going HFCS-free. they have lots of products listed there. It is the one in the budget board, lol.

A good portion of bees are fed HFCS.
