Does the iPhone really make a good gift idea?

I've read that the iPhone makes a great gift, but unless you're giving it to a spouse or to someone you've confirmed wants one and doesn't mind paying for a data plan (assuming they're not already doing so), I don't see how this makes a good gift idea. How do you assume the person receiving the gift is willing and/or able to afford the extra $30-40 a month?

I love my IPhone and think its a great gift idea, however, there is the problem with what to do with the monthly bill and plan. Unless you want to pay for that every month as well.

Personally, I think it's rude to give a gift that requires the recipient to spend their own money unless you know they want it and would like to get it for themselves.

These are my thoughts as well.

Service, plus dataplan, plus a texting plan will cost more than that.

I'd suggest a similar $ amount gift card to the Apple Store or www.apple.com and say they may choose to purchase an Iphone if they'd like.

As long as it comes with a receipt so the person can return it if unwanted it's fine, otherwise it is way too presumptuous.

There are lots of reasons other than money why someone wouldn't want one, I didn't want one & still don't. DH loves his but to me they are huge, heavy, too delicate, too complicated and require way too much attention. No thanks

I would assume that the ad is suggesting that an iphone be given as a gift to your child, spouse, or other family member. Someone who you would be paying for their service. I don't think they mean to suggest you buy them for friends who may not want smart phone service.

There's also the fact that unless you are signing the recipient up for phone service, you are going to pay the unsubsidized price for the phone, which is hundreds more.

Are they even sold unsubsidized now? Initially ATT/Apple wouldn't sell them unless they had a plan in place.
