If we have extra CS credits, can we combine them for a TS meal? Or if we decide on a TS, can we use one CS credit to "pay" towards the cost of a meal if we're out of TS credits? Newbie here, so sorry if this has been covered!

Unfortunately it doesn't work that way. Occasionally during free dining you can trade a TS in for a CS and a snack, but it never works to trade them up.

Can you suggest how and where to do this trade? My DH and I are going out to TS one night and leaving the kids with a sitter. Want to use the kids' TS meals but don't have any ideas on how to use TS for kids and us at different places. Thanks

You'll have to see if Disney makes an announcement regarding trading TS for CS during free dining. They usually do. The trade usually includes either an extra snack or some merchandise item.

You can always split the check if you go to a TS with extra credits - pay OOP for you and use the kids' credits for them. Unfortunately you can't use the kids' credits to buy yourself a TS meal, unless you don't mind eating off the children's menu.
