We had to put our dog to sleep last week. He was a 12 year old yellow lab/white shepard mix. It was bone cancer. It was a 4-year love affair, we adopted him when he was 8 years old.

DH and I had actaully applied to a lab rescue several days before we found out about the cancer, as we were toying with the idea to bring a new dog into our home. (We would never have done that had we known of our dog's cancer.) Eventhough we were devastated about putting our dog down, we still opted to do the phone interview with a lab rescue the day after. Our thought was it would take several weeks for the approval process, and then maybe months to find the right dog... but if the right dog came up on the website, we wanted to be ready.

Yesterday, a new dog showed up on the website. She is 12 years old. And was relinqiushed due to allergies with the former owners baby. This dog sounds perfect for us. We aren't necessarily looking for a 12 year old, but the personality and termperment this dog appears to have is perfect for us, so we have e-mailed the "match committee" about this dog.

Now - yesterday, we had our house cleaned. Just ran out of time, and needed someone to do it. So - I know there wasn't anything on the floor in the family room.

(And...as I have been telling a coworker all week - I would love a sign of some sort that Riley would have wanted us to have another dog.).

So this morning...it wasn't exactly a "penny" that caught our eye. In front of the couch, there was a tennis ball.

awww. i would be crying right now.

I am a lab lover myself . Its an amazing thing that you would take a 12 year old pup into your life (and absolutely crazy to me that someone would get rid of one but thats besides the point). Good luck with your new addition!

Aww...I would take it as a sign that your dog approves. And it's wonderful that you are willing to take a 12 year old dog who deserves to live the rest of its life in a loving home.

Maybe I am just hormonal, but that brought tears to my eyes, too! And for you to be willing to adopt a 12 yo dog is just wonderful! I hope the match committee sees the match too! Let us know! Good luck!

oh...and pictures!!!! Can you link to her website so we can see the 12 year old?

Bless your heart for taking her in in the sunset of her life..may she have many years left with her new family. I can't imagine how confused she must feel if she has been with the same family all of her life. New baby comes..and she must go. Sad.:sad1:

All around - it is a sad story. I can't say I blame the former family. If I was continually taking an 18 month old to the ER, I would probably be making the same decision too.

And - if we do not get this dog...(but I hope we do) then there is another family that will be giving this girl a great home instead. Of course, we haven't met her yet, maybe she won't like us. Complicating things, DH and I are going out of town tomorrow, so we can't possibly meet her until next weekend.

ok, the tennis ball made me cry. Labs are awesome dogs, and if I had the resources, I would get as many old ones as I can-they deserve to live their twilight years being pampered and spoiled.

she is so beautiful! I am a firm believer that if it is meant to be, it will be, so here's hoping you end up with her!

Ella sounds wonderful. As LucyStorm said if it's meant to be ....

If not, there is another family for Ella which will make room for you to be able to adopt another special dog.

Oh, this brought tears to my eyes! After our 13 year old basset died, we had SO many "signs" that she was still around, looking after us and keeping us company. Your little guy wants you to be loved by a new doggy in a way he can't right now.

omg i am sitting here sobbing. that story just made me cry
your potential new pup looks like a true sweetheart!
good luck,
and I am sorry to hear of your loss.

That story gave me goose bumps. And bless you for taking an older dog. You cannot imagine the joy that you will get from that. Jude came to live with us when he was 8 years old. I knew he was an "older dog", and I vowed I wouldn't get a attached, but we fell in love at first sight. I am comforted by the memory that I made the last three years of his life comfortable, happy and loving. He gave us much more however than we gave him.

Sorry for the loss of your dog, it is never easy. But I agree with everyone, that it is really nice of you to take in an older dog! Not everyone will do that so Kudos to you :thumbsup2
I have been following on Facebook this Man and his two dogs they walked 2000 miles to bring awareness about Canine Cancer. Here is the link

Hi! I am a big believer in "messages", even from animals. I believe I have gotten a few from our dog. We had to put him down after he became so arthritic he could no longer walk. Of course the whole famiy was devestated. He was a "herder" & loved to run & chase birds & squirrels. So as he was leaving us, I told him to go run in the Big Yard.

Two days later, I happened to be googling something online. I picked a random link, not the first one. It was listed as 100 pictures of what I was checking. It showed up as small thumbnail pictures, so you needeed to click & enlarge to see what it was. So again, I click on a random picture. There, next to the subject, was a street sign with the number "1600". ( Now if I am told an address is "1600" anything, I automatically think of the White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave & the big lawn that surrounds it.) So here is the picture of a street sign & above the "1600" is my dog's name! :scared1:

So then I think my dog is sending me a message that he is in the "big yard". Later that day, I was telling a family member & thinking I must be crazy for thinking I got a message from my dead dog. I bumped into some furniture as I was talking & knocked some things off. Sitting there was a single quarter. The year on it was the year the dog was born. :scared1:

So, I do believe your dog sent you a message. I hope it brought you comfort. I hope it works out with the new dog. It seems he might have been sent to you from above! :goodvibes

That story gave me goosebumps too!

I have a story like that of my own: A little over 5 years ago, our dog Blackie passed away. He was the sweetest, gentlest dog I have ever had. We don't know what kind of dog he was, but was always told he looked like a Flat Coat Retriever (looks kind of like a black Golden Retriever). He even protected my DD then 5 from a snake once (stood in front of her and wouldn't let her go near the snake).

Two weeks after Blackie died, I was driving by a bookstore and saw a sign for a pet adoption. On a whim, I walked in the bookstore, and the very first dog I saw shocked me: it looked EXACTLY like my Blackie! She was laying on the floor, in the midst of all this chaos with people and other dogs, just looking at me. I walked over, petted her, and fell in love with this 6 month old sweet dog named Sadie who was Blackie's spitting image. I took her home that day.

I will always feel like Blackie somehow sent this dog to me (or sent me to this dog).
