DON'T BE A LEMMING! This past July 16 - 22 I thought I had planned the perfect trip. All of our restaurant reservations coincided with whichever park had the early and late extra magic hours. We were going to be able to take complete advantage of the time we were going to be at WDW. We planned to be up at dawn and stay out until the parks close down. It was going to be tuff, but how often do you go to Disney anyway. For us, once a year and we had already decided that this was going to be our last for a while.

What a mistake. 40,000 of our best friends staying on property had the same idea. I had a bad feeling when I heard a girl on our plane talking about the parks they were going to and it sounded exactly like the trip I planned to the tee. After the second night which was just like the first night, the parks were absolutely packed at mid-night, I realized what a mistake we had made. It was too late to make wholesale changes because all of our meal reservations were made months in advance.

For our entire trip, we followed everyone else at WDW from park to park, because they were doing exactly what we were. My best advice would be to NEVER do late admission at any of the parks. SKIP a park completely, even in the morning, if that park has late admission that particular day. Go to other parks that day. If your kids must stay out late, go back to the Hotel and swim. Do early admission. It's much better. Several years ago they had E-ride nights at the MK. They were great because they charged $10 a person extra, and that kept the riff raff out. It seemed like we had the whole magic kingdom to our selves. It was kind of erie though. Those were the days.

I totally agree with you about the E-Nights.......a whole different story than these late Extra Magic Hours......I miss E-night!!!

You've got to be kidding me! I've been to E-ride nights in the past, but I saw my share of "riff raff" on those nights. Keep in mind, EMH's are supposed to only be for resort guests. As a resort guest, I plan to utilize EMH to its best benefit for me, whether that means going to them or staying away from them. Of course, I'm going in October, so crowds won't be anything like what they are in the summer. But I guess I'll be part of the "riff raff" enjoying EMH on some nights. Just because the parks are crowded with people taking advantage of EMH evenings, does not make those people "riff raff". "Riff raff", if I take your meaning correctly, come in all shapes and sizes, AND from all socioeconomic backgrounds, so the extra $10 to get into MK on EMH evenings would have discouraged "riff raff" from entering the park no better than expensive Disney resort room costs discourage them now.

I understand your point, and planning to go TO EMH's is something we're going to do, and in some cases, we will go AWAY from EMH's. But the "riff raff" comment was a bit much, no offense.

You'd be surprised that the vast majority of people staying at Disney's Econo Lodges with 2 to 4 kids and watching every penny they spend, will not pay the extra $40 to $60 for 3 extra hours at a park. The parks aren't nearly as crowded as when the extra hours are free. I enjoyed not having a crowd at all during E-Ride nights. My only point. P.S. I'm sorry if I hit too close to home on the riff raff statement.

Grimley, did you have some sort of tragic childhood riff raff experience? It seems like a tender spot for you. :goodvibes

There were also a ltd number of E-Night Tickets so the park wouldnt get overcrowded-----o those WERE the days. I think I rode BTMRR 10 times with my brother and cousins without ever getting off....sigh nostalgia setting in

trip reports are for everyone a learning experience. Please be good to each other

Well said.

sportears~ Sorry you had such a rough time. For future trips (although I know you said this trip will be the last for a while) would it be possible for you to go during the off-season? That would probably be the biggest help for not being a "lemming" as you said.
Another great resource, besides the wonderful DISboards :), is the Unofficial Guide to WDW. You know, if you decide to try a trip to WDW a little sooner... :rolleyes1

I suspect the difference in emh and e nights is in the limited number of tickets that were sold (even to resort guests) under that program vs the emh system not the cost.

(just so you know the all stars can appeal to young children with their theming and many parents who could likely afford other places will stay their to please their children, also staying within your means and watching ones budget hardly qualifies as rif raf imho)

Sorry you didn't get as much done as you planned but hope you enjoyed your time with your family and your meals at least!

Dear debloco,
I am glad that people talk about their experiences going to WDW during crowded times like sportears tried. I wish that there was a sticky or thread about enjoying WDW during peak season since I can not risk my job status and therefore my Disney income LOL :) by going at any other time but during WDW's peak seasons. Going for my and my Dd's first time is getting scary with everyone stating that we shouldn't pick WDW if it has to be in peak season, but I really would like my daughter to experience WDW at least once in her childhood with us especially since I never got to do it! I see that you are going in peak season to WDW. Do you have any suggestions, so that I don't end up frustrated and feeling like a "lemming" as sportsears felt?

Sorry that you had an unpleasant experience with the crowds, sportears. Good friends of our were there at the same time as you, but they didn't wait in lines for longer than 20 minutes. Going against the crowds and utilizing fastpass made all the difference for them. Did you think of trying to rearrange your ADR's so your family could go against the flow?

Cococat..I've only had one experience during a peak travel time. DH and I were at the World last year from December 28th-January 2nd. Can't get any more crowded than that, according to all the info I've read. :teeth: We had PS's (as they were called at the time) for a few meals but mostly did counter service. We were there close to park opening times, utilized fast pass and EMH (only AM times at this point), and stayed as late as we wanted. We were so surprised that we were able to do everything we wanted...and then so. One day we waited 60 minutes for our first ride on Splash, but other than that the waits were quite doable. On the evening of 12/30 we stopped counting at 15 rides in a row of Splash & BTMRR as walk-ons. We can't wait until DS2 is a little older so we can bring him there to ring in the New Year. My biggest tip would be to be flexible and not expect to be able to do everything...you might just be surprised. Have fun! :)

Peak season at WDW beats low season anywhere else!
Have no fear--we've only ever gone to WDW during peak season--Christmas, Spring Break, and Summer. Can't even imagine going during "off" season! :confused3
Some advantages to Peak Season:
1) More interesting people-watching opportunities! :teeth:
2) Most, if not all attractions open.
3) Parks open longer
4) The family that endures peak season together stays together. (Or something like that).
5) More bonus miles on our VISA 'cause we're paying higher rack rates!

Seriously, we've always had great times at WDW, and the more we go, the better we plan and the easier our trips have been. When we were there this past June, we never waited more than 15 minutes for any attraction.
Peak season has its own challenges, but it can be done.

I agree, DisneyDottie. We went in early April this year, and it was festive and fun to have so many other people around, as long as you planned well and used those fastpasses to full advantage! The advantage of April was the ideal weather, of course. I think peak season in the hot summer months wouldn't be nearly as much fun! I also miss E-nights! Loved them, and by the way, I don't think the riff-raff comment was meant to be taken seriously! It's kind of a tongue-in-cheek expression! :flower:

We too miss e-nights. We were there a few weeks ago and at the MK the waits for rides were 40- 60 minutes at midnight.
