A girl here in town is/was breeding her Pug. I spoke to her a really long time ago and have been waiting on the pups. I called tonight to see what the scoop was and apparently the ( Breeding didn't take) So no Pug puppy. The boys were pretty dissapointed since I have been telling them since October to wait until MArch... Anyway... Theres an ad in the paper a person her in my town tried to breed her Brittany spaniel and Lo and behold they came out half pug. First of all I can not imagine what they look like.

I was wondering opinion as to temperment of this mix? It seems someone here has a brittany in thier sig?

You could only learn the temperment of the one dog she DOES know, that is her Brittany. Since the pug was a surprise, I would think she doesn't even know who the father is, so you wouldn't have a clue about the temperment, health, or genetics of that dog. HOPEFULLY she is a responsible breeder and has done genetic testing and such on her own dog, so you would have that to lean on, but the other part would be a mystery... I think overall pugs have good personalities, but they do have some genetic health issues, so it would just depend on how much this puppy got of that.

Does that make any sense?

I think I'm trying to say that since that combo is not a breed, there are no known temperments to go off of, this pup could get the worst traits of both, or the best. Your best bet is to check on the dog that you can get information on and just take a risk on the other half and what it pulls into the picture =)

Would be quite an interesting mix... just do a google search on brittanys and you'll find loads of pictures and information.

I'm sorry you didn't get the pug you were waiting on =( There are LOTS of pug rescues, though, if you really love the breed, you might luck out and get one that way!

The lady Iwas getting the Pug from and the mixed pups are 2 differant people. Neither family was a breeder. The first family bred the dog once and this was to be the final time. I was very interested in her becuase of background stuff you have mentioned,

The second was simply a neighbors pug and her Brittany so there would be info available.

I did do a search and it says Brittanys are pretty hyper. (Not desirable to me.)
My boys preschool taher has, had 3 Brittanys and loves them to death., I hate to look and get suckered because they are cute.

Yeah, I knew the people were different, but I had a hard time getting out my thoughts tonight ;) I'm in the middle of writing and paper and still trying to DIS at the same time, LOL.

At least you can meet the pug parent as well, and spend time with them - maybe they have paperwork on their pug, with health information for you to see? That would give you more of a guarantee on both dogs. Hopefully the neighbor would be willing to let you meet the pug dad, and talk to them about the temperament of him.

I honestly am not familiar with Brittany's at all, but do know about getting suckered by cute dogs! You just can't say no =)

Mog
half man, half dog. he's his own best friend!

A word of advice on pugs, they also are a VERY hyper breed. Pugs are also high maintenance. Of course Puggle's (a pug/beagle mix) tend to popular and very cute as it gives the best of both worlds. Just please consider your options before getting a dog.

Brittany owner here.
most of the time she is like this:

other times, she's like this...all up in your face:

I can NOT imagine a Brittany/pug mix. I just don't see it.

Jazz (our Brit) is pretty hyper...she's 5 and still thinks she's a pup. She gets super exicted when people come over...but eventually calms down after the 'greetings'. However, when she wants something...she will cry non-stop. (we so spoil her).

I just knew I had seen someones sig with a Brittany spaniel!

DAX... don't worry I am not and will not rush into any pet choices!

I would not get a pug from an inexperienced breeder. Pugs are high maintenance to begin with and if they don't come from good lineage you get a boatload of health problems. My little guy was champion sired and he has allergies. My big guy is a rescue, probably came from a puppy mill, he was given up because the previous owners couldn't deal with him and his health problems anymore. Two months after he came home he had knee surgery. The surgeon told me his cartiledge was practically completely worn away. This knee problem is very common and is hereditary. Good breeders will not use any dog with this type of knee problem. They breed to better the breed, not make money. There is a reason there are so many pugs in pug rescue.

Excuse me now while I step off my soap box...

My 3 yr old pug has no health issues, and is not hipper at all.we found her breeder on the innernet if you do a search on breeders you will find some great ones with references, probably some with puppies already to go and close to home, good luck if you do decide to go with a pug, they make great pets, nice size, nice temperment and lots of personality, unless we just got lucky!

Puggymom, you hit the nail on the head. I would just like to add... every breed has it's problems... genetically and or tempermant wise. Any mix (as stated earlier) can get the best of both breeds or the WORST of both breeds. The worst part is... you generally don't know what you've got until you've gotten the puppy home and fallen in love.
I can't suggest www.petfinder.com enough. You can rescue every breed at just about every age (yes, there are even purebred puppies on there - on a regular basis.) And, if you go through rescue... the rescue workers will be able to help guide you in the right direction and help make you aware of each dog's characteristic.

Petfinder is where I found my rescue. That's what is wonderful about going through a rescue org, they will match the dog to you and your lifestyle, etc. A good breeder will do the same, they know their puppies and can tell how there personalities are developing. My brother just drove up to Rochester NY from central NJ to get his dog and the breeder picked out the dog for him based on what my brother told him. He has 3 kids (4 -12) and the breeder picked out a puppy that would suit that type of family. The breeder I got my baby from waited until the pups were 10 weeks old before letting prospective buyers meet them. This way the breeder could see the interaction. Then I couldn't being him home until he was 14 weeks.
