Does the please excuse absense letter really work and when to tell teacher?

For those that asked, I live in South Carolina.

During our meeting where we had our wrists slapped I was very quiet, but I vowed that if we were escalated to the district level I would walk in talking. LOL Thankfully that never happened.

I am a kindergarten teacher and I wish I could leave school to go to Disney.( I always wonder how parents would take it if the teacher said she was leaving for a vacation! LOL!) I do appreciate being told as soon as possible that your child is going however.
Please remember that make-up work is not the same as the teacher teaching the material. And true, missing school for one week won't kill them. My older kids don't want to be pulled out now due to the massive amount of make-up work that they would have to finish.
Please stop fretting about all of this. If you want to go on a vacation, go. Deal with the make-up work , buy the teacher a little gift for when you come back and have fun. Do teachers love when kids miss school for any reason other than illness, no. But, we are people too and will understand. Kindergarten is an important year of total learning, but one week won't be a big impact. Just remember every grade higher your child gets means that he/she probably won't want to leave school to go to Disney. Enjoy !

The problem with the highlighted sentence is this: it's NOT just about the teacher's reaction. These days parents have to be concerned about charges brought against them by a DA due to attendance policies.

It's funny that you say that because my daughter's teacher (grade 1) left school for a week to go to Disney with her family! I had no problem with it...but if they are going to give the student's family problems, then shouldn't the teachers have to follow the same rules?

Nope. Apples and Oranges.

Actually, most teachers are held to a much higher attendance standard than thier students. I get 2 personal days a year where I do nto have to give a reason to be absent, just let the school know in advance. My kdis get 8. 4 each semester. Teachers who are taking off for Disney have prpbably either combined that trip with holidays or have saved up personal days to go. Our district doesn't allow banking personal days, so I have to go in conjunction with a holiday. Your daughter's teacher is very lucky and certianly in the minority. I still don't feel like it is the same thing. Do the adults in your household have the same bedtime as the kids? Teachers are adults, and have different rules. There are differnt vacation standards within the same company for managment and hourly as well. Different rules apply to different groups of pople, plain and simple.

For our 2 trips I had no problem. I gave it 4-6 weeks ahead of time.

BTW, they were only in elementary school. Middle school who knows?
