*Doing the Donald in 2010* Jan. Half Marathon Support Thread!

I had a bad 5 miles. mentally bad.

I dont run, I'm at 17 - 18 min miles. 8 weeks to go. I move forward, I dont feel its "running" and I KNOW everyone can walk faster than I move...

I use two ratios. 3r/1w which is my "speed work". I run the 3 faster than I can maintain. HR really zooms up. The other one is 10r/3w. This one is basically run the first 10 minutes of each mile and walk out the end of the mile. It's becoming more like 10r/2.3w. I take the walk breaks to get my HR back down and get some good drinks from my water bottle, mop sweat. Lots of housekeeping stuff in those walk minutes!

OK I am up to 15k or running 10:1. This is my longest run in the last 2 years. The worst was the first 10 minutes :rotfl:. I don't know why but everything was hurting. Maybe it was the fact that it was 26F when I start and it was foggy. But after that it went as well as expected for someone doing her long run.
And I saw 2 female deers: they were quite jumpy since it is hunting season up here. I sure hope that it will not snow before I finish doing my long runs in December because I really like running in this trail.
Tomorrow is a day of rest.

Have a nice evening.

Awesome job - I remember how I felt (both great and bad) after my 1st double digit run.. I have 10 on my schedule for this Sunday - also hoping to hit a trail if it hasn't been washed out with all of our recent rain

Awesome job Diane! I hope the snow stays away for you (and me too!) I have an 8 miler scheduled for Saturday. I'm just hoping the rain quits before then.:wizard: Hope everyone else is doing well.

Ronda: Sounds like a great plan. I might give that ratio a try.

FL: great job on your 10 miler!!!

Boo. I don't know what's up with me lately. I had a bad 3 miles on Tuesday, couldn't run the whole way even at a slow pace. Today was even worse. I was supposed to do 4 miles, but couldn't do more than 2. :confused3 My calves and the back of my ankles hurt and felt tight. I had to keep getting off the treadmill to stretch, which hurt some more and made my feet tingle. It was weird and uncomfortable! Ugh!! I have such self-loathing when I can't meet my goals. I know I need to lighten up. I'm just worried that I won't be able to finish the race. I was sick last week and I'm sleeping/tired all the time, so I bet that has something to do with it. I think I might be just exhausted from work and school. Can't wait for all this to be over.

OK. Pity party over. Sorry for the vent.

Oh Sandy! I'm with you, girl!!!! I hate running and I hate myself for hating it. It's a nasty thing. There are days (seems like everyday the way I'm feeling right now) where I wish I had never started running and signed up for the race. I can't give up and I won't give up..... I guess I'll just be miserable until January. I'm doing the race with my sister and she wants to run the whole thing!:scared1: She's thin and athletic (yoga and all that). I don't think she understands that it's harder for me to run with this extra 60 pounds.

Anyway, lets do this together. We can be miserable one step at a time and maybe it won't be so bad.

Hugs and encouragement!

Sandy: I commented about this on your pre-TR. Hang in there!

liznboys: Sorry about the cold. Those are never fun. Where you feeling up to a run today?

french lady: Congrats on your run and your new longest distance!

Maple Girl: Hang in there! Be proud that you had the courage to sign-up for one of these things and the determination to see it through. It will be a great reward for all of the pain, tiredness and suffering you had to endure once you cross that finish line. As I told Sandy in her pre-TR: if half and full marathons were so easy, everyone would be doing them!

Joanne: Fingers crossed that your trail isn't washed out.

dismagiclover: Good luck with your 8 miles. I'm certain that you'll do fine.

I got in 4 miles tonight and did 6 miles last night. I have 14 miles scheduled for this Saturday. I'm a bit worried about it. In mile 12 of my 13 mile run last Saturday a calf muscle tightened up. I hope that wasn't foreshadowing problems that I will incur in upper milage. Tomorrow is a "rest" day from running so I'm going to get in some pilate work. I'm also going to start doing yoga on Saturday nights after my long runs to ensure that I've stretched out those muscles well.

Ugh, why is the first run after a race always so hard? I was supposed to do 45 minutes last night and an easy walk tonight. I ran for all of 5 minutes and walked for 15 minutes. Needless to say, I'm going to attempt that 45 minutes again tonight. My LR isn't until Sunday, thank goodness.

