It totally drives me insane when people use my name in a sentence:mad:

For instance...What do you want to do Lisa or I dont know Lisa where do you want to go for dinner...

Just makes me think I am being talked down to or something. Definatley high on the list of my pet peeves. Does this annoy anyone else or am I the only one?

I never thought about it before. I don't feel as though I'm being "talked down too" when it happens though.

Does it just bother you when it comes up in conversation or does it bother you if it is written, too?

I guess when it is spoken to me because I can actually hear it. I hope you are not asking because you are going to write "No Lisa, you are totally whacked" LOL:crazy:

It actually drives me nuts too.....verbally and even more written in an email.....like starting it out, "Hi Lisa" or "I will talk to you later Lisa".......I always thought I was a little weird thinking this......glad I am not the only one........maybe it's the name??;)

It doesn't bother me. When DH and I got engaged, we said that we were going to use our names instead of the generic "honey, baby, etc." that other people use a lot. So I hear my name a LOT.
IMO, "can you get me a towel, Lisa?" is a lot better than "Babe, can you get me a towel?"

Food for thought. Some people who have difficulty remembering names will make a point to use your name when they're talking to you so that it sticks in their head.

I was asking, Lisa, because I often use someone's name when I post a reply ;) Just wanted to try not to offend you in the future :teeth:

Doesn't bother me. I actually like it when someone says that. They make it more personal.

I actually hate it when I'm referred to as "she" or "her". It makes my skin crawl when I'm in a group and someone says something like "SHE turned in her forms", or "I gave it to HER". I'd rather hear my name in those instances.

It doesn't bother me at all. In fact, I do it all the time because it helps me remember people better and around here, I always feel it's a little bit more personable especially when there's SO many DISers!!:D

I'm funny that way, you can call me "hairy beast" just DON'T call me fat! :jester:

LOL LOL

Actually, it depends on the situation whether I mind someone using my name or not. Sometimes it's nice, and other times it almost seems like a put-down or a psychological device when my name is used.

Friendly person = ok

Telemarketer = not ok

LOL

I don't mind people using my name but I sign everything and introduce myself by my full name and 2 seconds into the conversation they shorten my name. I do answer to it and it is only a name so I really don't get too worked up about it but if someone says their name is "******" then I use that name and don't shorten it unless they tell me to. Why do people do that? I know I am not very tall but........

I dont mind it, but it all depends on the tone of voice of the speaker.

Its funny, but I have heard that when a member of the opposite sex does this, it is a way of expressing interest in you.

Also, some people do t just to help them remember your name. The more you say someones name, especially while looking at them, the more likely ou are to remember it.

I kind of like it - like someone else said - it feels more personal. I have a couple friends that do it & it really stands out because most people DON'T do it.

I tend to use names in sentences because I was taught that it was polite.

What I object to is being called "late for supper" - as my father always said! ;)

:rotfl: I have to agree with you!!:teeth:

It bugs me when my SO works my name into the conversation. For some reason, it makes me think I'm in trouble.;)

There's a lady at work that usually says my name 4-10 times in a 5 minute conversation. I think she does it to be personable, but it is annoying.

I do that a lot too, Katholyn.;) If I've ever offended anyone by doing that, please call me on it.:)

I am sorry Lisa if I have ever offended you in any of my short post.

I don't mind it as long as it's not excessive. There's one guy here at work who does that constantly and to everyone and it can get annoying.

There are two basic reasons why people do this and neither has anything to do with talking down to people.

I believe it's in the book "How To Win Friends and Influence People." This is a self development/motivation book that people read to help them do better in business. This book promotes the idea that hearing their own name is very pleasing and flattering to people. Of course, it doesn't say to beat someone to death with their name.

As Aurora63 mentioned, it's also a way to remember someone's name that you've just met, but again, if you can say it three or four times in the same meeting, you've probably got it down.

I think saying someone's name once per meeting is adequate for most circumstances.

The one thing that does bother me is people who get carried away with endearments, especially with strangers.
