Tazz seems to have itchy ears. He keeps shaking his head. :confused3 I took a flashlight and looked inside. I remember when we first got our cat 7 years ago, she had mites and I remember what her ears looked liked (coffee ground appearance). Tazz's ears look clean, not red or sore looking..........heck, I didn't even see anything remotely resembling wax. There is also no foul smelling gook in his ears. He has not had a bath recently and has not been swimming in the pool.

Any ideas what could be causing this? Ironically, his ears didn't start itching until yesterday morning.........roughly 12 hours after that mouse showed up on my doorstep (in case you missed that post, someone dropped their pet mouse off the other night, leaving the mouse, the cage and all the supplies on our front porch  )

One of my dogs has allergies & gets itchy ears.. the vet recommended benedryl & the occasional ear wash. I really feel for him when it flares up (last night in fact!!) He gets really grumpy & uncomfortable. Good luck!

My dog had that a few weeks ago. Took him into the vet, and he had an ear infection. So then I had the fun of putting drops in his ears 2x a day. He would scratch like crazy, felt bad for him.

Take him to the vet...he probably has a yeast infection.

I work for a vet, let me let you in on a secret. Not so much a secret to us but maybe to you.
Some people let their dog carry an ear infection way too long. If the dog continues to scratch, and shake his head he could cause the blood vessels to burst. That causes something called an aural hematoma. It would have to be drained and that could cost big bucks.
My suggestion...get the dog to the vet, get some otomax, or whatever your vet recommends.
You don't want a bigger vet bill or your dog to be miserable.

Our dog had some ear issues at time and got hematomas in his ears from shaking his head so much. Hope it clears up soon.

One of our ridgebacks used to have trouble with his ears, not an infection but a build up of dirt or seeds or whatever, deep in the ear. We used to get something called Sancerum from the vet. If possible we would squirt it deep into each ear or dip cotton wool in it and wipe it as far in as we could get it. Normally the later method was more effective because, with the first one, he would shake his head vigorously and it would end up everywhere except in the ear!
We did this every week or so, even if he wasn't showing signs of a problem by scratching his ears or rubbing them against your leg.

This happened with my brother and his dog...he waited too long and the dog got an aural hematoma, and yep...cost him a LOT!
I wipe my pups ears out weekly with a baby wipe and so far, no ear infections.

You need to regularly clear you dog hear to protect them from any ear infection.

I could have written this post. We found it far easier to "tag-team" the dog. DH would hold him and we did the "infected ear" first, then the other one. Definitley treats afterwards. The one night DH went to bed before we did the ear meds - Katy was so ticked at me - she immediately went upstairs, body-slammed the door, and went in by DH - like she was telling on me.:rotfl:

Mine have allergies, shake the head, lick the paws. I give them benadryl 1 mg per pound of weight. The one can take a whole one. the other one uses a 1/2.

I have a dog that has allergies with the itching. I took her to the vet of course and she has nothing, naturally, but I did double check.

Did nobody notice this is a zombie post from 2005?? Resurrected by a first time poster, probably just to gather up the 10 posts needed to post whatever spam link they've got.
