Dog at resort. Did I do the right thing?

you did the right thing, i understand that people love their pets, but people need to realize that everyone is not a pet person, they have hotels that allow people to bring their pets, if they are not allowed the rules should not be broken, i would have done the same thing

I don't think you did the wrong thing. I think I, myself, would have probably looked and taken notice and said nothing unless I was run over by this dog or he tried to hurt my daughter. However, as a person who suffers from allergies and asthma, I think that letting the front desk know was a good thing. I would never bring my little Aslan (Pomeranian) to a place as such, therefore I would expect others to abide by those rules.

I am a mommy to two dogs whom I adore. I would never take them to a place that didn't accept pets, nor would I ever leave them locked up in a hotel room all day long. That being said, unless the dog was actually disturbing you in some way, the only reason you had for calling and tattle-taling on these people was that you are a busy body. You're like the neighbors who have nothing better to do than to watch out the window to see what other people are doing all day, then calling everyone else you know to gossip about it. Then you come on these boards and bring it up to everyone because your conscience is bothering you, and you want everyone to tell you what a wonderful person you are and that you really had no choice. If you saw someone stealing, or beating someone up or something, then you would have had a good reason to get involved. Otherwise, you're just taking pleasure out of causing trouble for other people. I'm sure this will make me unpopular, but that's how I feel.

I personally would not have been so quick without seeing if this was an ongoing situation. Have some tolerance for others and understanding. As someoone said, maybe they were visiting or about to check out and just had the dog with them to go in and out (you did state you didn't see the family again). This is not ideal for people with allergies I realize but neither are alot of things. I am very bothered by smoke..yet people seem to feel when they smoke on the hotel balcony or entrance to the hotel or in front of my open window that they aren't doing anything wrong because there are no rules about smoking outside. Sometimes walking into the hotel through the clouds from inconsiderate smokers is enough to make my eyes water.

Smoking is not differant, if it says no smoking then there is no room for people to make their own rules. I just don't understand how people stick up and cry tolerance when the policy at this particular place is no dogs

Absolutley. There is NO room for tolerance when a human beings health and well being are at stake, whether it is from cigarette smoke, or the fear of an animal attack or a severe allergic reaction to an animal.

There is always room for tolerance!! I can't believe anyone would say that. I would never bring a dog to hotel but all that happened was someone exited a room with a dog..no barking, no problems, nothing.

No one knows what someone else has going on. Obviously notsohappylawyer has no tolerance for rule breaking no matter what the situation. I once parked in a no parking zone at a hospital because my DD2 was choking and couldn't breathe and I was alone to carry her in and bring my 6 year old too in the middle of the night. But I guess I broke a rule..shame on me

Bad form! Don't jump the gun so fast. From where I am standing it looks like the pot calling the kettle black! We come here to sound off to one another. We are an OHANA (family for those who don't know) and as ohana we reserve the right to voice to each other. Please remember this when reading and post in the future.

Well actually it is not 8 pages about a dog, it is 8 pages about rules, who abides by them and who tweaks them to fit their own preferences.

And a life threatening situation involving a child is not the same thing and it insults our intelligence if you think we don't know the difference.

Again if the dog had a legitimate reason for being there then mentioning it caused no harm. If they did not have a legitimate reason, then mentioning it brought it to the attention of management and they dealt with it.

While I understand some would have simply looked the other way and let it go, why does it bother some that the OP chose to report it.

It really seems to bother some on these forums that some of us believe that rules are made for a reason and that we abide by them.

If you truly are the type that sees no reason to bother about the dog, then why bother about the person that reported the dog. Seems a contridiction to me.

All I am saying is before I would complain about a dog in the next room I would make sure there was one! I don't fault someone for complaining but at the point the OP complained all she knew for sure was there WASN'T a dog in the next room. I don't like to complain unless I am sure there is a problem.

And my point on smoking wasn't regarding people who smoke where it isn't permitted..my point is anyone can smoke outside and this is a problem for people with severe allergies and they aren't breaking the rules.

The OP said "out of the room walks an old fat Blue Heeler". To me that means the dog was in the room. She called the front desk to let them know there was a dog in the room next door. No problem there. If the manager was aware of the dog for some reason, fine. If not, he knew then. Rules are rules. This wasn't an emergency dog who could perform CPR.

Dogs in rooms? Add that to threads on resort mugs and pool hopping. When we return to AKL next year I'm going to take my dog, walk him to the Mara to refill an old POFQ mug, and then go over to the Beach Club for a swim, my dog prefers the sandy bottom. aw:

Yes you did the right thing. We stayed at our timeshare once and the first day DH and DS had little itchy bites on them. We got our room changed and maintanence told us they allowed guests with a dog to stay in the room last week. Of course we complained and ended up getting a free week. But the point is no pets allowed means no pets allowed. Sneaking in pets is incredibly rude to do esp when others can have severe allergies, asthmas etc. There are hotels that allow pets so people who have to bring their dogs can stay there. I always check to see if our hotel willl be pet free.
