Doesn't MS ALWAYS use banked points first?!

In another thread I read the recommendation "Be sure to tell MS to use your banked points first."

I guess it couldn't hurt, but don't they always do this? What possible reason would there be for using current UY points first and leaving banked points unused?

ms has turn over like any business - if you are unlucky and get a new person - they might not understand banking and borrowing well enough to know to use the bank points first.

DVC is a very complex plan - it is hard enough for members to understand it - all of MS is surpose to understand - but hey - new is new.

I always tell them to use the bank points first - hey one was so new - she didn't know where to look for the bank points - so I had to point those out....

DVC is a business.

never assume always ask - and vertify - that there points after agree with yours.

That woud be logical but maybe it's just to make sure they don't overlook it. I know I had a trip booked last June and it had some of my banked points used but not all of them. I didn't understand it or try to figure it out with MS, just glad I caught it and they straightened it out 3 days before leaving for the trip. They actually had to cancel the ressie(frightening) and then put notes back in the computer that my original ressie was made 11 mo prior so that my request wouldn't get overlooked. Kind of like asking for a clean glass at a dive:D , it should be a given but you might want to reiterate it;) .

I had the same thing happen with BORROWED points. Had to borrow some for a trip in June 04. Then I realized that since borrowed points had some "restrictions" it would make sense to use them on the earlier March 04 trip just in case the later trip fell through. Member Services agreed with this and also had to "cancel" my reservation then re-book it using the borrowed points. It gets confusing! I don't know how the people with numerous contracts keep it all straight!

"Doesn't MS ALWAYS use banked points first?! "

Unfortunately not. We found this out after trying to bank our remaining points this year, when we were told "you can't bank 58 of them because they were banked from last year"

Oh well, you live and learn ... just means another short trip before the end of march. ;)

David :D

When I call MS, I always review my contracts and points balance along with borrowed/banked status so that the CM and I are on the same wavelength and then I discuss my plans. Referring back to the intial information jointly always helps the CM to book the ressies as efficiently as possible

thanks

It depends. Hope I can get this straight. If you have, let's say, three trips planned this year. One in May another in June and the third in Oct. May and Aug are on current points and Oct is on banked points (you made the Oct trip reservations first with banked points).

You cancel the Oct trip and have already stayed in May. The banked points will cover the June trip and part of Aug's.

Aug's current points can be replaced with the banked points. The banked points cannot replace any of the current points for May.

This is because you have already used the current points for May. You can replace the Aug current points with banked points because They are not considered used until you check.

You have to use the balance of the unused banked points on a new reservation or lose them.

To be on the safe side, tell them what points you want used first

I do the same thing jaysue does, reviewing the status of all my contracts and all my points before going on to the business that I need to conduct. There are some reasons for not using banked points--I am selling an add-on later this winter, so I want all those points left alone, which means that a trip next summer will need to use borrowed points instead. A new person insisted that I could not make a ressie unless I used banked points--I asked for her supervisor, and quickly cleared up her misconception. You can also have an experienced MS do a manual adjustment on the points to get them the way you want them, they just need to know that it can be done.

I always tell them exactly which points, how many in each use year will be left, etc; leaving nothing to chance. MS is pretty good and using any banked or borrowed points first if they are sitting there but you should tell them anyway. THEY WILL NOT AUTOMATICALLY SUBSTITUTE BANKED OR BORROWED POINTS FOR CURRENT POINTS IF THE BANKED/BORROWED POINTS SHOW UP IN YOUR ACCOUNT LATER.

i have a question: feb. 2003 i banked my 2002 points(my use year is sept) in aug 2003 we made a trip to the bcv, and i asked the ms to use my 2002 banked points, ms said no, i had to borrow my 2003 points, was ms right?

wdwstar: Yes MS was correct. Once points are banked, they can not be placed back in the original use year. So when you banked your 2002 (9/1/02-8/31/03) points into 2003 (9/1/03-8/31/04), you could not then use them for a trip that began before your use year of Sept 2003.

August 2003 is still within you're 2002 use year, MS was correct. You shouldn't have banked the points and you would not have had to borrow.
