Does the airline ever measure luggage?

Be careful of luggage size if it close to the top limit of the airlines. You probably will go over 50 lbs, if that is your weight limit. I have a suitcase that is under the size limit, but I have never been able to use it because of weight. I really do not want to travel with a suitcase that is not full. So I only the use the "medium" size suitcase. If it was totally packed, it still will go over 50 lbs. So weight should be more of a consideration than size.

United - yes for weight..but allowed us to take some books/laundry out and transfer to carry-on to get below 50 lbs a few times
