I don't think it's weird to wipe down things (tables, cart handles, etc), I do it myself sometimes and my child doesn't have medical conditions but I do think it's weird to disinfect people even if they are in costumes. :teeth:
I agree. I always wipe down highchairs. Alot of them are plain gross. And when the kids were younger, I had that cloth cover that went right into the grocery carts.
I used to be good friends with someone who had a child with multiple severe allergies. Mom was very aware and never put that child in a situation for a reaction. But even with all the precautions, the child still usually had some sort of allergic reaction once a week from something. This friend of mine also ALWAYS carried an epi pen. It can happen with anything. A child ate a sandwich, didn't wash his hands than ran onto Dumbo. Allergies or not, I just feel you can't guard your child from everything. You would have to wipe down everything the child came in contact with. Barring a severe medical condition, I stick with my original comment, its plain weird.

I will tell you what it does show...a complete and total ignorance of what carries germs and/or any other "problem" germ or exposure you care to mention.

Cleaning a character's nose, which represents less than 1% of its total area of exposure is not only foolish but a huge waste of time. What about the rest of the fuzzy, germ carrying costume. And peanut allergy? What would that have to do with the nose for crying out loud. Get a grip! The world is full of germs, air borne or other wise. Our immune system is activated by exposure to these things thus creating antibodies to fight them. Without exposure we have no immune system.

If you have a child with serious problems and life threatening allergies then it is YOUR responsibility to be sure that your child is not in harms way...not everyone else's. I understand why a parent would want to bring a child with such problems to a place like WDW but to put that child at such a risk just to "mainstream" them is irresponsible and self centered.

Veering slightly, but not off topic, children with peanut allergies, of a severe nature, forced by his or her parents to go to regular school classrooms, filled with kids that, primarily, live off peanut butter is folly. Asking all other parents to be sure that their child doesn't eat peanuts or peanut related products is asking way to much of everyone. One accidental slip up by a parent and it could cause severe injury or death to that child. That is a bit too much transfer of responsibility to sit well with me.

Keep your children out of harms way...do not expect everyone else to change everything to accommodate your problems. It is just too risky!

I have to say I have seen alot of wierd things happen at WDW, but never someone wiping down a characters nose. If that behaviour threatened at character in anyway, I can garuntee that a CM would have spoken on the side to the person to stop. Since this continued with each character, I'd say in this case, it must have been ok.

Well said! I guess like someone else mentioned now I've heard all!

while vacationing last week in the world, i was witness to something i have never seen before....being a somewhat "germ-phobe" even i was kind of taken aback by this....in chef mickeys, i saw a father wiping every characters nose off with a clorox wipe before his son ( 3 or 4 y.o.) would hug & kiss them.....this was a 1st for me...i dunno, is this sort of thing normal? does everyone do this? i can only imagine what the character person inside was thinking!

That's a first for me but it's a good idea. Did the characters mind or were they in shock? ha

It never occured to me before that others might think I'm a weird insane germ-phobe when I wipe down the tables at restuarants, grocery carts, the seats on the airplane, etc. If I don't, my son could get peanut residue on his food or hands (that stuff is sticky and *everywhere*) and he could die from it. Of course, I don't really care what others think about me because it is about my son's health and safety. And staying out of public, not taking my son to places like Disney, never going to a restaurant, etc. is not an option. My son deserves a normal childhood and I can give him one by taking simple but consistent measures.

.

just wondering have you been instructed to do so by drs or do you just do that?( either way is fine, you are protecting your child how you want to) just wondering as dd's boss has same allergy ( hospitalized a few times for it) and does not need to take such precautions ( know others with similar problems and just wondering if drs have changed the precautionary preceedures) his prblems usually come from eating something inadvertantly with peanuts or peanut oil so personally if this was me i wouldn't be eating in a buffet where something ould have inadvertantly gotten mixed in

ot and adjusting lame suit but i think it is too far that schools now "outlaw" foods due to one child's allergy ( ie local school no pb...the staple food of what ,1/2 it's attendees ???,because 1 child is allergic)...maybe train that 1 child
as if it's really "life threatening"( i know it can be) as he is going to have to learn to deal with it himself

That is ridiculous. I don't care what kind of allergies the kid has. If one is that concerned about allergies then they shouldn't get near the characters or anyone else for that matter. I can see wiping off a table or highchair but when you start wiping off people then I consider that more then a little nuts.