I am laughing at all the "I hate running" comments because it is so true for me too! I hate, hate, hate the training. But, I love, love, love the actual races. Obviously, since I am doing so many this year. I seriously do the absolute minimum amount of training that will allow me to cross the finish line in an upright position with a smile on my face.

Hi DisLvr: Maybe we should start a club.... The Running Haters Running Club

Hi Dolce: Great idea about the yoga. I should really do that. I think the reason yesterday was so rough was because I didn't stretch enough.

Well, it's a new day and a new run. My afternoon class has been canceled (yay!) so I can run outside before it gets dark instead of going to the gym. I used google maps to get a 4 miles route. I'm going to try to run slowly the whole way. If I need to walk, so be it. Wish me luck!

Me again. I forgot to mention that I had my first Donald related nightmare. This one involved missing flights and being stuck in airports. Now I feel like training has really started! :rotfl:

Did a three mile walk yesterday over hilly terrain (that's what we have in Southwestern Ohio!). Had a 14:55 pace. I feel pretty good about that. The longest distance I have had so far has been 8 miles. We are going to flat(!!) South Carolina for a week. I hope to get up to 9 miles with a good pace. I do have a question. DD and I are doing the half marathon together, then she is doing the full marathon the next day (she is definitely Goofy!). My question is about the Princess. We are looking at doing the princess in March. We did it last year and it was great. Do you think that we will be able to recover and resume a training program to ready for another half marathon that soon? Thanks.

Meg

I think you should be fine. Last year I did two half marathons two weeks apart and I managed. This should be better because you will be able to reverse taper and still have a few weeks to get some longer runs/walks in.

Take my advice with a grain of salt. I'm doing two half marathons back to back in May, so obviously I'm a little crazy. Not as crazy as Jeanne who did a marathon the week after NYC, but still a little crazy!

Thanks for the thoughts on the matter. It would be nice not to have to start all my training completely over, maybe just pick up my schedule somewhere in the middle. Now am waiting for DD to make the final decision.

Thanks again.

Meg

Exactly. I ran a half last weekend and this weekend I will start at around week 7 of my 14 week plan to prepare for Donald. This gives me time to hopefully improve my time without losing too much endurance.

Hey everyone!

I hope everyone can get out for training this weekend. I did 8 miles in a few seconds over 90 minutes:goodvibes I guess last week wasn't just a fluke! I hope I can keep it up for another 8 weeks.

OK. Now I want to hear everyone elses reports:cheer2:

It is amazing! I woke up this morning, it was pouring outside and DH and I were all snuggly in bed..... and I wanted to run! We got up and headed outside in our rain gear (DH rides his bike along with me  ). I was actually happy to be doing today's 5 miles. About a mile and a half in, I realized that today was a rest day and tomorrow is the 5 mile day!!! I continued along my path and ended up doing 3 miles today just for the heck of it. I'm so psyched that I actually wanted to run and did it even though I didn't "have to." Amazing!!:yay::yay::yay:

Hey all, I'm going back to the end of last week to catch up on replies.......

stenogoddess/Lauren~ HHI was gorgeous. It was amazing how many trees were everywhere and how all the buildings blend in. It was not the typical touristy beach town at all, and we LOVED it!
I hope you're feeling better! After being sick this past week and missing training, I understand how you feel. I am back at it now and it feels so good!

mla1977/Megan~ Welcome (again)! :) I think that was a brave and smart thing to do, to switch to the half. I'm sure you'll do great and you'll get to that full in time!
Keep doing those weekday workouts, good luck!

french lady/Diane~ Yay for new shoes! I am on my first ever pair of running shoes still. lol (It's only been since Feb this year, afterall). But it'll be a milestone for me when I finally need a new pair!
I won't be doing the 5K that Friday. I'll be resting it up that day (and Thursday.)
Great job on your long runs! That's neat you saw the deer.

Andrea31/Andrea~ Welcome (again!) :) It's great having another newbie here! Are you using any training plan?

bunnyfoo/Vicky~ I am so new to all of this still, but it seems like my min per mile increases quite a lot as the distance I go increases. I can do 30 min 5K's but I could not do a 60 min 10K, and so on. So I am curious to see how long my long training runs end up taking me, and of course the half itself. I just have no idea. The longest run I've ever done was 7 miles in just under 80 minutes, that was back in July.
Great job on your 1 hour 6 miler! I wish I could do that!

