Not sure. Never heard of it? :confused3

not like that... but DH works 4 ten hour days and is off three... same pay, but from the employer, not unemployment

They do this in Ma to try and help to keep a company for having to do any lay offs.

i'de be concerned that employers would do this and reduce employee hours down to where they did'nt meet the qualifications for benefits or retirement contributions.

my other concern would be by virtue of reducing one's pay and collecting unemployment one is reducing the salary upon which future unemployment benefits will be based on so in the event of total job loss they would be eligible for potentialy 20% less than their previous full time salary would have entitled the to (and i'm curious how it works if someone is collecting uib but working-are they contributing such that if the job totaly goes away in the future even if they've used their max number of weeks up they can establish a new claim?).

we had a vto program where i worked (voluntary time off). you could volunteer to reduce your work time/job duties in exchange for reduced salary (so when i went to 80% time my salary reduced to 80%) BUT you retained full employee benefits/leave time/retirement contributions (u.i.b. was'nt an issue for me because i had researched it and even with the reduction my salary was such that i could have cut my hours to 40% and gotten the same max amount for my state).

Yep. My husband is on it right now. They closed his shop for 2 weeks during the holidays, and are on 4 day weeks until the beginning of march.

They have guide lines they must follow. We still keep all our benfits. That is part of the rules. Also this does not effect us if in the end they choose to do a lay off. If they do a lay off after the 12 weeks we would not loose any unemployment benefits.

Do they get to collect for the fifth day also?

I've never heard of that. I can't imagine them doing anything like that here in Texas.

At my company, we have the option of taking off every other Friday with pay. To do that, we have to work 9 hours a day every M-Thu.

Go to your UI website, it says it will reduce the amount of money you will recieve if you are laid off.

NY state does ! My Dh's company just cancelled last nights regular shift and won't let workers take any personal or vac time to make up .. so now is paycheck is 12 hours short:eek: . So he went to talk to his supervisor and told him that will be his waiting period for shared unemployment. His supervisor had no clue what it was ; the company was owned by different people last time they did it. My husband works in the printing industry which is always slow after XMAS but with this economy I fear this may be it! Last time in 2006 he got 1 day of a shared unemployment, just long enough to be a pain at tax time!:rolleyes2

It says it does but it does not. We did this before and it had no effect on anything.

yeah that stinks. But I know I have them take the taxes out now.
Do you also the extra for kids?

At my last job a few years back we did this. We worked 4 days and unemployment paid for 1/2 of the 5th day.

Just this Friday my hours got cut to 32 a week. They didn't say anything about work sharing, but we get to keep all our benefits.

If this going to be long term I will have them take out the taxes. Last time he took regular unemployment he received 5 weeks and I don't think we had taxes taken out; if it is small amount of money I don't worry about the taxes not being taken out. I am self employed so we will be fine just need reprioritize a little! One thing I like about unemployment is in NY your child support is automatically taken out just like it was in his paycheck. I don't ever want to get behind in child support for the step kiddos!:)
