HHEEEELLLLPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP

My doggie is peeing on my carpet and I cant get her to stop!

I am at my wits ehnd here. She has done this 5 times now it isnt for lack of outside time, she gets LOTS of attention I just cannot figure out what she needs or why she is doing this!

DH says she has to stop or we will have to make arrangements for her for another home :(

Please help!!

If she is an adult who was previously housetrained, then please see your vet. She could have a UTI or some other problem. Also, use Nature's Miracle to clean the spots.

You might want to try visiting the vet if it is very frequent.... she may have an infection that needs to be treated.

Are you crate training? If not, that is something to consider until she proves she can handle roaming the house.

You can find tons of advice from the experts at

http://www.greatpets.com/

Their message boards are wonderful, and there is a ton of info on the site.

Good luck with your puppy!!!

Didn't you just get this puppy? Puppies make mistakes, just make sure you let her outside ALL THE TIME, every 15 minutes is necessary. When you take her out, put her in the grass and tell her to go potty. She learn, my puppy was trained in a month and a half, without using a crate.

I have had dogs all of my life so I will give this a shot. I have no vet background this is merely my opinion but they say if you treat the area with an enzyme called natures miracle they won't go back to that spot again. I have rescued a few dogs in my life and they have been the worst problems. It may be that your dog is getting anxious about something. I have found that the males mark there territory more frequently than females. Crate trainingor cnfining the dog to a smaller area is sometimes a big help too. I would call your vet and see what they have to say. How old is your pet? It could be an infection too but my dogs have never had a blatter infection and they have peepeed in the house for no reason. When I started to walk my last rescue regularly she got a lot better. she just didn't like going in the yard in the am. I think she must have been walked first thing everyday before we got her. She still will poop on the floor right while you are nearby if she is ticked about something. Good luck the Nartures Miracle really does work to remove the smell. It does take a few days for it to dry completely but if you poke holes in tin foil and cover the area it does the trck. Good Luck.

How old is the dog? Most dogs have a hard time with housebreaking until they are 4 or 5 months old, or sometimes even older. This is what has always worked for me.

Until she is house trained ---- In the crate or connected to an adult by a leash. :) For Mikey I had a long (about 6 foot) leash that connected to my belt loop and we spent lots and lots of time together those first couple of months. :)

If you see her going in the house. Say STOP!! loud enough to startle her into stopping and quickly get her outside to an appropriate spot. If you make the mistake of letting her on her own and she makes an accident, clean it up but forget about correcting her or rubbing her nose in it or any of that other stuff. You need to catch her in the act, or she won't understand the problem.

Also - take her outside every couple of hours to the spot you have picked out. When she does the job, give her lots of praise, maybe even a small treat.

Ok Natures Miracle. Got it! Can I buy that at Petco?

She is a 3 year old female from the shelter. She was spoiled rotten from what I can tell.

She is a good dog other than this one thing! Walking might relaly help, she goes out with the dh and Cam but not every day. That would probably help a lot! Thanks for the suggestions keep them coming :)

Are you giving her lots of praise when she pees outside? How about a biscuit and a "GOOD GIRL!!!" when she pees outside and a "BAD GIRL!!!" when she pees inside (you have to catch her in the act though). Dogs usually want to please. It will probably take a while. Try to keep her out of the carpeted areas for a while too.

Where does she potty? Our dog frequently left puddles right next to the back door. We finally figured out that he didn't know how to "tell" us that he wanted to go out. I got a bell and hung it by the door and rang it every time we went outside. It took about a month or so, but now he rings his bell when he needs to go out. I also started saying "outside" when we walked out the door. Now I can ask, "Do you want to go outside?" If he runs to the door and acts excited, I take him out. If he acts uninterested, I leave him alone.

Tell your DH to be reasonable. She's a DOG. She has to be trained. You just GOT her. Even if the pound said she was housebroken, you have NO idea what her life was like (maybe this is why her previous family got rid of her) previously and she has just come from a pound where she probably peed in her cage and someone came and cleaned it up.

Take her outside every 15 - 30 minutes if you have to. Wait for her to do her business, even if you have to wait forever. When she DOES - PRAISE her a LOT. Realistically, you may have to do this over and over again until she gets the idea.

Until you get this through to her - get her a crate and keep her in it - especially at night and when you are not home to watch her. She will more than likely NOT pee in her crate, but will rush out the door to do so as soon as you let her out.

Give her a very definite WAY to let you know that she needs to go out. (We hang Christmas bells on our doorknob and our dogs hit them with their noses when they need to go out.)

5 accidents is NO reason to give up on a dog. Period.:(

Nature's miracle helps kill the odor, but it doesn't necessarily mean the pet won't pee there again. So when you buy it, don't expect a miracle to happen.

How old is the dog? Sometimes it can take almost up to a year for a dog to be totally and completely potty trained.

