Doncha just hate it when you have to do the right thing?--UPDATE pg 5 #63

I'd be interested in knowing how the other kids in the class did as well. When DS was in 7th grade he qualified to take pre-algebra. Well the principal hired a rookie teacher who was totally lost. Then the next year he took Algebra. Most of the class did very bad since she again hired a rookie teacher. Middle of the year she ended up hiring, get this, another rookie teacher to help out. So when DS got to high school and took Albegra II he did really bad. He passed but barely. Then in college he failed Algebra. Retook the class but dropped it.

So far I don't have any names of the other students who seem to have failed. We'll see. They've only been back in school for 2 days and we're expecting 1" of snow tomorrow so all their brains have flown out the window.

I haven't read every single response, but did notice that she got 65. 65 in my neck of the woods is passing with a D. I barely passed Algebra in high school & got a 65 on the exam. I just didn't get it. My teacher just didn't explain it well.

Thank goodness my parents didn't punish me for it because dancing was also my life. If it were taken away from me in high school I would not own my dance studio today, my daughters & I would not have that "dance bond" that we have, I would not have the opportunity to touch the many lives that I do, among many other things that dance has done for me.

Please rethink taking this away from her. Do I wish I had done better in Algebra some days & been able to understand it better? Sure, but it has never hindered my career choice. I've become a successful small business owner because of my love of dance.

I knew I should have continued reading the posts! I just read your update. Good for you. I think you did the right thing!

I wish 65 was a passing grade. When I was in school I "passed" geometry with a 65. Of course, my teacher--one of the football coaches--made a deal with me at the beginning of school. He said he knew I was pretty dumb at math, but if i'd just sit there and shut up and behave myself he's see that i passed the course. If my dad had known that he would have turned that man inside out. I know nothing about geometry, but I learned a lot about football that year.

 That's okay. I hate when I do that. You'll love this--a few months ago my DD turned to me and said, "You know mom? If this getting-famous thing doesn't work out I think I'd like to own a studio and hire people to teach the stuff I'm not as good at. And I want to teach musical theater and Shakespearean theater." :thumbsup2 She's got a good head on her shoulders.

Tell her it's a great option. It's a lot of work, but it really is rewarding.

And tell her having instructors that can teach what you're not so strong at is also the best thing to do. It gives you a studio that can offer a lot & have strong instructors in all genres. Plus, it helps the dancers because they get a taste of many different styles.

Wish her luck from someone who has made dance their life!!!

UPDATE--:goodvibes I think DH and I have come to a consensus. We have decided NOT to punish DD16 for failing algebra 2,...

And the piece d'resistance--DD will be allowed to attend a sleepover once a month only. She has 4 BFFs and they spend a lot of time together; it isn't unusual for them to sleep over at one of their homes on Friday or Saturday nights. I think this will be stimulus enough to keep her on track and a much better choice than removing her from dance. She also has a new boyfriend. We'll probably limit them to one date/week this semester. I think thats plenty, since they see each other every day in school.

DD is on-board with this program. She was relieved that we didn't take away her dance, show choir, and spring musical performances :dance3: (we had not even mentioned it, but she had already imagined the worst. )

Ah yes, the parental power of their kid imagining the worst :thumbsup2...wise are you, Obi-Mom :yoda:. The social carrot good it is, too ::yes::

agnes!
