Dog with no teeth. Help!!

I know this is a weird story and I know its hard to believe. But it is true. I was shocked and mad when I first noticed, then I went into what does my dog need now mode. I called the vet as soon as possible, he had no explanation. He said he never saw Simon, the vet techs were with him and took care of him.
I love my dog and want the best for him. He will be going to a new vet tomorrow and I will find out more then.

Thanks for the update, celiesky. It is a strange situation. Did you get to look into his mouth today? What's going on in there?

I would march myself right into the vet's office and demand to see his records. There has to be records of pulling teeth somewhere. Even if they pulled the wrong dog's teeth, obviously, the records have to be somewhere. Even if it where in another dog's chart. I would insist that they find out where those records are!!!!

I want to thank the OP for this question. I have a Jack Russell who had some teeth pulled so they left him with a few. Now he has 5 teeth because he jumps at the front door and hangs on it slowly loosening his teeth. I have come to find blood on the doorknob and teeth on the ground. he is very neurotic...we even put bells on the door and he still jumps and hangs there. I feel bad for him but he has been eating hard food and chewing on bones like the other big dogs. But now that I know other dogs with NO teeth can eat, I will just keep an eye on him. I still love him with all his neurosies!(sp)

Don't worry about rude, hateful people. I didn't think you were lying. A 14 yr. old dog, who knows what could have happened....maybe the teeth were hanging by a thread. Just keep him comfortable and with soft food and he will be fine.

I am at a total loss as to what to think. Of course I would switch vets but not before I marched right back to the current one demanding an answer to WHERE ARE MY DOGS TEETH? Wasn't the vet even curious to examine the dog and resolve this mystery, rather than passing the buck to the vet techs.

My 11 yr old dog had 3 teeth extracted last month and was on baby food or soft food for a week. I just don't get why so passive about this.

I'm confused. If they were pulled, the dog would show signs of recovering from surgery. I've had animals with teeth pulled.

If they just fell out on their own, what are the odds that all of them just fell out? I had a pet who had a very bad tooth (unknown to us) and it did just fall out. We found it on the carpet.

This same animal had frequent tooth problems. Another time we had some pulled. She was much happier after this. Her attitude more upbeat & more friendly. It told us she had been in pain for some time due to her teeth & we didn't realize it.

So my question is: how bad were his teeth before? A history of bad teeth? What was his demeanor? Did it appear he was in pain even if just not appearing happy? These answers would lead you to whether they just all fell out at the same time on their own or if someone removed them.

As for animal with no teeth eating dry food whole, expect more digestive problems. Possibly more vomiting of whole food. I personally would switch to canned food. Its not like he needs the dry food anymore to combat tarter.

I don't know if the story is real or not, but I'm really stuck on the part where they "can't" look in the dog's mouth because the dog "won't let them".

True story or not, it drives me nuts it when dogs own people instead of the other way around.

Can you imagine if the mistake surgery or procedure was something even more serious? Like they put down the wrong animal?

I've only ever boarded an animal once. She needed medical care and couldn't find anyone who could do it at our home. I felt horrible the entire time we were gone because of stories I've heard.

Now I always leave the animal home and go out of my way to make multiple arrangements to have the animal cared for there. Even older animals with daily medical needs. Its lots of work to find such people, but I just can't board my animals.

No opinion on those that do. Sometimes its your only option. Like I said, I did it once.

My sister has a 17 year old chihuahua who has absolutely no teeth. They were all pulled about 8 years ago due to infections. He has been perfectly healthy since then (read 17 years old). He eats dry puppy food, the tiny kind. He swallows it whole and has no problems at all.

I know. I worded that a bit odd didn't I?

I suppose that once a dog clamps his mouth shut, that's it. I would probably be rolling on the floor with him first though.

A previous poster suggested maybe he was scared and chewed on the bars the whole time he was in the cage, this seems the only reasonable explanation to me. He was an older dog, and could have damaged his teeth this way, but I would be raising heck until I got a resaonable explanation and had the dog checked elsewhere.

Just for the heck of it, I googled dogs missing teeth. Found a few other odd stories there but it does indeed, surprisingly, seem like it can happen. Usually people find the teeth on the carpet or something, though. And usually it's one to four at a time, not a whole mouthful.

That actually looks very natural. Unless you looked real close, it's tough to determine whether those are his real teeth or not.

We have a Chihuahua that is fast on the path to having no teeth. She had lost several before we rescued her and had 8 teeth extracted last year. At her physical before our Disney trip, the vet said that even though she is taking antibiotics each month to prevent further damage, she already looked like she was going to be losing more teeth. Thanks to this thread, it reminded me that it was time to call and make her February dental appointment. In February, dental cleanings are discounted.

Even with all of the missing teeth, nothing much stops her. We make sure that her food pellets are small. She still gets treats like the others and will work on a nylabone or rawhide as long as she can before someone steals it from her. She is just the sweetest little dog. I do worry about the day when she has no teeth left, but for now, she doesn't let much stop her.

As for the OP's situation, it sounds like sometime is dead in Denmark on that one. I would be livid if any of my dogs came home with no teeth after being boarded....that includes the one with only a few teeth left.
