Hey there, I am new to the Disney Vacation club. I have 250 points. I thought it was a great idea to share with the family.

Does renting point really work?

Can you tell me some good expereinces and some bad ones about renting?

Good--we rented and liked it and then bought into it.

Bad--we rented out 50 points and then the people (co-worker) canceled trip (post-poned 1 year) so now I have 50 points that I was not planning on using.

I have rented points out to others, as well as rented them myself. If you are short a few points on a ressie, it makes good sense to rent from another member. My experiences are mostly positive. There are some negatives to renting out to others--
1. 20 million emails from people, and most are just kind of interested to see if there are any vacancies at a particular resort, but don't want to rent from you, they just want you to check, like your were CRO, or something.

2. People who rent and then back out, leaving you with points that you told others was sold out.

3. Cancellations less than 31 days before arrival, leaving your pts in holding.

4. People who sound like you have a deal, then try to renegotiate at the last minute.

5. People who agree, you make the ressies, then they disappear.

6. People who haven't done their research, so they don't know that weekends and weekdays have different amounts of points, and they think you are trying to scam them.

But a big positive--you make lots of new friends, and those people will return next year to rent from you!

We are saving money for our adoption this year so rented out our points....it would have been our first year to use....anyway it was very positive. I did get lots of emails and one very bossy lady.....whom I did not rent to.........but in the end rented all but 24 points................and all money was received within days. If they cancel, they will lose their money. I had good luck with it and hope you do too.

Thank you all for your comments...

I am not planning on renting for a few years. But it does help to look at possibilities.

I figured that this.

My use year is Febuary.

I would start to advertise, in the August before. Due to that 11 month/7 month reservation thing.

I would believe that I would not make a reservation for a person until I verified money payment.

Does that sound reasonable?::MickeyMo

What's the best way to receive payment for your rented points....paypal??

So far has been a great experience.

I posted on the rent/trade Board a couple of months ago (August 2004 use year points). I made a reservation once the renter said "if you can get the dates, I'll rent" (no risk to me as I could easily cancel).

After I got the reservation I asked for 2/3 payment of the rental fee within 10 days. I accepted a personal check (again, no risk to me, as I could just cancel). I also sent an e-mail detailing our agreement (i.e., they rent..pay 2/3 within 10 days and 1/3 no later than 60 days before travel) and had her e-mail me back agreeing to those terms.

I will receive final payment by September (again, no risk - other than lost time and effort - as I can still bank all the points if she were to cancel). If I do not receive final payment I can cancel and bank the points. As the 2/3 is a down payment, she would forfeit that for cancelling.

It seems the "risk" in renting is (mostly) the renter trusting the DVC Member. So far, my transaction has been remarkeably smooth and I anticipate my renter and her family will have a great Disney vacation! :)

Sounds good to me! I have some points I plan to rent soon. Have to finish some planning before I take the plunge, but it looks relatively simple.

Glad to hear the good stories.

We are new DVC members and our contract came with points that were expiring soon. We just finished renting to a nice DVC family from Illinois. :wave2: We had posted it on the rent/trade board. We used PayPal and worked out well for all of us.

I was surprised at just how many people were bold enough to ask for a better deal. (We were only asking 7.50/point, which was a 25% discount over going rental rate).

Overall, it was a postive experience. But, we will be saving any future points for ourselves. ;)

I rented a studio for 3 days in February. My husband and I wanted to visit a DVC resort before we bought ourselves. The rental of points went smoothly until we returned.

We had origionally requested a studio for three nights, but could only get the studio for 2 nights and would have to be in a 1 bedroom for the first night. We were put on a waitlist for the studio for the first night. I went ahead and send the person the money for the 3 nights--one night in the 1 bedroom and 2 nights in the studio. Shortly before we left on the trip, the waitlist came through and we ended up in a studio for all 3 nights.

When we returned, the person I rented from exchanged e-mails several times about my refund of the excess money I paid. They promised to send the refund several times, but to this day I have not seen the money. It's only a small amount, around $100, but I would really like it refunded to me. After many e-mails the person dropped out of site and will no longer read or answer my e-mails.

So---be careful when renting points from another person. People just trying to rent points get stuck sometimes, too! :(

BTW--we loved the short stay at a DVC resort and ended up buying SSR after our return.
