Dog in a parked car

I've heard a story like this before not that long ago. I'm sure it happens in DLR a lot. It makes me so sad. I can't imagine leaving my dogs in the car for that long. Good for you, OP for calling security. I would have left a nasty letter on their car.

I wish that I would have, maybe not exactly nasty but just something letting them know that it's really dangerous for a dog to be left in a parked car like that for hours. I don't see how, but maybe they really thought that since the car wasn't in the sun and the windows were cracked, it was okay. I just can't imagine anybody willingly putting their dog in jeopardy all to save the $20 it would cost to board the dog at the DL kennel for the day. Why have a dog if that's all the care and compassion you have for him

This makes me sick. It's so sad. Just take your dog to the "kennel" in DL!!! I mean it's at least better to crate them then leave them in your car all day. I would have called the police....yes I would have and then I would have waited by the car until the police showed up.

I have worked as the Executive Director of a Humane Society for over 5 years. It is very heartbreaking when things like this happen. While the security officer at DL has no rights to "break into" a car (by the way no civilian has a right either even if the dog is in a coma from heatstroke) the police should have been called. The police can assess if the dog is in serious trouble and then attempt to contact the owner in the park. If that is not possible then the officer can use a slim jim to open the car door and then ticket the individual as well as take the dog to the proper animal control. Depending on the severity of the situation they will either charge the person with animal neglect/cruelty and hold the animal until trial or just ticket them with a warning and release the dog/cat/goat whatever into the owners custody. A lot of people just don't realize how hot a car can get even in the shade, even in the winter. It is a very sad thing when people, out of stupidity, leave their pets and come back to find a dead pet. Just remember in the future, calling the police in will be a better bet than security.

In our city it is illegal to leave a pet in the car and the police can break your window if needed to get the pet out and you will get a fine.

That really makes me sick that someone would do that.

I totally agree, get the police involved, take legal matters into the situation and get that dog out of the car immediately! Ugh!!! That is one of the most cruelest things I've ever heard of, yet, sorry to say, haven't heard it the first time. The levels below Minnie of the parking structure are in the shade, but that's not the point. How would they like it if they were locked in a small, confined area with no proper ventilation? Not very much, huh? This kind of thing ticks me off so much, you have no idea.

Omg, that makes me sick! I just cannot stand to see people mistreat their pets. Of course, people leave their children in the car on hot days so why it surprises me that some idiot would leave their dog in the car shouldn't surprise me at all.

Kinda makes you want to leave them in a parked car on a hot day and see how they like it.

Some people just shouldn't own pets.

Just like some people shouldn't have kids. I've seen pets left in cars before. And one time children in a car (not at Disneyland.) I told the police and they did nothing. It is ridiculous what people can get away with.

I saw 2 kids in a car once, windows all the way up and it was about 100 degrees outside. Dad was inside the bank, I thought he might just be at the bank but when he didn't come back after about 5 minutes we called the cops. Both kids were already in the car when we pulled up and so we knew they were out there for way too long. The dispatcher said they had an officer on the way and about that time the guy comes out of the bank, gets in his car and just pulls away (after yelling at his son to shut the f up, this poor boy had been screaming when we pulled up, his face was red and he was sweating) we told dispatch and she asked if we could follow discreetly so they could actually stop him, we did and stayed on the phone with dispatch. After a moment or two telling her where we were she said, "Ok, go ahead and back off, the officer is at the next corner and another is at his home where the car is registered" so we left. But we did see the officer pull out behind him. I don't know what happened but I was glad we called and very happy they seemed to take it so seriously.
