Does it bug you when cashiers comment on your purchases?

Lately I've noticed that when I go through the checkout in my favorite local stores, the cashier often comments on what I'm purchasing. The comments are usually something like "Oh, I've tried that bread and it's great," etc. The other day I bought a diet soda for myself and a big box of cookies for a neighbor's birthday party and the cashier said (in a good-natured joking way) "Yep, diet soda and cookies--a winning combination!"
Yesterday I was buying baby formula for my two-year-old (doctor's orders) and the cashier pointed at my DS and lauged "Baby formula for HIM? How old IS that kid, anyway?"
I dread the trip through the checkout aisle when I'm purchasing something really "private" (PMS medicine or whatever ;) ) but thankfully no one has commented on those things!

I don't know why comments on my purchases bug me (and it's not like they make me angry or upset, it's just that they are a bit embarrassing for some reason). I guess I'm just too shy!
Anyhow, just thinking out loud here. Does anyone have any thoughts to share? :)

I comment on peoples purchases at my work, but I dont work at a supermarket... part of my job is to make the customer feel as if they are making a great purchase and that they will be happy with it. I am sealing the deal that one of my co-workers started in getting someone to try a new product... So I often say "I have this in my bathroom and love it!" or "you're going to LOVE the pumpkin mask - and if you don't, remember you can bring it back even after you've used it!" or "these soaps are a great deal!" etc etc

Would those kind of comments make you uneasy, too? I just wonder if I'm putting people off by doing that... hmmm...

I'm just glad the cashier in the drugstore doesn't make coments. though I did get some funny looks the other night when I was shopping for myself and my two daughters.

aimeedyan - those comments don't bother me, I agree with the OP, it's the grocery store ones.

Even though I love to check out other people's groceries and guess what they are making, or if they have kids, etc. I never comment on it! I just keep it to myself.

I've had a cashier comment on my lunch or what a good deal something was, it seems a little wierd.

That drives me NUTS at the grocery store..anywhere else i dont mind but for some reason it does bug me at the Supermarket!

Most other places I find it to be a pleasant encounter...I used to talk peoples ears off when I worked on Main Street...:) and when I was a jewelry salesman..but thats a given.

Now when the cute girl at toys R Us talk to me I jump at the chance  :P

Bugs me when anyone that isn't paying for my purchases makes comments about them. My money, my right to buy what I want and no one elses business!

Usually I don't mind, but when I was picking up a hpt when I was pregnant with DD I had the cashier as if it "is this a good thing or bad thing, did you plan it?" I was going to bite my tongue, but I finally said, "I would hope it's planned after nearly two years of trying and countless infertility tests. And yes, it's a good thing"

One of my bigger pet peves! It bugs me in a grocery store but not in other stores. I wonder why?

I don't mind when it is a nice comment. Otherwise keep it to yourself!

What I don't like is when they tell me that I could get something in another brand cheaper than the brand I am purchasing. Let's say laundry detergent. Sure I can buy another brand cheaper but I like the brand I am using. It usually happens when a certain item is on sale. Not everyone buys stuff that they don't normally use just because its on sale.

I don't mind when it's something like 'oh that's a good product' or 'that's a good deal'. Nobody should be negative about what a person is purchasing such as you encountered. Once in a drugstore the cashier told me that her grand daughter used the product I was buying and it caused her a bad infection resulting in a really uncomfortable surgical proceedure. I was really uncomfortable with that situation.

tricia.

I dont think thats ever happened to me, thank goodness.
What really gets me is when a waitress comments on what I ate. If it were up to me they would get no tip. They are lucky DH is nice.

In the same vain, I hate when people at work comment on my lunch:

"Oh, you eat THAT"?????

I really truly do never comment on that because I know how much it bothers me. Same at the grocery stores...they sell the stuff, so it's not like it's something that no one else uses.

Do you happen to work at BBW? I used to work at the one in the mall in Killeen. Just being nosey!

::yes:: If the cashier just says something nice, it's ok. But I really hate it when they ask me a lot of questions about why I'm buying something or make jokes. I really dread those mid-week trips when I usually buy random things. They've said things like "Do you feed your child only junk food?" The answer is "No, I'm buying snacks for his classroom at school."

I have to admit that when I'm feeling stressed or have PMS I'm a lot more sensitive about this. :teeth:

Sorry to rant! I'll move on now.

When my husband shops alone, he gets comments from elderly women, not the cashiers. If he's putting tomatoes into a bag, they remark that they would never pay that much for a tomato. Once he bought frozen dinners that he wanted to take to work for lunch, and one woman commented on how much they cost and said he must be a bachelor! It annoys him, but I find it funny.

I can remember one time years ago I went in and bought some feminine products and some ice cream and the cashier made a comment about "needing chocolate ice cream" because of my other purchase. It embarassed me no end.

But now Jungle Josh, I am married you know! LOL puckerup:

I always try to find something to say about my guest purchases, but I do work at Toys R Us. Just the other night I had a conversation with a lady, and her son, about his "special" purchase he got for making it into "big boy pants." We probally talked for five minutes about it (there was no one else in my department) and my manager thought it was strange. But then again, he is single so ....

I guess I don't mind the "nosey" comments as I just take it as a part of them trying to give better service. I also have not had any that were truly "nosey." I do a lot of my shopping on the way home from work, so I know most of the late night cahiers at my food store. They have asked how good something I was buying is, but we "know" each other so again, it does not bother me.

This post reminds me of the BankOne commercial with the annoying check out girl commenting on the credit cards.
