A friend of a coworker has a couple of puppies they can't keep. The only info I have about the dogs is that they are some kind of purebred shepherd. Can someone identify this puppy?

Hard to tell but the best guess I have from that picture would be an Australian Shepard based on the coloring. :)

Whoops.. I meant Australian Cattle Dog.. I always get those two confused :)

I'm no expert, but I wonder about this being an Australian Cattle Dog. Brindle (the stripes) is not a listed color for them. (Simon and Schuster's Guide to Dogs. It really looks like a German Shepherd to me, or a Belgian Turveren, but it is hard to tell from the picture.. Unfortunately, my dog book, and many others usually only have pictures of adults. The pupply could look totally different than and adult...

It is a really cute puppy, though.. I would definitely find out what it was before I would commit. Australian Cattle Dogs have "an atavistic habit of biting at the heels of cows (and people.) per my book..

I've never seen a brindle Aussie, the are usually a blue or red molted pattern, but brindle is a very common color pattern for pit bulls around here. (don't panic - just an observation! :) )

Very pretty pup no matter what he is!

I thought the same thing, about the pit bull. ( I would panic, I am very afraid of pit bulls.)

No flames please, just a phobia of mine...

I thought the same thing....no flames here.

Can you bring the photo to a breeder or vet to see if they can identify the breed?

from this angle it does not have a Pit face, looks more shepherd like

pit really do have a horrid reputation that is not deserved..no flames as I myself am wary of german sheps..been attacked by plenty of sheps while working at a kennel..and have know nothing but sweet pits.

People make a dog nasty...and any dog can be nasty, Unfortunetly since people like to use the breed for fighting...they get the raw end of the deal by being forced to fight and by society who places the blame on the dog and not the cruel people who train them to be this way. there are so many pitbulls that are put to sleep each year because people belive the stories and have never known the breed itself.
