Calling a UK mobile phone number from USA, does the uk person get charged for recieving the call.

I'm trying to search for a cheap network for a PAYG so kids can phone there dad

No the person in the UK receiving the call should not be charged anything but the person making the call in the US will be charged a fortune, I am with 3, they charge £1.40/min or 99p/min to receive while in US.

You would be far better buying a phone card in Florida or using Skype if you have a smart phone. I am trying Skype this time, it costs 1.4p/min to ring a UK landline or 14.9p/min to ring a mobile http://www.skype.com/intl/en-gb/prices/payg-rates/#cc=GB

Thanks, I have smart phone also on three, however the uk recipient doesn't.

May get a sim card loaded it with megabucks :rotfl2::rotfl2:

With Skype the UK recipient doesn't need Skype installed, it only needs to be on the phone being used in the US.

Great! The same time you posted that about 3 I had just come off the phone to them asking that very question as my son has a contract with them (in my name).

Having heard their prices, they have switched-off International Internet roaming.

However, our 3 phones from Virgin Holidays arrived today - poorly packed but quite cute!

Getting closer now.

Hi David, Internet roaming fees are crazy, we turn roaming off as soon as we leave the UK. Hope the Virgin phones work well, a few seem to be using them this summer.

Yes, getting very close, Can't wait to see the new ship.:thumbsup2

Really confused :confused: I popped into the three store, as I had other issues with my handset!! Anyway I started talking to the salesman and mentioned getting skype.

I was told it would be cheaper buying a PAYG or get the uk person to ring me, as there is a data charge with skype.

I tried to explain myself but somehow came way confused

I used skype to phone my Mum on her landline during our recent holiday to WDW. it was a very cheap and easy way to keep in touch. Opened up skype on my macbook, typed in her landline number and dialled. Very clear sound quality and we blethered away for ages. Much easier for me than buying an international phone card as I have done in the past. No extra number to phone, typing in of pins, followed by phone numbers and endless menus to go through.
In order to use skype to phone someone without skype on a device for the least amount of money, you would need to use a PC, macbook, Ipod touch (with the supplied headphones which have a wee mic on them) or your iphone through wifi. If you attempt to phone use skype through international roaming you will end up running up mega large bills. We all have smartphones and turn of everything the minute we get on the plane. The only device which is free for 3G connections is DDs kindle.

As Mrs TT says, if you use data roaming to connect to skype it will cost a fortune. To use Skype you need an internet connection, we always have in in any hotel we stay in either free or paid for so we have no problem using Skype. If you don't have internet connection then you need to find it free, eg in Earl of Sandwich, Wulfgang Puck Express etc. then it just costs the fees I posted earlier.
So yes the 3 salesman was correct in one way but not if you have an internet connection.
