Does this make you mad?

My DS6 had his tonsills and adenoids out in the beginning of July. His ENT Dr. said that if he started to get a runny nose, sore throat etc. to call him and not his regular Dr. Well DS has had a horrible runny nose for about a week, brown sometimes, bloody this morning and hes been hoarse. So I call the office and she says she'll call me after she talks to the doc.

He has called him in a prescription for an antibiotic and some nose spray and he hasn't even checked him out. I don't know about you but I really don't like giving my kids antibiotics unless it is absolutely necessary. I said what did he say was wrong with him and she said he didn't say. Should I just call his pediatrician and have him look at him?

I think antibiotics are way overperscribed.

I hate when my doc gives them to me, without really checking me out. (I've had at least 2 docs just call in perscriptions for me without even seeing me) and I think it's even worse for children.

Well ... since the doctor in question had told you to look out for runny nose, sore throat, etc., it seems as though these are probably common side effects that happen fairly regularly. So ... when you called to relate these symptoms, the doc prescribed what is normal for this type of thing.

If the doc hadn't said to call him if you saw those symptoms, then that's one thing. But I'm thinking that a lot of kids who have that operation suffer the same after-effects, and so when yours did, the doc prescribed what he normally prescribes.

If you don't want to give antibiotics, then just call back, say you'd prefer to go a non-drug route, and ask what else you can do to make your son feel better. That weeklong runny nose is probably making him miserable!
