Isn't tonight the first night of Hanukkah?? It is early this year.. I see nothing online or Tv about it at all???

Happy Hanukkah!!!

Since the Jewish calendar doesn't line up with the Julian calendar, dates aren't the same every year. According to Wikipedia, these are the start dates for the next ten years:

December 1, 2010
December 20, 2011
December 8, 2012
November 27, 2013
December 16, 2014
December 6, 2015
December 24, 2016
December 12, 2017
December 2, 2018
December 22, 2019
December 10, 2020

Yes, it starts tonight at sundown and goes through the 8th.

The Hebrew Calendar bounces around depending on whether it's a year that the extra month has been added.

Yep, the played the Adam Sandler song on the radio this morning! ;)

It does....and i need to get wrapping...i've never been this far behind! oy!!!

OMG....in 2013 we will have Chanukah and Thanksgiving at the same time. I can't remember that happening before (even though I am sure that it has). I guess no mashed potatoes that year.... Latkes instead.

Makes shopping that much harder .

So, December 9 is when I can go into stores this year and start complaining about them discriminating against the Jewish religion by NOT putting Hannukah merchandise on clearance after the holiday is over? Cool.

My bff is jewish so we celebrate with her, but I personally like when it is earlier because you can still get the "hot" toys before all of the crazy christmas shoppers hit the stores!

As phineas and ferb say...Shake your Dreiedel-racas!

You have an extra month?

It doesn't go by the full moon and the solstice, or something like that, which happens with Passover, the full moon and the equinox?

Regardless, Happy Chanukkah!

Think of it as leap month!! :)

• Based on moon cycles instead of sun cycles
• "Leap months" are added to sync up with sun cycles
• Used to be calculated by observation
• Calculated mathematically since 4th century
• Years are numbered from Creation

It's not so much to sync up with "sun cycles" as it is to sync up with the seasons. Sukkot, for example, is a harvest festival, so it must occur in the fall. Pesach (Passover) is a planting festival and a celebration of the end of winter, so it must occur in the spring, and so on. If we didn't add a leap month, we could be celebrating Passover now! (The Muslim lunar calendar does not add a month and does not coordinate its holidays with the seasons. That's why Ramadan this year was in September, but a few years ago occurred around Christmas.)

And just to add to the information, the reason that Jewish days all begin at sundown can be found in the book of Genesis. The story of creation says, "And it was evening and it was morning, the first day." Since evening came first, the day starts in the eveing.

This is also, by the way, the origin of the celebrations of Christmas Eve and New Years Eve. Otherwise the "eve" of a holiday would have no meaning.

Happy Chanukah to all!
