Ive been lurking here for many years and tend to hang out on the cruise forum, but there are so many pet owners on here, I thought this would be a good place to ask this.

I came home this morning and found a torn box of splenda and a 1 year old golden retriever (with a history of a "lead stomach") with a white, powdery nose. He obviously got into the spenda box. I have no idea how much he ate or how much was in the box. Should I be worried? What problem should I be on the lookout for?

Any reassurance or advice would be greatly appreciated. TIA!

I'd call the Vet ASAP.

They're my first resource when Rink eats something silly.

The 'runs' is what you should look out for.

What size box? If five pounds, call the vet. If 8 ounces or whatever, he would probably be alright. Really, dogs can eat dead, yucky things, so I imagine Splenda won't do him in.

It was a 2 lb box, and I think it was at least half empty. Alot of it was left on the floor. He must not have liked it.:lmao:

Thank you for the reassurances. I also emailed my friend who is a vet tech and am waiting to hear back from her. I will watch him for the runs and any other symptoms. He has a lead stomach - he got into the Easter candy with no ill affects (except for two upset daughters).

Thanks again. Everyone is always so helpful here.

I think the sweetener that dogs have to avoid is zylo-something. What is in Splenda besides sugar?

If you think your dog just ate is recently, you can "force feed" him about a tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide and take him outside to barf. We had to do that when one of our guys ate a dark chocolate raspberry treat.
