Hi. Baxter keeps getting a hot spot on his neck under where his collar lies. It's a nylon type collar. I'm wondering if there is a better material collar to use on him? I'm assuming leather would be just as bad as nylon. Don't really want to use a choke/training collar. Anyone have any suggestions? Thx.

Is this a collar he wears 24/7 for ID purposes as well as for walks? I'd probably try taking it off at least at night until his hot spot heals. Is he chipped?

Warning: Choke/training collars should never be left on a dog unless you are actually working with him. He could easily strangle. They are not meant to carry I.D. or tags.

A soft leather (or rolled leather) buckle collar may breathe better and chafe less than nylon. It would be worth a try.

Another option is a fabric martingale. Martingale collars are especially designed for greyhounds, but other breeds wear them too. If you google martingale collars you will see that they come in gorgeous fabrics and colors from many different makers, but again these should not be left on 24/7 and are not used when your dog is crated.

FWIW, my pampered pooches wear satin-lined grossgrain tag-free "house collars" with my phone # and address on them 24/7. On walks they also wear fabric martingale collars with their tags attached to the side buckle (not to the D ring where you clip the leash). We get them from 2hounds Designs. They are certanly not cheap :scared1:, but they wear like iron, are washable and beautiful, and we only have to replace them every 2-3 years.

Nylon is very harsh since it is a plastic petroleum product. No breathability.

I would try out the PP posters suggestions. The satin lined collar sounds really nice.

My dogs have leather and it weathers over time and is very comfortable for them.

Looked up your site, PP. Wow, silk asian collars? Really nice. Oh and the velvet leashes? Awesome. Might have to look into getting my Gracie a Christmas present.

I use a soft leather collar that is lined with satin as a "all day"collar, for walking and training purposes a "Halti" is a must - my pup is 6 months old and dragged my wife around on walks - within 2 minutes with a Halti - no problmes again

Yes, those Asian silk collars are really lovely. My girl has the dragon design. :) Here is the direct link: http://www.2houndsdesign.com/ (no affiliation, just a very satisfied customer.)

I forgot to say, that another option for walks is a harness. We used the no-pull harness from Wiggles Wags and Whiskers for our late hound who had laryngeal paralysis and couldn't have any pressure on his neck. It is made from velvet and heavy-weight grossgrain. Most pet stores carry nylon harnesses but those might also cause Baxter problems.

Haltis or Gentle Leaders for dogs that pull are very good, but some dogs need a while to get used to them.

My pups use Spiffy dog air collars, they have a wonderful mesh like material that prevents them from being too heavy and cause uncomfortable rubbing on their skin. Our favorite thing about them is that dry very quickly which is a necessity for my water-addicted dogs. Here's the site: http://www.spiffydog.com/home.php

They also have really cute designs and colors! :)

We switched to a leather collar for our dog because she kept getting hot spots too and we haven't had a problem with that since. We use a harness for walks so her collar is really there just to hold her dog tags.

Our dog had the same problem, our solution was simply to remove the collar unless he was being walked. Our dogs are chipped so if either of them got out or anything they would be returned to us easily. Removing the collar did the trick, neither dog has any type of issues anymore. :)
