*Doing the Donald in 2010* Jan. Half Marathon Support Thread!

 I have received today my letter from Disney Magic Express. And there is only 35 days left before my dream comes true. :dance3:
Anyway, today was a day of rest and it was sunny. Tomorrow I have a 6k to run and it will be rainy and windy. That's life.

Have a nice evening
Diane

I got my Magical Express stuff today too:cool1: That means we don't have to wait much longer:woohoo:

I was supposed to run this morning but it was raining so hard that I stayed in bed till 8:30 am. It is not the time to catch a cold, 6 weeks before Donald.
My new Asics were in Philadelphia at noon today and I hope that they will be in Derby Line, Vt tomorrow.
I told people at the office how much I saved by buying them in the States instead of Canada and their answer was: because they are coming from California to Derby in 2 days their soles will be very used so that's why you save so much. I work with funny people.
So tomorrow, I will be back on the road for a short run before my long run on Saturday.

Diane

Hello everyone, the holiday and extra work hours sure did get me off schedule but with only six weeks left it is definitely NOT time to give up but just get back with the program:cheer2:. I missed my long run last week but am scheduled for 8miles this weekend. Even though I know it will be hard I am anxious to see how I do so I will have an idea for the actual 1/2 marathon. Thanks for the suggestions of fuel for the long runs. We are thinking of doing a 4mile path twice and then we can have our water and fuel at the half way mark. We are supposed to have snow tomorrow and then Saturday will be in the 30s. That is cold for us, but again if I can run in the 30s then Orlando weather should be okay. This site sure does help to motivate me and see that we are all working towards the same goal. The training will also keep the weight off for the holidays. (I hope:)). Take care everyone.:santa:

Hi. You will do great in FL if you can run in the 30s. Good luck!:thumbsup2

Sorry you couldn't get out today Diane. Good luck tomorrow and Saturday!

OW! ow! Ow! I had five miles this morning. It was really cold - low 20s and windchill in the low teens. I was warm enough on top, but my legs never warmed up. The muscles never felt good and by the end every part of my leg was tightening up. Now the left one feels achy from ankle to hip. No sharp, local pains, but I don't want to do that again.

I, too, have 8 miles Saturday. I'll add another layer and hope it's just some muscle soreness.

Tracy, I'm guessing I'm no where near you. I'm 52xxx (sorry, closed the window. I'll print it at work tomorrw.)

How are you guys finding your bib numbers?

TGIF! Oh my gosh did this week fly by for me. I expect the next 5 will as well with the holiday season in full swing and lots going on! I cannot believe that 5 weeks from tomorrow is race day.

This week I did 5 miles on Tuesday and a short 2.6 yesterday. I'll head out there today with my 3 yr old and the jogger, and then Sunday I'll do another shorter run. My next long run (10 miles) will be on Tuesday.

Thanks Joanne, Lynn, Diane and Corinna for your fuel during the race info...it helps to know what others do. I'll be trying SOMETHING out during my run on Tuesday, not sure what yet!

queen mimi/Meg~ I'm so sorry you got the flu!! :( How are you feeling??

Arelys~ Keep training and you will get faster. You can do it!

Diane~ LOL to what your coworkers said about your shoes. :)

Ronda~ Hang in there with the cold. Maybe this a dumb question, but do you stretch before your runs? I didn't use to but then I started and it makes all the difference. Of course I haven't run in temps as cold as you have. lol

YAY for all the Magical Express stuff being received!

And YAY for the bib numbers being out!! I posted on that other thread asking questions about mine, it is 51678 so it seems I'm at the back of the pack starting out. I'll post on your thread too Tracy!

GOOD LUCK with all the long runs this weekend!! :cool1:

No, I warm up with a 5-10 minute walk, but stretch after I'm done. I'm going shopping tonight.

Hi Everyone,
I'm back. Sorry I've been MIA for so long. I didn't do too well with Thanksgiving. I only ran 3 miles the whole week!:scared1: Then on Sunday I tried to jump back into it with 8 miles. Ummmm.... that didn't go very well. I was trying to run longer than I ever had before after taking a week off and eating a lot. :sad2: I made it 7 miles. Not bad. I even did the first 2 miles at my race pace of 12 minutes/mile.

This week has been OK. I did those 7 on Sunday, 3 miles on Tuesday, and 4 miles yesterday. Tonight I'll be doing 5 miles.

This coming Sunday will be 10 miles! My first double-digit run. :woohoo: I'm pretty nervous. I mapped out a path around my house that is 5 miles long. I'm going to do it twice and stop for water half way through. Wish me luck!!!

