Sabre our 11 year old yellow lab is heading to the vets tomorrow for a growth type thing on his elbow.

He had what looked like a calous, on his left elbow for a while- few months maybe- always looked hard, dry like a calous...

Wednesday night, he was licking it, I told him to stop...he did (good dog)...but this morning, when I looked at it- its pink, raw looking, wet looking...looks like a warty type thing.

It's about 1 inch round, and sticks out about 1/4-1/2 inch. It looks raw, doesnt seem to be oozing anything, doenst stink etc.

He's had a few fatty cysts removed, which I understand yellow labs get as they age, but this thing looks NOTHING like that.

I'm asuming they're going to cut this thing off..but its just nasty looking!

any idea what this could be or what it's caused from?

Thanks
Brandy

I would have said fatty tumour as I know, as you have stated, older dogs get them. I hope this is not anything more than that.

Could be a sebacius (sp) cyst. They're harmless and may not even need to be removed. We had a miniature poodle that had one on top of his head (looked like a little monk when he had his head shaved when it was removed).

We had a golden retriever for 12 years (just had him put down in June ) He had a callous for years on his front left elbow. The vet said it was from lying on the cement of our porch. We have lived here for 5 years so it makes sense that it would irritate his skin. Have you recently moved? Buddy (my golden) seemed to have a reaction to the new cement on our back porch. It was completely harmless however it didn't always look so nice. It made the fur red around it but never really bled. I would assume this is what your lab has also. Good luck ~ I'm sure it is nothing too serious. Enjoy your dog while you have him ~ we miss Buddy like crazy. My kids are 5 & 7 and talk about him all the time. :(

The more I look at it- which he lets me touch around it etc.. without any movement on his part...the more it looks like one of those red coin candies- only way I can describe it- like a lifesaver, only no hole LOL and squishy like a gummy fruit snack LOL

The vet didnt seem to concerned, as his appt is not until tomorrow
However, they're gonna have to remove it, as he keeps licking it!

We havent moved, and he always is laying on his huge pillow that we replace the stuffing in regularly.

He's getting up there, and I can tell in the last 6-8 months he's starting to feel his age. he use to run with us when we took the 4-wheelers out. now he has a hard time as much as he wants to, just to keep up with DD8 whose quad is governed at 6mph!...We try to keep him either in the Pool house at DMIL's or inside her house when we go riding, but he whines at the door etc... then if he does go with us, I always go slow for him so he can trot, instead of run, and he still ends up "sleeping" for 2 days after!

My DD's adore this dog, he has to be one of the best family dogs I've ever seen/had! DH has said though, after him, no more...just too much emotional attachment with DH to even think about another! he use to go with DH in the trash trucks before Dh sold his company...he loved riding in the 10 wheelers!....but that was back when he could jump up in em!

thanks guys!

I forget what they are called, but our Golden got them on both his front elbows as he got older. They never removed them though, even when he licked them raw. Good luck!