Dogs usually go on a schedule. For a week try and write down the dog's schedule. What time it eats, what time it pees and poops. You'll find the dog usually goes around the same time every day and within a certain time after it eats. Once you know this, you'll know that the dog ate 30min ago, so you should take it out right away because that's when it normally goes.

You just got the dog recently. It's a new environment for it and it's probably a little scared still and not used to his surroundings. We moved from an apt to a house in September and I had to completely retrain my beagles because it was a new place and a new routine for them.

You also might want to call your vet. The dog might have a bladder infection or a UTI that's causing this.
5 accidents is really not much at all. It's important to remember that you just got this dog and all dogs have accidents. You just need to train and praise.

Please, I beg you- do not give up on this dog. I don't mean to sound harsh but when you get a dog you make a committment to it for its life. Giving a dog up because it's taking a while to potty train is cruel :(

"Walking might relaly help, she goes out with the dh and Cam but not every day"

You didn't mean that she doesn't get out every day, did you?

No advice, we are still working with our puppy. He does pretty good but I think he's trained us more than we've trained him. As long as he's taken out often he does fine but doesn't tell us when he needs to go.

I'm having my DD try keeping him on his leash all day and see if that will help. He has good habits just need to work with him more. The bells might be a good idea for him too.

He also has a crate and has never had an accident in it. He doesn't like being left alone but will nap in his crate and not complain as long as we are close by.

Here's my 2 cents worth....most accidents are our fault, not the dogs. We aren't paying attention. (know this from much experience with non-attention). When she has an accident, take her outside immediatly. If she continues her peeping, then praise her as if she had just turned straw into gold!!! Pay no attention to accidents. Pretend they never happened, just clean it up and go on with your day. Only positive reinforcement. Nature's Miracle is terrific. I would either crate her (making it easier to 'catch' her doing a good job) or confine her to a room with a tile floor(easier to clean up). When you release her from the crate, she goes right outside, hopefully to do her 'business'. This is the best time for all that 'oh, what a great job...what a great girl...you are so terrific' etc. Much ado. It is a hard job to train an older dog, but the rewards are great also. You must be a special kind of person to rescue in the first place, so hang in there....it WILL happen. Good luck and give that pup a hug from me!!!

My cousin just got a new puppy and has had great success with what is called a Piddle Pad. Now I don't have a clue what it is or where to get one, but I can ask.

If she was in a shelter where she was "forced" to potty in her living area, it could have been extremely traumatic for her. We adopted one last year who needed vet care because he had tried to "hold it" while at the shelter (breaks my heart!). Please get her to the vet for testing, then do what everyone has said above. Food and water on a consistent schedule, out to go potty afterwards, always either within your eyesight or in a crate. No, it's not easy, but taking on a dog is a commitment. Nothing free at this point (food, run of the house, etc) except your love...
Good luck!

Thanks everyone for the advice. I just meant that my dh has really had it with the mess this is a newer house and we really dont want to have to replace the carpets allready, you know?

I found the piddle pads today at Petco and I am trying them. They said she may have issues that need to be dealt with and to call the shelter and ask. They said that 5 accidents in a week was too much to be "adjustment" issues.

I also bought the Nature's Miracle and will try that soon.

No I didnt mean that she wasn't getting out that infrequently. :) I just meant that we werent walking her every day like we probably should be :) She gets outside for a couple of hours two or three times a day.

Thanks again everyone

Binny -

I personally wouldn't recommend the pads for an adult dog who you are going to want to "do her job" outside. They really are meant for people who can't get home often enough during the day, and need an appropriate place for their dog to go inside the house.

If you use them, you are going to first be telling her that it is ok to go inside, and then later you are going to be saying "Wait No - We really only want you to go outside!!!" It's adding an extra step to the process and you may never be able to break her completely of the inside habit.

2 or 3 times a day isn't enough during the housebreaking process. You really need to get her outside more often in order to create plenty of chances for her to do the job correctly and be praised.

And really overdo the praise when she's good. Make it seem like she just accomplished the most extraordinary act in the history of the world. :) Dogs love praise.

Binny, just wanted to say good luck and keep trying! Your doggie does want to please you, but just doesn't get it yet. It'll take time and lots of patience but like everyone said...PRAISE,PRAISE,PRAISE...it really does work. We also taught our dog a word...felt like an idiot doing it, but whenever we took Ruby out when we first got her, we'd say go potty Ruby, go potty in that really icky sweet, excited voice and when she went or as she was going we'd say GOOD POTTY! Now, (she's 6months and we've had her since she was 11 weeks) we say Do you need to potty? and if she does, she jumps around and gets all excited and goes out and does her stuff. She has only had 1 accident in the last month and goes out less frequently than when we were trying to first communicate with each other. It seemed like I was constantly taking her out, but it worked. Tell hubby to be patient, it'll happen.

I pee more than 3 times a day. I'd be peeing on myself, too!