Ronda93~ I hope your parents visit went well! I hope your 10K went well today!! I want to hear about it.

Sandy321~ I don't have a garmin either. It's on my wish list. I use my iPhone and an application called Runkeeper to track my runs. It isn't completely accurate though, so I have to sometimes guesstimate what I did. I know the distances around here because I drove them, and I know the time because at least the timer is accurate, so I figure that's adequate.
Thanks for the tips on the photographers on the course.
Keep up the great work, you can do it!!!

ArelysAdriana~ New shoes (and socks) for you too! Are you enjoying them?
How'd your week go with the plan? You know here we are 2 weeks into it, and I didn't do either week as it's written. Didn't do the Saturday run last week since we were out of town and I forgot my running shoes, and this week didn't do 2 runs, and the other 2 were shorter than the plan since I was sick. THIS coming week I will be sticking to the plan, finally! :)
That's neat about the movie set!

DisneyBride'03/Diana~ That'll be SO fun for Laura to be there at the Finish waiting for you! I'm excited for you!!
I was walking 4 miles per hour before I began running this February (that was just my normal fast walk). I highly recommend the Couch to 5K program if you want to start running, it is wonderful.
We had a 2 bedroom at HHI. It was big. Not as big as OKW, but bigger than SSR/BCV/VWL 2 bedrooms. It has a huge deck with 2 rocking chairs and a big picnic table out there!
"night owl wine & dine"
Please post how your 5K goes next month!

dismagiclover/Jenny~ Way to go on your TWO awesome 8 milers!!! You are doing so great girl!!
We WILL be enjoying MK after the race, you have no choice now. lol

luvsTink/Anne~ I'm sure you can do this. You have 8 more weeks to bring your pace down. Keep on training and you'll make it!!

Dolce27~ Than you for sharing your race report. Congrats on making it through that!!!
I don't understand the whole hydration thing. How do you know what the right amount is to drink?! I drink when I'm thirsty, but I haven't ever done more than a 7 mile run. I know things are different for the longer runs.
I did run on Thursday, but a teeny one: 1 mile, with a half mile walk on each end. Pathetic, I know!
I hope your 14 miles went great today! Doing yoga is such a great idea.

JoanneNC~ So what happened with the sitter who never showed up?? Did you get your 10 miler done on the tm?

Jennifer in MI~ Hey you! I was hoping you hadn't left us! I'm sorry you had the h1n1 thing get to you. I'm sure it was awful. How's everyone doing now? It sounds like you are doing great with the running though!

dislvr74~ Congrats on your half, and your new record! I'm sorry it didn't go as well as you would have liked. You'll do better next time, I'm sure! Thank you for sharing that.
Too funny abour that nightmare! At least it wasn't running related! lol

SGcruiser~ My plan only goes up to 26 miles at it's peak week (which is the week of December 14th). This coming week I'm scheduled to do 16. My weekly miles will never be high for long. You are right, we'll be fine!

Duanerice~ Thanks for the post. :goodvibes

dsnyfan21/Tracy~ I looked at the Space Coast website, it looks like a fun race. Enjoy your taper!

MapleGirl~ I'm sure your being sick had something to do with your rough running this week. I know it makes ALL the difference in the world to me. My run this past Thursday was dinky, I walked half a mile, ran a mile, walked half a mile!!! My being sick this week sucked the energy out of me so much. How did your 4 miler go yesterday?
Great job on the "extra" 3 miles today, and in the rain too!

queen mimi/Meg~ I hope your runs in SC go well!
I would love to do the Princess Half next year too...I have to see how my first one goes before I even consider another though.

I think I'm caught up now. :cheer2:

My update:

I'm feeling much better now, yay. But I have to work back up again... I ran on Thursday, but it was a TINY run, 1 mile with a half a mile walk before and after. Today I ran 4 miles, it was gorgeous outside! It was actually pretty hot and the sun was a-beatin' down. I wanted to do 6 miles, but I started feeling light-headed and nauseas so I stopped at 4 (47:00). I think I'll run again tomorrow even though it's not a scheduled run day...to make up for this week a little bit. And then on Monday I begin Week 3 of my training plan:

Hi Liz,
Glad you're feeling better. That's a great chart you posted. I think I'm doing the same plan. I had to play with the days a little because of my night classes, but so far it seems to be working pretty well. Have a great week!
Sierra