I'm still really slow and struggling with fuel. I'm going to go back and read the posts here about food. I've tried the Cliff Bar Bloks and quite like them. I also drink a Cherry Pharm after each run and that seems to really help. Yesterday I didn't eat well (chocolate croissant 4 hours earlier, no water) before my run or have anything afterwards. About half an hour later I was feeling REALLY faint and sick. I had a pretzel and that helped tremendously. Can anyone tell me what makes me feel sick after running? It does seem to be related to eating. I'm interested in learning how this all works.

Anyway, have a great weekend everyone! I have 13 days left of being a student and then I'll be DONE with my Masters!!!! These next two weeks will be super busy with papers, exams and presentations. Got to stay healthy!!!!

Maybe I'll get our Magical Express stuff soon.

I'm bib number 46446

Are you doing a run/walk combo?
I know this next response will seem cliche but really the only way to go faster is to go faster. It's like we all have individual comfort levels and we will push them some but until we really push them, we will revert back to our comfortable pace. I recommend speed intervals on a treadmill or road even. I just like the treadmill for simplicity.

Start off with a warm up walk or job and then do 60 seconds at a fast pace (fast for you). Then walk/cool down for 2-3 mins and then do another 60 seconds, etc
Those 60 seconds are meant to get you and your body used to a faster pace or a new comfortable (yet faster) pace. If you can't do 60 seconds, do 30 seconds and speed up from there. You can do this one day a week over the next 5 weeks....

Those 60 seconds are not meant to be easy or fun

Yes, I'm doing a run/walk combo. I try to speed up currently & really push myself, but I don't feel like I'm getting any faster. I could be completely off on that though. I'll start adding in some more speed work starting on tomorrow's run. Thanks!

Yeah, to run fast you have to train fast. It had a duh quality when someone said it to me in April, but...

I really started to speed up after making my Tuesday runs a run3/walk1 interval. The 3s are awful and the 1 not nearly long enough. My heart really gets a workout, too. But it has worked. I've gotten faster and my LSD runs are much easier.

Good luck,
Ronda

After I posted my question I felt like such a dummy because duh, I just gotta go faster to get faster.

Hey Arelys!! How are you girl? You will get faster with the advice the girls gave you. Good luck!

I'm good, how are you? I forgot to say congrats on the half you did the other day! You are going to rock the half at Disney. :thumbsup2

Gosh, that sounds awful. The coldest weather I have ever run in was about 40-ish degrees, so I can't even imagine running in the 20s with windchill. We might be getting snow  tonight, so I might find out tomorrow what it's like to run in snow (and also what it's like to actually drive in the stuff and wear more then 2 layers of clothing.) I hope adding some layers help you out!

You are not eating or dirnking enough either before, during and after.

Before your run, try something like: banana, pb&j, protein bar and some chocolate milk.

Carry water with you to take with your blocks / gels.

When you finish chololate milk, coke, any food that you want really.

It sounds like you are making you body keytonic. Drink before you get thirsty, eat before you get hungrey.

I did 5 miles last night after work. I was in the gym. Most of the time I have been doing my workouts outside so being inside in the warm air was a bit of a shock for me. I wanted to stop after 1 mile and after 3 miles I started craving pretzels (Since with my training we have water stops and we usually have pretzels at them). I forced myself to finish though.

Saturday is a 12 mile run for me! I can't wait for it. It will be the longest I've done since the PDR. The weather is supposed to be horrible though. High of 39 with 80% chance of precipitation throughout the day. Ugh! I will need to bundle up this time! I will also need to take a parka with me this time. Hope everyone has a good weekend!

Don't you hate running on the treadmill? UGH! Does your gym get super hot too? I can't stand it. I have to run tonight and it's going to be in the gym, boo! This Sunday I will be able to run outside. Supposed to be in the 40s, so I will be bundling up as well. Looking forward to it though.

Good luck with your 12 miles! I know you will do great! Hope the rain holds up for you.:thumbsup2

Megan Good luck with your 12 miler tomorrow. You are a tough cookie to run in that weather!:worship:

As for me bad weather is forecast for tomorrow here in MD as well. So my nice DH came home from work early so I could do my long run today.:lovestruc Anyway I just finished 10 miles in 1:57:10. Not too shabby. My feet are hurting a bit though. I think I need new shoes. Not something I wanted to get right before Christmas, but I guess I'll have to shell out the bucks. Definitely don't want to mess my feet up right before the race.

Good luck to everyone this weekend. Can't wait to hear about your training:cheer2:
