My mother (she's only 56 now)was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis 14.5 yrs ago and was doing OK until this last year. She sees people that are not there, she is afraid someone is going to hurt her, and sometimes she doesn't know who we are. 3 weeks ago she was sent into a rehab setting and a week later was admitted to the hosp (I'm calling it psychosis) for a week, then this Tues was put back into rehab and then last nite was rushed to the ER again cuz she didn't know; 1)where she was, 2) who we were, and she think we are all out to get her.

She see spiders and cobwebs all over the place when they are not there.

Dr's have done MRI, CT scan, Spinal tap, EEG, they have her hooked up (IV, tubes everywhere) she (pardon my expression) looks like the older people you see in nursing homes that are sleeping all the time, You know when they are not really here with us.
The Dr's dont have an answer and I am afraid that she will end up in a home like to elder people...... I can't see her coming back to us the way she was.............

I will be going back up this morning to check on her and all I can do is hope and pray.......damn she is too young for this life.

thanks for letting me vent...

{{HUGS}} sorry about your mom. my father was diagnosed with MS around 20yrs ago. i know that he doesnt do any of the things that you are describing. he seems to be in relatively good health.

i dont know if it causes psychosis. maybe do some online research of your own. i hope you get answers soon.

That's terrible. I'm sorry your family is going through this.

Have the doctors ruled out a stroke? My late FIL had strokes at the stem of the brain (or something like that), which was very uncommon and the doctors at one hospital were preparing to admit him to psych ward because he was mumbling about snakes shooting out of his fingertips, etc. I insisted that we take him to another hospital and it was then determined that he was having a series of mini-strokes!

I am so sorry to hear about your Mom.:( I have MS, and have done tons of research on it since I was diagnosed in 1990. MS can cause cognitive problems, such as memory loss, anxiety, etc. I haven't read anything about psychosis, but I suppose anything is possible when you're dealing with the brain and spinal cord. Perhaps it's something completely separate from MS, and hopefully there will be meds to help her.

Please feel free to PM me anytime you need someone to lean on. MS is not only difficult for the person who has it, it's a strain on the family as well. My DH has been a saint over the years.;) My thoughts and prayers are with you and your mom for a quick resolution to this.

Oh Tammie. How frightening and heart breaking. Whatever may be the underlying cause for this situation, I hope they can get it cleared up soon and your mother doesn't have these scary episodes anymore.

{{{HUGS}}} my friend. Hang in there.

I have MS diagnosed 2 yrs ago and I don't think that type of thing happens. I do know anxiety, mood swings and just losing it at time sis common. I am not saying that this couldn't be cause by MS but I hope that the doctors find out what is causing your mothers problems. My prayers are with her and your family

Has she by any chance changed medications recently, even to go to a generic from a name brand or something? I don't know why, but this sounds like a drug-related thing to me. I've never heard of anything like that happening to someone with MS. Though a minor stroke could be possible.

Whatever the case, sending P&PD your way and I hope they find a treatable cause shortly.

I'm so sorry this happens to your mom. :( Possible organic brain syndrome or alzheimers? My mom was in her late 50's/early 60's when she was diagnosed with OBS. It's so sad. Blessings to your mom. I hope they find the cause soon.

The Dr's ruled out a stroke per MRI, her MS plax hasn't changed, however the neurologist did say that there is some cloudiness around the left side of her brain (whatever that means?), and that in cases where the MS has declined over a period that there is also a loss of brain tissue (where did it go?). I don't know now I am more confused because they "can't" say what the cause is.

She has not changed meds in almost a year, but looking at a sign up on her wall and a med chart that my father has all written down...........I have really been kept in the dark..............she is on some meds for diabetes, some for cholesterol, some for seizures, some for hig blood pressure, ................well when I read all that and counted up to 12 different drugs, its no wonder she can't function. So they said that if she isnt talking by tomorrow they will run another CT scan and see whats up.
And you know what is sad? She kinda new who I was today.....and she couldnt say my name.....and I know she is in there just trying to get out and there isn't a damn thing she can do.....it was like she was trying to communicate and just couldn't.

I will keep you posted and thanks again for being there.

Tammie

I'm so sorry about your mom. My DH has MS and is on medication for seizures. The only time he ever gets confused is when he has a seizure, or right after having one. Then it goes away.

My DM had a very progressive form of MS and although there was a decrease of cognitive functioning she never experienced this type of thing.

I too would wonder about the medications and whether she is reacting to one or a combination of meds.

My grandmother had a condition caused by the wrong mix of drugs that caused her to have the exact symptoms of Parkinson's disease - in fact, one doctor actually diagnosed her with it. It wasn't until someone in our family looked in a PDR, and there as plain as day was the information we were looking for. One of the drugs she was on clearly had Parkinson's like symptoms as a side effect. Once she stopped the meds, the symptoms went away.

I would recommend that you get ahold of a PDR and look up each drug she is on. I haven't heard that MS can cause psychosis, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if this was a side effect to the meds she is on.

Please know that I am thinking of you and your family and pray that you will get to the bottom of this. Keep us posted, o.k.?

I am a speech-language pathologist. I work in the hospital setting. I have worked with many people with MS, strokes and other neurological disorders.

I don't believe that MS causes hallucinations or psychosis. That sounds like another cause...I have seen many people whose meds are off have symptoms like this.

The "cloudiness" in her left brain likely accounts for her speech difficulties. This is also not a common situation with MS. Sounds like a stroke or TIA (mini-stroke). MS sometimes can lead to cognitive deficits (trouble with memory, thinking skills, problem solving, attention).

I hope the doctors will be able to come up with some answers for you very soon and that your mom will recover.

When I was first diagnosed with MS, I had terrible nightmares and woke myself screaming. I was sent to a shrink and he said I was OK. Since being put on Copaxone the nightmares are gone. The MS is progressing and I'm having MS related mini strokes. My head will get so sore in one spot and I get such a bad head ache. My right side is affected, numbness in my face, droopy eyelid, trouble walking, trouble putting sentences together quickly and respiratory problems making me take several deep breaths automatically as if I'm suffocating- but I'm not. Doc said I will not heal completely and there's nothing that can be done. He said to avoid stress.

The thread you bumped is dated 2003, how come you didn't just start a new thread for your first post here at the DIS?
