OK, heres the important stuff,Meclizine is the genaric for Bonine[8 tablets,$10.00].Meclizine
can be purchased over the counter,a bottle of 100 tablets cost $9.00 at Wal-greens.

If you have a child with motion sickness ask their docter how much to give it will give them the relief they need to enjoy riding!!!

Pharmacist answer to Motion Sickness Meds
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Sawyer!
As a pharmacist I recommend Bonine, a chewable form of meclizine. This is the same medicine they will offer you on the ship. It comes in packages of 8 (just right for the 7 day) and you take it about and hour or so before you board the ship. If your kids are around 50 lbs they can take 1/2 tab (though the drug lit. says over 12) For your youngsters you can take along some liquid childrens Dramamine. Dramamine does tend to make you more drowsy. And it's true most young kids are not bothered by rough seas. I guess its due to thoes 9 months of "womb waves" they experienced. I would suggest that you ask your pediatrician if you can have a script for a couple of phenergan suppositories to take with you. This is mainly for nausea/vomiting rather than a motion sickness cure, but it would help if that situation arrises.

Do steer clear of the patches. Scopolamine is good at preventing motion sickness, but has a multitude of undesirable side effects. If your not carefull in washing your hand after application behind your ear and touch your eye it will dialate like it does at the eye doctors office. It can also give you a "bug eyed" feeling and cause dry mouth, dizziness and hallucinations.

Ginger has been studied as an anti-nausant prior to surgery but there is no formal info on prevention of motion sickness. It also has to be taken 4 times a day to be effective.

The sea-bands (bands that have a pressure point at your wrist) seem to work for some.

For what ever med you try, be sure to try it "on dry land" to make sure you don't experience any side effects or drug interactions. You can ask your local pharmacist about these too. Or you can E-mail me and I will try to help.

Have a bubbly fun time on your cruise!

I have an inner ear disorder, and meclizine does the trick for me also. I do have a little problem with it making me sleepy, so I take it at night right before bed, that solves that. This is a big help and let's me enjoy all the rides. I have given this hint to friends, and it worked for them also!

I took Bonine for that new Space ride and it didn't work:(. I hope it works for other people:tongue:

Minybear - Did you take the Bonine the night before you rode the Space ride?? It needs time to work.

I think I took the medication that morning prior to riding the ride. I know that Bonine doesn't work for me regarding the rides. I have taken it 2x's and both times have gotten sick. I guess I need to try taking it the evening before, but I have gotten sick to much on these rides that I am afraid to gamble again:(.

mmks i have an innerear disorder too and meclizine doesnt do a thing for me!!! i have to go to the good ole xanax!!! ...thankfully it doesnt knock me out like some...

cyndibelle
Good idea. I will try that. I really don't want that "knocked out" feeling. Can I take this product the day of or the night prior?

Looks like we will be at WDW the same time:).

hey there minybear...xanax is a prescription drug and only used for a few things...panic attack...inner ear disorders..etc....the effects of xanax only lasts for about 4 hours or so..it takes usually about 20 minutes to kick in....so this isnt something you can just go and buy at the store and dont go asking your doc for some just so you can ride rides cause i guarantee they will laugh at cha.......yea we are gonna be there at the same time....we are soo excited we cant wait!!...have you pulled your suitcases out yet??

cyndibelle

I didn't know that xanax is a prescription drug! I guess I was daydreaming. Oh well!!

Suitcases not out yet (cats will scratch them) but counting down the days. 4 weeks today we will be at WDW. Yahoo. Our stay is coming up. Next thing I will know our vacation will be over and time to go home :(.

Hi!

I also get SEVERE motion sickness - after flying it literally takes days for me to feel normal. Dramamine does absolutely nothing. I've never tried the meclizine, so I guess it's worth a try.

My son has also started suffering from pretty bad motion sickness. I tried dramamine with him & though it helped the motion sickness, he broke out in hives (we tried it twice & it was definitely the dramamine). Does meclizine have the same ingredients? I would love to find something to help him. He has learned what he needs to do to be O.K. in the car. But he would really love to ride things like Star Tours and watch IMAX films, which make him really sick. If anyone knows the answer, please share. Thanks for this informative thread!

Jessica

I'll test this out when we leave in a few days. I used to get somewhat motion sick on Star Tours and Space Mountain, and chose not to ride things that spin because I figured they would be worse. I'm determined to try Mission Space, though, and I'll definitely know if Bonine works if I make it through Star Tours without looking at the floor. :D

Just wanted to say that meclizine is not only in Bonine, but also is Dramine Less Drowsy Formula. I am not saying it works for everyone, but helps me. You have to be careful, you should not take antihistimines with it unless you have talked to your Dr.
