Does the heat / humidity really bother your dog?

We have a yorkie llahsa mix. His hair is on the longer side and he definitely needs a grooming. But the heat seems to be really getting to him. I'm concerned and hope he isn't sick. He seems to be eating okay and doing all the other daily stuff;) He has plenty of water available to him and seems to be drinking it(it's hard to tell sometimes because we also have 2 cats) He just seems really laxidaisical(spelled wrong I bet)

Is he outside? I don't know about where you are, but our summers are chock full of the evil twins heat and humidity. It's like walking into a steam bath. I have a Newfie, and anything about 80 is really too hot for her. Maybe a hair cut would help him out?

Honestly no animal should be left outside in this heat. My paents have a chow chow and he is only ever out long enough to do his thing and then he is whining to get back in IMMEDIATELY :rotfl: and our pup is out long enough to go on walks and do his thing but then he is back in as well......

Its just been too hot here this summer for all critters!

Oh my goodness, yes. She is a St. Bernard. They were not bred for this weather! We have air conditioning and she still suffers. Best place for her is in the basement with DH while he works as it is very cool down there.

I grew up in south Alabama with a Saint. I can well remember how he suffered in that heat. We had a cold water creek on our property and every so often he'd just take himself down there for a plunge.

I have an old standard poodle. We keep him cut short in the summer, but the heat is really getting to him. He's 10 now and has seizures, arthritis, and COPD. So he has some breathing issues on a good day. I just keep him indoors pretty much all day and only allow him out to go to the bush. No running around or chasing a ball(oh, yeah, he tore his ACL last month too.) Minky is content to lie on the hardwoods where it's nice and cool.

Both my dogs hate the heat. They go outside do their business and knock at the door immediately to come back in. If I fill their pool and we are outside they will stay out for a little while but even then they would much rather be in the AC...like me!:rotfl:

They are Mastiffs. They stay out in the snow longer than the heat. If its raining they turn into camels and hold it forever. Big chickens.

We have a Husky and have lived in FL, AL, GA, NY and TN with her.

The past 2 summer in Southern GA (coming from Northern NY) has really kicked her furry little behind. She eats and drinks normally, but has no desire to do anything but position herself under the fan and vents for that 'perfect' breeze.

I have a sheltie and she ALWAYS gets a summer shave (we got her when we were in Louisiana and now we live in VA. She stayed shaved most of the year in LA). We call her out little fox in the summer cause that's what she looks like. She LOVES to be outside when the weather is nice, but if it's hot, she goes out long enought to do her biz and that's it. She'll go out from about 6 AM to 8/9 AM and then maybe in the evening when it cools off some, otherwise, she enjoys the A/C.

So yes, dogs are affected by the heat!

Pugs + heat + humidity = NOT FRIENDLY

They go out, do there business, then back inside

I have a purebred lhasa and he has a very difficult time in the heat, and I keep him clipped short, in a puppy cut. He basically just goes out to do his business when it's this hot.

I have a dog that loves to go outside, even in the heat. She is a short-haired "mystery mix" of about 25 pounds. She loves to go roll around in the grass, go on a walk, and chase bugs, even in the middle of the day. :confused3 Her stamina is not as long in the middle of the day, but she rarely wants to come inside. I am the one dragging HER in; I don't want her to get too hot. After playing outside, she loves to lay on the floor...it is stained concrete and it is cool.

LOL, both our current Saint and our previous Saint mix would do this. One step out the door, realize it's raining and they turn and say "never mind. I'll go when it stops." Of course, both of them would willingly go in the muddy pond  .

Wow, I can't imagine them down south!

I asked our groomer about shaving her for the summer (dog is a long haired Saint) and the groomer said that coat actually keeps some of the heat out :confused3

We have a bichon. She won't go out in the rain. She will hold it until midnight if need be.

She has walked out the door, seen that the temp is over 80, turned around and walked back in :rotfl:.

When I want to make sure she is REALLY hydrated, I melt a little vanilla ice cream into some water and she laps it right up. ;)

We have been keeping him inside. Just going out to do his stuff. He seems better this afternoon. My husband dipped him into the pool(which he loves, he will actually float on a raft with my daughter, so funny) and that helped. I think I will get him groomed this week. We are up in Maine and it has been way more hot and humid then it has been a long time. Thanks for all the replies>

Lol! My Newfie begs to go out when it's raining!! She plays in the waterspout.

Exactly. Because of their undercoat ( keeps them warm in the cold weather ) if you shave them down -or any dog with a coat like that, they can't regulate their body temparture. You can clip them short, but never, ever shave them.
