Two articles, the first from WFTV9:

ORLANDO, Fla. -- A tragic ending to a SeaWorld stunt intended to captivate its spectators left one dolphin dead after two dolphins collided in a mid-air trick. Park officials are taking another look at their training practices.

SeaWorld officials say nothing like this has ever happened before and they're doing whatever it takes to make sure it doesn't happen again.

SeaWorld's Discovery Cove offers a more intimate setting for people to interact with animals. So SeaWorld says there were only a few people around when the tragedy happened. The accident happened during a show at Discovery Cove where visitors get an up-close and personal experience with the dolphins.

But during an aerial stunt Saturday afternoon, Sea World officials say a dolphin named Sharky collided with another dolphin and died.

"It's just a freak accident," said Sean Gilligan, a park visitor.

A SeaWorld spokeswoman said it's unusual for two dolphins to crash in mid-air. Visitors who didn't see the accident say after watching dolphin shows at the park, they're surprised it happened.

"Everything was controlled," said Keith Killebrew, another park visitor. "Very cool."

Sharky was a 30-year-old female dolphin. A web site that tracks captive dolphins says Sharky was captured in 1982 and is an atlantic bottle-nose dolphin.

SeaWorld said it is taking the incident seriously and is looking into training protocols to make sure it doesn't happen again.

The other dolphin in the collision is expected to be okay. After the investigation that will happen at SeaWorld, Sharky's remains will be used for science and research and will be disposed of properly as required by federal guidelines.

(CNN) -- A 30-year-old dolphin at Sea World has died after colliding with another dolphin while performing aerial tricks, the Orlando, Florida, amusement park said Monday.

The incident occurred about 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Discovery Cove area of the park, according to a statement by Sea World spokeswoman Becca Bides.

The animals were in the center of the lagoon and not near guests, she said.

The dolphin who died was named Sharky. The other dolphin, Tyler, is being watched by veterinarians but appears to be fine, Bides said.

"This is an unfortunate, random incident," Bides said in a written statement.

"While it is not unusual to have two animals performing aerial behaviors at the same time, we are reviewing the situation to ensure even such a random incident does not occur again."

I saw the dolphin show at Sea World on Sunday. My mom said it was different than other times. At one point, they even had a trainer with a training tool of some sort standing outside the tank and he tapped the water with it before one of the tricks. So it does look like they are taking extra measures to make sure something like this doesn't happen at any of their shows again.

This is so sad! I love to see the animals, but I am all for less tricks to keep them safe!!

Sad to hear about this. It's a real shame.

Unfortunately, accidents do happen. It's unavoidable. There have been reports--infrequent as they may be--from other facilities in the history of keeping dolphins in aquarium settings of similar occurrences, though. I remember hearing mention of two psuedorcas in Hawaii running head-on into eachother mid-air while being trained to do a tandem jump years back. They were okay, though.

Just like it's not unheard of for horses to collide during a competition or dogs to run into eachother at play (heck, mine has on more than one occasion slid across the kitchen floor in his excitement and thumped himself hard into the wall before! Silly puppy.)... these things do happen. It's terrible that this accident has happened, but I know Sea World takes utmost precautions to prevent these sort of accidents.

I doubt we'll get the full details, as Sea World is understandably close-lipped about these sort of incidents, but I'd be willing to bet that there was no negligence involved and it simply boils down to an accident.

That is so sad. I find it hard to believe it happened. I was there in March of 2007. It's very controlled. So Sad.

:sad1: That is really sad. Dolphins are so beautiful. When we went in 2004, Capricorn was our dolphin. If it had been him, I seriously would have cried.

I heard about this while I was on vacation in Dubai. I have interacted with both dolphins in the past and I was very sad when I heard the news. Still, it makes me angry that all and sundry suddenly claim that Seaworld/ Discovery Cove abuses their animals. It was a freak accident, nothing more and nothing less. Accidents can happen. I have seen this behaviour many times before both as part of the dolphin swim and completely spontaneous when the dolphins were just playing. This has been done hundreds of times before with no harm done. Of course it is tragic that it happened the once, but to jump to the conclusion that the park should be shut down because of this is just ridiculous.

Unfortunately, Sea World's opposition is going to use ANY accident as a rally point to grab their placards and start shrieking about captivity and abuse.

It was simply an accident, these things happen. It's sad, but part of life.

I'm sure the anti-captivity fanatics will fade back into obscurity when this incident has been forgotten again.

A friend one time told me, "What do dolphins do out in the wild anyway? They swim and make little dolphins and that's pretty much it."

I was there when it happend 4/26. My dolphin is the one that passed away, her name was Natasha (also known as sharky) i posted about the experience in another post but overall i do think they need to rethink the training, of course accidents do happen but there shouldve been better communication about who is going to do which trick at which time, we signaled at the same time and thats what happend. it was so sad =( kind of made the whole experience scary!

That's pretty much all that ANY animals do in the wild. ;)

Most of the behaviors you see in dolphin shows are slight modifications on behaviors in the wild, too. Wanna see some awesome wild dolphin aerial acrobatics? Check out footage of spinner dolphins like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9teNVevwKzU
