Dole Whip - why so special?

THANK YOU!!!! I'm not the only one! I thought I was missing some Dole Whip gene or something! It's just like soft serve ice cream--except without the ice cream. I suppose for someone who can't eat dairy, it might be a great treat. But I see these comments that basically say if I don't get my family a Dole Whip, we've deprived them of Heaven on Earth, our trip will be ruined, and there's something psychologically wrong with me!

Doesn't help that there's a seasonal ice cream stand a mile down the road from me that carries it. They carry vanilla, but will mix in any of 24 different flavors for you (same ones they use for the soft serve). Again, great for someone who can't have dairy, but the rest of us prefer actual ice cream. So when I first saw the hubbub about Dole Whip, I was like, "Huh? Really? Is this the same stuff?" It is and I still don't get it!

It has a milk derivative so it's not good for people with a milk allergy--ds was allergic to milk last time we went so none of us tried a dole whip. Maybe it works if you are lactose intolerant? But definitely not for a milk allergy.

I had the Dole Whip with the Coconut Rum at EPCOT for F&G Festival in March and it was YUMMY!!

I suppose I'd get a rum-free one if I was super hot and passing by at the time. But I'm not going out of my way to go get one.

No one in my family has allergies, so I never paid close attention. But I do hear it advertised as "non-dairy Dole Whip" so I just assumed. Live and learn.

OK, so I gotta ask. I keep hearing about this famous Dole Whip. Now, I like ice cream like most people, but with all the yummy snacks that I've read about, what is so special about this? It just looks like pineapple flavoured ice cream.
(Maybe because I'm a chocolate lover, that other stuff seems better from pictures)

I am a chocolate lover myself, but I really enjoy a Dole Pineapple Whip Float. This past trip, I tried it with a pineapple/vanilla swirl. It was even better and I am not a fan of straight vanilla flavored anything. The vanilla helps to cut down the sweetness of the pineapple.

I LOVE the Dole Whips. I love soft serve, I love pineapple flavored anything, and it's the only place I can find the two combined. However, I have been eating Dole Whips long before I discovered the boards and that they have somewhat of a cult following. I think the more something is hyped up, the more potential there is to be let down. Had I not already fallen in love with it before hearing all the rave reviews, I might have been disappointed as well.

Some people love the turkey legs, some people love the churros... for me, it's the Dole Whip. To each their own!

I love the float! My husband did not enjoy it. I think the pineapple juice and ice cream really cooled me down in the hot September weather. Can't wait to go get one again. I am also a big fan of the 48 cent ice cream cone at McDonald's and the $4 scope of chocolate ice cream at Greater's. I'm not sure I've ever meet an ice cream cone I didn't like.

I like the Dole Whip float. I like the pineapple flavored soft serve with the pineapple juice. I can't get anything like that here in East TN.

As far as the chemicals in it, it doesn't look any worse than any other processed food. I doubt the ice cream that is sold is just milk, eggs, cane sugar, and natural flavoring. I would say almost all the treats sold at WDW has a long list of chemical stabilizers and preservatives, and questionable sweeteners like high fructose corn syrup and dextrose.

This. If anyone cites the ingredient list as a reason to avoid it, I'd LOVE to know what their grocery list looks like.

So true. Not expecting health with any snacks. Just that it puts it in your face...Guess for vacation its' better not to know or think about it and just enjoy ;)

Overly sweet with the #2 ingredient being sugar with a unique pineapple flavor. We buy one for the kids and let them try it...they didn't finish it. I took a bite and quickly validated again why I do not get them. Others love it, but for me there are better offerings on property. Overall, it taste just like its list of ingredients DOLE WHIP INGREDIENTS: Water*, Sugar, Dextrose, Pineapple Juice Concentrate, Coconut Oil**, Stabilizers (Cellulose, Xanthan Gum, Locust Bean, Karaya Gum, Pectin), Silicon Dioxide (Anticaking), Corn Syrup Solids, Citric Acid, Sodium Caseinate (A Milk Derivative), Artificial Flavor, Potassium & Sodium Phosphate, Mono & Diglycerides, Artificial Color (Yellow 5 & 6), Soy Lecithin.

This ingredient list is inaccurate. The sodium caseinate has been removed, making it dairy free.

There is no dairy in Dole Whips. The ingredients changed and the sodium caseinate was removed. I have 10+ allergies, including dairy, and am able to eat them with no problems.

I really like the pineapple soft serve (I think the orange tastes a little like baby aspirin!). They often have the pineapple flavor at my local frozen yogurt shop, and if the Dole Whip is one of the featured flavors, I'll get that instead of fro-yo. I like fruit flavored things!

The ice cream in my freezer right now has cream, milk, sugar, egg yolks, natural vanilla flavor, carob bean gum, and guar gum. We are waaaay not perfect but my grocery list tends to be things like eggs, butter, milk, bread, fruits, vegetables, etc. I do buy chips and such, but I try for the "healthier" versions and I cook a fair bit from scratch--really simple meals. We make Popsicles from fruit juice to avoid the high fructose corn syrup. And so on. We would not avoid dole whip or the like on vacation, but I would not be okay with those ingredients on a regular basis.

I, too, have a dairy allergy and have had the pineapple and orange Dole Whips. It's awesome for me because it's one of a few desserts that I can have! :)

I love a swirled pineapple/vanilla dole whip more than most anything. Not know why. Don't really care. I hit Aloha Isle at least twice every time I'm in the MK. Other folks can feel free to bust on it. To me it's one of the most perfect frozen snacks on earth.

Sorry if this is has already been mentioned, but I think part of the appeal is that MK (and Poly soon) and the Dole Plantation in Hawaii are the only two places in the country you can get a true "Dole Whip". I think the exclusivity of it makes it more popular as well. Plus it's refreshing! But we prefer the Dole Whip Float.

While not wide spread, I do think you can get Dole Whip outside of Mk/Poly and the Dole Plantation. Disneyland has it and I've seen it at my local yogurt shop. I don't think they can call it "Pineapple Dole Whip" if it's not Dole Whip.

We have pineapple dole whip and orange dole whip at our local mall, so it can be found outside of Disney world. Now, the citrus swirl, which is my favorite...that's a different story.
