Does your house smell like garbage water today?

I've never lived anywhere besides the SW PA/Ohio region so the garbage smell is totally normal to me even if I don't exactly enjoy the lingering gross smell. Today, nearly every house in SW PA smells like rank old garbage water from the traditional New Year's Day kielbasa and sauerkraut dinners--with bonus smells from the fried pierogies and onions that some of us prepare with it, and I steamed broccoli too so add that lovely smell

I'm sitting her basking in the odors and it made me wonder if other regions of the US or other countries sat down to traditional meals today and what those meals are? I bet southwestern PA's tradition is the stinkiest!

I don’t know anyone who has a specific traditional meal on New Years Day in the Toronto area. So thankfully, no garbage water smell around me. Lol.

Oh that smell! I grew up in DE where we do black eyed peas as a soup. Interesting smell, but not like pork and sauerkraut. We live in PA dutch country now (where the hubby grew up) and fortunately my mother-in-law cooks it at her house

no.....all houses around here smell like rain water. It's been raining all day.
We don't have that kind of smell from cooking....no traditional meals.

I don't blame her, it's gross, I don't like sauerkraut--to eat it or smell it! But it's tradition and I only have to put up with it one day a year so I do

I grew up in Ohio and lived in SW PA for 35 years. Irish, so thankfully none of that food for us! I had never even heard of pierogi until moving to SW PA but we didn't eat it either. (I don't like corned beef and cabbage also)

We ordered pizza on New Year's Eve. Last night's dinner was steak for DH and salmon for me. We don't really have any traditions when it comes to food. We just eat whatever sounds good at the time!

Growing up, Mama always made black eyed peas, cornbread, cabbage, and greens (usually mustard or turnip. ) If I remember and made the effort, I'll try to have cabbage and black eyed peas.....unfortunately for my health and wealth for 2023, I made neither yesterday. Hopefully won't come back to haunt me this year.
