Doing my best to keep my secret!

So on July 4th my 7 year old niece was excitedly watching for all the small fireworks going off around our neighborhood. The rest of us were bored and wanted to go inside, telling her that we've been spoiled by Disney and these little putterings just weren't worth the effort.

I stayed outside with her, telling her we'd see fireworks the next time we go to Disney. I really really REALLY wanted to tell her that would be in 4 more months when we go for her surprise trip, but that would ruin the surprise and defeat the purpose of a surprise trip! So I kept my mouth shut, but I really wanted to let the cat out of the bag!

November 18th can't get here soon enough!!

It's hard keeping a secret like that. I just can't do it, anything from eating a blah burger at burger king and saying hey you are going to love pecos bills its nothing like this yuckiness to seeing the castle logo on a movie opening can set me off into a list of our trip details.

You can do it!! I remember the trips my parents surprised me with, and it made it that much more amazing. I can imagine it must be hard, but once it's time to tell her it'll be so worth it!

I'll give you some encouragement. We are going in October - also a surprise trip for DD (8). I booked it last year in MAY! Not only can I not tell her, but people chit chat so much in this town that I decided not to tell anyone. As I am a single mom I don't even have anyone else in the house to tell! Less than 3 months now. Thankfully I have the DISboards otherwise I would be beside myself.

You will manage. Just think how worth the wait it will be for you and your DD!

Be strong! We're surprising our DS (9) & DD (7) in 4 weeks. I'm having a REALLY hard time not saying anything. At the same time, I realize that them asking everyday when we are leaving would also drive me nuts! How are you going to tell them? I bought each a copy of Birnbaum's WDW for Kids book. "Tinkerbell" & "Lightening McQueen" are writing them notes to tell the kids they can't wait to see them there. I'd love to know how you're going to tell them.

I'm surprising my son in 8 weeks. I'm going to tell him the morning we're leaving so he can say goodbye to his guinea pig. I was thinking of some sort of scavenger hunt, and the final prize to be a new hat and t-shirt. I know he will be absolutely thrilled when he finds out, so I'm determined to keep it a surprise.

It's hard not to say anything, but it will be so exciting to surprise your niece. So fun.

Your post reminded me of something funny... last week we took the girls to Friendly's for dinner. My oldest niece is picky and kept insisting she wouldn't like Friendly's, but we ignored her. We ordered her her usual chicken & french fries and when her dinner come she took a bite and then looked at me and said, "This tastes just like the yummy chicken at Disney World!" She went so far as to make us all try a bite of her chicken. LOL She was right, it reminded me of Disney too.

OMG I can't even imagine if I couldn't tell anyone!! That's got to be really tough! Luckily I have been able to tell a few people.

What a great video!! I did something similar for my oldest nieces 9th birthday. I made a powerpoint slide show using pictures of her from all her past trips. I ended with SURPRISE! We're going back! I video taped the whole thing.

I'm actually only taking one. The 9 year old got her turn in April, so this trip is for my 7 year old niece. My plan is to say I'm going on a business trip (hence the suitcase and packing) and then the morning we're leaving I'm going to go in and wake her up. I'll make her come into my room and do one of two things... 1) either tell her that morning that we're going to Disney OR 2) I may say I decided to take her with me on my business trip. I wont tell her where we're going until we get off the plane and head over to Magic Express. The only problem with scenario #2 is that she's a bit of a momma's girl, she may not want to go if I just say she's coming with me on a business trip. LOL

I love surprises! I am just no good at keeping them. We are surprising the kids for a weekend in Sept. so I get to chat to hubby about it however I booked a surprise breakfast for him I am super excited about and now I have no one to tell! My friends think we are nuts for going back so I don't even bother talking to them about our second trip. It is taking every ounce of self control not to tell the kids who have the Disney blues right now.

It's hard to keep that secret. DH and I found us slipping a few times when DS8 was 4. Thankfully, he didn't pick up on it.

When I did tell him, DH was already down there for a business trip. I tried to wake DS up with the camcorder at 4/4:30 am so I could get his reaction, but the camera wouldn't work . He needed to get up so we could get ready to get to the airport. Instead, I had a very grumpy, groggy 4 year old knocking at my bedroom door upset at me for waking him up so early . I then told him where he was going. You'd think he would be all excited about going to WDW. Nope, he was at me.

He finally got excited when he received a special Disney phone call from Mickey Mouse that I had arranged for 7 am. He had his full attention on that phone call while I finally had a working camcorder filming it. After Mickey said, "See you real soon," his eyes lit up and a smile formed on his face from ear to ear. He looked at me and said, "Can we do that again?!" After that, he couldn't wait to get down to WDW to meet up with his father for a week's vacation.

What lucky nieces you have I think part of the fun is the surprise factors My grown-up daughter never wants to hear about any of the plans we have until each morning because she loves the not knowing and being surprised Sometimes it is so hard for me because I just want to share my plans with her

In March, 2005, after spending three days in Hilton Head, the van turned south rather than north.

Georgia was no problem - we'd just visited Savannah while at Hilton Head.

When we got to the Florida border, the sun visors came down and new DVDs and Game Boy games came out. We lunched at a non-descript McDonalds south of Jacksonville and filled up at non-descript convenience store.

Pulling on to World Drive, our four year old son turned off the DVD player stating, "I'd better turn of the TV - we're going somewhere." Daughters 7 and 10 were busy trying to answer horoscope questions being fired at the older daughter reading a new fact book.

Through the entry arch, past the turn off for MGM Studios, past the Tower of Terror, past the Epcot "golf ball", pulling alongside the monorail - DD 7 head starts jerking left and right looking at the rail.

Pulling about even with the entrance to the MK, reality sets in and our kids realize they are not heading back to Maryland but are, in fact, in WDW. Needless to say there was much excitement when we pulled into WL.

One would have though all the billboards along the way would have provided clues. However, if you've ever traveled south on I-95 through North Carolina, you can help but miss all the Florida attraction "buy your ticket" billboards. Seems the kids just thought we were already back into NC.

Needless to say we'll never pull that on off again.

I'm so sad my kids are grown and I'll never have that opportunity to surprise them again like that.......so I'll just have to wait till the 3 grandkids are a bit older and we'll see

Thanks for all the stories and support. I'm still holding on to my secret and doing my best not to let the surprise slip. This is the longest I've ever had to hold on to a secret. When I surprised my older niece I had planned it within the few days before her birthday and didn't actually book until after I dropped the surprise on her. I had her help me make our arrangements as part of her present. So this is definitely a first for me. In the past my biggest surprises were having gifts waiting for them the morning we were leaving that Mickey Mouse left for them. LOL
