Does Your Family Have DVR Wars?

I'm noticing this has been a trend in my family since school has ended...
My shows scheduled to DVR are mysteriously being erased...
I think DH is cancelling them for Deadlist Catch, which in turn are being erased (by DD) for I Carly, Sunny With A Chance, which in turn are being
erased (by DS) for House and Discovery Channel stuff.

...and it seems that the DVR is always 100% full.
Grrr!
We're going to have to set this straight!

Our DVR controls two tv's. The default is to our tv in the basement but when two shows are on at the same time, it bounces the second one to our family room. If things that are being recorded are "important", we will usually watch something already on the DVR. The exception of course is if DH is home and the Cubs are off. Then all bets are off. Most of the shows cable and are usually repeated later over night so I will cancel it and set it to record while we're sleeping.

Our DVR does show when it was canceled and which tv it was canceled from.

I just started watching Deadliest Catch over Memorial Day weekend and no else gets it but me.

My DD even said "I thought that Dad only watched fishing shows".

Nope. But then it's just me and my dad. My dad never uses it. He's the type that if he wants to watch something, he wants to watch it right then, not later.

We would, but DH is smart and got us 2 DVR's! One is his and one is mine. He has a man cave upstairs where he watches, and I use the TV downstairs. The kids have to ask if they want to record something and then we figure out who's DVR won't be recording during that time! We very rarely watch anything "live" anymore.

Occasionally we will even negotiate with each other to record things if there are 2 things on at the same time, like DH asked if he could record a car race this last weekend because there were 2 on at the same time that he wanted to watch. He says that having 2 is the best money ever spent!

We do at our house but thank goodness, my shows are usually playing again in the middle of the night like The Next Food Network Star and Real Housewives of New Jersey so that I can record them then when everybody is asleep.

Nope we solved that issue before it became a problem.

DS14 has directv in his room. If there is a show only he wants to watch, he goes to his room to watch it. Nothing stands between the boy and his Prime Evil on Saturday nights.

If DD12 wants to watch, yet another different show, she get to: during the day watch in the living room or at night go into my bedroom and watch. We will soon be adding a receiver in her room, just so she can be in her own little ol' world.

If there are multipule shows that we want to record, anything that is on a cable channel - Top Chef, Deadliest Catch, Burn Notice, SoA - we usually don't tape the first showing, it's almost always the 2nd showing, which is usually on 2 hours after the 1st showing. All shows we dvr on the major channels, get presidence over cable shows.

Both kids know that if there is something special they want recorded, they HAVE to ask before messing with the settings.

SSshhhhh! I secretly deleted DD9's Hannah Montana timers today. Seriously, how many did she NEED? Just recently DD9 had every episode of Jon and Kate plus eight. Somehow they have recently disappeared.

I swear out of all the technology in the house, if I could only save one, it would be the DVR. We have a dual one with 200 hours, and yet the two of us (DS and myself) always seem to have it almost full. The only problem we have is when DH is home alone and it's taping two programs at the same time, and he can't figure out how to watch live tv (um, walk to the bedroom and watch the stand alone tv w/receiver). The only thing I wish I could do is teach it to prioritze taping multiple showing items in the middle of the night. I have to "force" it, to make room for SYTYCD!

We're moving on Saturday and I'M PERSONALLY ENDING THE DVR WARS!!

I called Comcast and asked how much for another DVR (in my bedroom). $14.99! It's well worth it!!!

I was out of work for 5 months and during that time I had a lot of shows I got used to watching. Now I DVR them and watch them on weekends. Not to mention the fact that I have no time to watch them at night! Having a 16 yo who not only DVRs lots of shows but saves them on DVD is a nightmare. He wants entire seasons of shows and saves them for months!!! I can't complain TOO much because he does that for my shows, too! He just finished Lost!

No thank goodness. Kids don't watch TV so it is me and DH. We can record/watch up to 4 shows at once.

That is where having a master receiver comes in handy.

omg...we have 2, but it seems like the kids feel the need to record on the main tv!! Drives me crazy when I can't watch tv because Hannah Montana and something else stupid are recording at the same time.

We don't have wars.....we do have "summits" though to discuss and come up with a solution to what gets recorded. Usually we can find a repeat of certain shows being shown later in the night or early morning. Or if its a reality show vs another show, the reality show gets taped. The other will be taped when its rerun. I try to play peace keeper and will go through and find if there will be conflicts and get them taken care of before a war erupts.

The middle of the night option works wonders with some shows (Doctor Who via Sci-Fi and most anything from BBC America, thank goodness for loops!).

I had more of a problem with getting my recorded movies deleted before I could capture them to DVD. That is, until I discovered that I could protect them and make it impossible to delete without my password!

Now, we do still have the occasional discussion on just how many times can you record and watch the same old episodes of Law and Order (his obsession) and why on earth do you need to record HGTV's Extreme Halloween or every Travel Chanell program with any mention of disney World (yep, that would be me).

My mom pretty much has full control over the DVR. And she rarely erases things after watching them. When she went out of town a few weeks ago, I kept having to erase old episodes for her so her new episodes would record.
I only record one show, and I delete it.

No wars here, we have three Comcast DVR's. One for the kids, one for Mom and one for Dad.
