Does your religion speak about purgatory or limbo or anything like that?
I was raised Methodist and had never given it much thought til I converted to Catholicism and hear about it weekly now at mass.
Thoughts?-:confused3

No, I don't have a religion. As far as I'm concerned the dead are dead. The idea of any kind of afterlife not only doesn't computer with me but scares the heck out of me :scared1:

Mine does, but it confuses me about why...I'm a Christian, and I believe in a judgment day and Heaven and Hell, but if your actions in life determine your eternity, why do you need an "in-between" (Paradise or Hades) - nothing's going to change???

Didn't you know the beliefs of the Catholic faith before you converted??
Personally, I do not believe in pergatory - only in heaven and hell.

Do you think it is used as some sort of time of atonement or punishment? I still don't know if I buy it or not, but sometimes in real life it seems times come and go of limbo also, don't you think?

Yes, I knew, doens't necessarily mean I buy it though. I guess I must be a cafeteria type.

I'm Southern Baptist. No purgatory or limbo, just heaven or hell.

They're just intellectual constructs that don't make a whole lot of sense made up by men to explain other things that didn't make a whole lot of sense, so it just gets more nonsensical the more layers you add to it.

I also am Christian. I beleive that when judgment day comes, you will be taken to Heaven if you are a believer of Christ. Those Who choose not to will be sent to the firery lake.
I will not pretend to understand all of the side questions that come out of this subject, but by faith and my trust in God and his word in the Bible.
I also, firmly, beleive that our actions do not get us to heaven, but our faith and trust in accepting Christ into our lives gives us entry by his grace and forgivness.

Some Jews believe in a place of temporary purification that lasts about 12 months..There's no Hell in Judaism and no real "set in stone" rule about heaven.

I understand... I do not think you will find too many people who 100% agree with their "religion of choice"
I grew up Lutheran and changed to United Methodist as an adult. It is much closer to my personal belief system.

catholic here - only heaven and hell - yes, i think we phased out limbo in the mid 70s (along with meat on fridays  )

I am Catholic. Limbo, btw, no longer exists as a state of being according to the Church. Purgatory does exist, but honestly I have not heard it mentioned at Mass in years. Sounds like you have a very old-school pastor.

I thought the same thing too. I haven't heard the word purgatory in mass for as long as I can remember. He must be old-old school.

Limbo-not. Purgatory-Bibically based on the book of Maccabees ( I think) in which they speak of praying for the dead. IE, if there is only Heaven and Hell, no prayers would be needed for the souls of the dead, in that if they were in HEaven, fine as wine, if they were in Hell, no chance to save them or comfort them.

Also, based on the thought that nothing soiled/impure could be in the presence of God, so if you die with sin on your soul---no confession before death or no having asked forgiveness for your sins prior to death, then something needed to remove the stain of sin from your sould prior to meeting God.

Also, no teaching as to how long souls are to be in Purgatory, could be days, year or could only be mere seconds or minutes.

Nope... no limbo, purgatory, or anything like that in my religion.

This is one of the things that insure that I would never convert to Catholocism.
