I am okay, not a real dog lover but am okay with them. However, my dh & I were invited to my sil's for a BBQ. Things were okay until I went to get a drink from the kitchen and saw that they had put the plates that they had carried the meat in on the floor. They had given everyone their meat and then put the plate on the floor so that their dog could lick it. After they finished their plates they would bring it to the kitchen for the dog. We had dessert and again after they were finished the dog got his dessert. I was really grossed out. Do people really think this is okay?

I've also seen people allow their cats to walk all over their kitchen counters; kitchen table; drink out of cereal bowls; etc.. So I would say, yes - there are people who think it's okay..

We had family friends that always let their dog lick the plates, in the kitchen, after dinner, it always shocked me when we went there for dinner. For what it's worth dogs mouths are actually very clean; but I wouldn't do it in my house, not only because I think it is disgusting but, mostly because I don't feel comfortable feeding my dogs most people foods, especially sweets.

as long as they didn't reuse the plates without washing them ;)

jk... it is a little weird but i dont see anything wrong with it IF they werent having guests over. I would NEVER do that. When it's just them? I say who cares. But I agree with you...weird and gross.

I would be providing the paper plates the next time I go visit them.:rotfl2: I love my dog, but I wouldn't eat out of her dish and she won't be eating off of mine.

I let my dog lick the plates when we get done eating mac and cheese. We're carefull of what we feed her and would never give her our deserts. I will also allow her to eat the grisel of meat. It makes cleaning up the plates a lot easier, no crusty dried on nasty stuff to worry about, so it comes out cleaner in the dishwasher.
Although I would never allow for her to eat off my plate while I'm still eating. I also don't do it in front of company, unless they're comfortable with the idea. I can't stand people that literally let thier dog eat off thier fork in the middle of dinner.

A dogs mouth might be cleaner but I really was grossed out by it. I had a hard time eating.

It's a little skeevy and not something I would do, but to me it's not a big deal as I'm assuming hey send the plates through the dishwasher when they are done. To me it's no more gross than eating off of a fork or spoon that another person who may or may not have been sick has eaten off of. It all gets washed.

FWIW, I have two cats and yes, they do get on the counters, not sure how to prevent that. But I always wipe down the counters before preparing food and never set food directly on the counters. It's always on a clean plate or cutting board (which are kept in a cupboard before being used).

I guess I have problems with it because at my dbil's house they had a dog. We ate there once and I did throw up. I went to eat and realized that there was dog hair on the place mat, on my cutlery, my plate and my food. I looked in the cutlery drawer to get another set and realized that the drawer was full of dog hair.

Seriously? That is gross! How does one even get dog hair in their cutlery drawers? I have two dogs as well, but they can't get on things the way cats can. Even with the cats walking all over I've never found hair in my food/cutlery/plates, etc. After that, I can't blame you for being grossed out!

LOL, our dogs lick our plates all the time.......:)
yes the plates go thru the dishwasher, and no I wouldn't do it when guests are here, just out of consideration.
but yep they lick the plates all the time.
they lick my face too :)
I have also been known to give them a bite of my ice cream right off the spoon i am using, and yes I keep using it.
now you all know my dark secrets...........LMBO!

Sorry. I have no problem with the dog licking my plate. It goes in the dishwasher afterward, so I'm sure it is clean for the next use. Of course, I let the cat lick ice cream off my finger. And, yes, I touch my ice cream with the same finger she just licked to get her some more. I'm not a real squeamish person. Germs don't really freak me out.

John went to visit his 90 year old grandfather in a very secluded, rural area of Saskatchewan .

After spending a great evening chatting the night away, the next morning John's grandfather prepared breakfast of bacon, eggs and toast. However, John noticed a film like substance on his plate, and questioned his grandfather asking, "Are these plates clean?"

His grandfather replied, "They're as clean as cold water can get em. Just you go ahead and finish your meal, Sonny!"

For lunch the old man made hamburgers. Again, John was concerned about the plates as his appeared to have tiny specks around the edge that looked like dried egg and asked,

"Are you sure these plates are clean?"

Without looking up the old man said, "I told you before, Sonny, those dishes are as clean as cold water can get them. Now don't you fret, I don't want to hear another word about it!"

Later that afternoon, John was on his way to a nearby town and as he was leaving, his grandfather's dog started to growl, and wouldn't let him pass.

John yelled and said, "Grandfather, your dog won't let me get to my car."

Without diverting his attention from the football game he was watching on TV, the old man shouted "Coldwater, go lay down now, yah hear me!"
;)

assuming folks have a dishwasher, the dishes get heated to 160 degrees and utterly sterilized.

meh. I don't care, anyway. dog's mouth never made anyone sick :rolleyes1

I am not a dog lover; I am a cat person, however, I was surprised that so many people were shocked over a dog licking a plate. I don't see what the big deal is, seems perfectly fine to me. It would never have occurred to me that would bother a guest in my home. And I would assume that my sister in law is close enough to me that I can be myself when they are over for dinner. They are family, not guests. I am genuinely surprised to learn so many people feel it is poor etiquette to let a pet lick a plate.

There is absolute evidence that this is a myth. Dogs lick their butts, eat garbage, and chew on dead things in the yard, not to mention some have been known to eat poop. They are not clean.

However, as far as risk of passing on disease to humans by licking a plate, there's little to worry about as diseases that dogs get generally do not jump species. If the dishes are washed in the dishwasher or with very hot water and with antibacterial soap, realistically, there is nothing to fear as far as getting sick. For me, it's just the "ewwww" factor of imagining poopy germs on a plate that a human will eat off of. Logically, I know it's probably not harmful, but it really is kinda gross to me.

So do none of you ever put raw meat on any of your plates?

When I'm grilling, I often put the meat on a plate to take it out to the grill. Obviously it gets washed before it's used to serve food on, so what's the difference between that and letting a dog lick a plate? I don't really care what's been on a plate, as long as it's been washed before I eat off it.

Same here. I see nothing wrong with it. My animals don't even have their own treat dishes for when they get canned treat food. I just put it in a cereal bowl and put it on the floor. All the dishes go through the sanitizing cycle on the dishwasher anyway so it's not a big deal to me. If people don't like it, they can bring paper plates with them, but no one has ever had an issue. Most people I know do the same thing so I guess they don't think it is a big deal either.

I don't have a problem with it. The dishes go into the dishwasher, the water is heated to 160 degrees. There's nothing in a dog's mouth that is going to survive 160 degrees. We have an acquaintance that we have recently found out is cheating on his wife with multiple women and has over the years. He's been at my house for dinner a few times and I let him eat off my plates. A dog's got nothing worse than he probably has! ;)
