eta: Okay, after reading all the responses and doing some thinking, I realize... it irks me when this happens before I'm aware of a thread and have had a chance to provide my own opinion

I'll see a lock on a thread and I'll think to myself, "Don't read it... don't read it... I know I'll just want to put in my 2 cents, but won't be able to."

Are you kidding? I see the lock and think "oooohhh! Juicy thread! and read it all." In fact, I have to go find this thead you're talking about.

I seldom get irritated by a message board...I'd rather laugh at stuff.

Actually, I find it more annoying when threads go *poof*. There was one last week that I was reading through and went to reply to, I can't even remember what it was about. I wrote out my reply and hit submit, and then it told me i had specified an invalid thread. While I was writing out my response they poofed it. I never even did figure out why because at the time it was a very civil thread. Perhaps they were worried the topic would head into dangerous waters. I don't know.

Poof threads suck

The only time it ever bothered me is when box of rains threads went poof. I was really following that thread alot. Not sure if it was she or the mods that poofed it but I felt like I didn't get to see the end of a movie or something.

Doesn't bother me at all. It's a thread on a discusssion board...not that big of a deal in the long run.

As far as the op saying word spelling is your peev-get a life.Not everyone has spell check intalled on thier computer.Are you a PERFECT SPELLER!!

Well, since you asked... yes, I am a perfect speller. An imperfect typist, but I spell correctly without using any spell-check program

I do see your point, and realize others do other things much better than I do Misspelling is somewhat understandable; "text-speak" when not texting, not so much. In fact, that's a big reason why many people NEED spell-check. Even using such a feature doesn't help when one doesn't recognize which is the correct version of the intended word.

Then there are times when spell-check just plain 'recognizes' the wrong word. In another thread, I think the topic was restaurants - notably French restaurants. Someone posted that the quality of a nearby French pub-like location exceeded that of Chefs de France... except spell-check picked up their version not as brasserie but as brassiere
