Doesn't Room-Ready & Requests Contradict?

I know there is a lot of discussion on the room-ready policy & the ability to make requests...and I guess it simply isn't clear to me.

When are the "requests" applied? Wouldn't you assume that if it is room-ready, your requests only apply at time of check-in...and at that point wouldn't it be easier just to verbally ask if you have anything available/ready in xyz location?

Why bog down the reservation & MS phone lines with the room requests if the rooms are actually assigned upon arrival?

Am I missing something?

Supposedly, the CM doesn't have to engage in a conversation with you about what you'd like in a room, especially if there's a line of families checking in. The CM can simply look at your requests, look at what's available in inventory, and *ping!* make an assignment. (Or, if no rooms meet your requests, *gronk!* make an assignment.)

And basically, it still often depends upon who checks you in and their "mood" of the day ~
My daughter just checked into SSR a few hours ago. They'd stayed at the resort 2 weeks ago and got a great room ~ they loved the section, the view.... So today when checking in she asked for 'approximately' the same area. The CM had already remarked about how there were 'lots of rooms available'. She did note though that the CM wasn't really very pleasant.
So, they get their room # and go up to the room. Not even close to what she'd asked for!! So, she calls down to the desk and speaks to another CM (she knew it was for sure a different one since this one was male) ~
He looks up the inventory and sure enough, there's a room more like what she was requesting.
Funny thing though ~ when she goes back to the front desk to change rooms she gets the same woman CM as the first time!! who seems to be confused that she's changing rooms ~ she looks at the room # and says "That's a great room - why would you want to change?" My DD explains nicely that that's not their original room and they are changing TO that room. CM doesn't seem to recognize her from 1/2 an hour before.
One of the managers steps over and quickly takes care of the change.

Anyway, the point I'm making is that you really should make your requests known at check in ~ kind of just review them for the CM & ask politely if they were able to grant them for you.
If the room isn't to your liking when you see it, do see if they may be able to change it for you. Depending upon the time of year and occupancy at the resort during your stay, there's a good chance they may be able to do that.
But, make sure to be pleasant to the CMs ~~~ it's strictly up to them at that point whether or not to get you a "good" room

Either way would be fine and functional if they were applied consistently and appropriately. However neither are the case most of the time.

I guess that is the answer to my question. Considering that the ultimate fate of my room location rests in the hands of the person that greets me at the counter that day, I'd think I would be better off not listing any prefrences (except non-smoking). And just nicely & polietly asking if xyorz were available at check in.

Also the earlier in the day you check-in, the better. Although 'your' room may not be available at that time, they can assign it to you then for later check-in.

I know they say 4p...my dilemma is to check in early (10am) or late (7p)?

Whenever teh computers are through changing over. Usually 5-6 am or so. But you likely will not get your room till later, maybe MUCH later. A friend just went and checked in like 10 AM and got her room at 7:30 PM.

1) You cannot check-in prior to 6:01am, or you pay an extra day.
2) Beyond that, you can check-in anytime before or after 4:00pm.
3) The room is supposed to be ready by 4:00pm, but not guaranteed.

*Ping!* vs *Gronk!* too funny. Fortunately, mine have mostly been *Ping!* with only our first visit home coming in at a big bad *Gronk!*

So with the room ready policy, has any one actually been able to get their room early? We have had several trips since the new policy and have not been able to get our room to 4 or after. Also, even if you are assigned your room early in the day but not given the number until later, can't a cast member easily swap your room for a guest that is standing in front of them to meet their requests, then yours is no longer met?

When we moved from OKW to SSR last year we were given the option of several rooms and they were all ready at that time in the morning. We were not overly concerned about view etc. so maybe that helped. We ended up in CP overlooking the bus stop and quite a bit of the resort. My only requests were non smoking and near a pool. Both were met. The bus stop was in front of the villa and the CP quiet pool at the back of the building. We have also gotten our villas early at OKW a couple of times and were able to pick from several units. They were not the ones most people mention so maybe that is part of it. If you are flexible you may get your room early.
