Does it @#$% anyone else off when....

I got a chuckle while in Orlando and it came from a fellow runner. I was in Wal-mart picking up a few things and had my Goofy Shirt on. I saw a couple (slim and trim) with the orange Gooyf Challenge wrist bans on. As they walked away from me I saw her say something to him and then he turned and looked back at me. I guess it was because I do not have the typical "runner" body (I used to when I ran for Georgia Southern University but not now). Anyway, I got a chuckle out of that because I shocked these people that the fat guy was doing the Goofy.

:rotfl: You sound like my DH. he's "old" at 48 and always says that he is running in the "short-legged old fat man" division. he looks nothing like a runner yet completed an Ironman. Let'em talk! :rotfl2:

That reminds me of a funny story he likes to tell. While doing a triathlon, during the bike this young kid in his 20s rides by DH and says, "See ya, Pops!"

After the bike comes the run and DH ran past him and finished before him. As he ran by the young whippersnapper, DH salutes him and says, "That's 'Pops Sir ' to you!" :cool1:

After the race the guy came over and talked to him and said he'd learned a big life lesson that day! :rotfl:

FOrgive me, but I just have to lol. It's a joke to us now. WHen people don't understand, it's even mroe fun to tell them "how long of a marathon you ran." Just before we left Dh put a license plate holder on my car. AFter I sdiscovered it (4 days later :upsidedow ), he said, "I got you the one that says 26.2 - Marathoner so people would know how long of a marathon you ran." :rotfl:

People will never understand, so you just have to laugh. It's not worht teh frustratoin.

While you certainly should be extremely proud about your accomplishment, what really cheeses me is that those of us who did the 5K that weekend were treated so much differently than everyone else. Our finishers medal was rubber, we got no official timing and we're not included in any of the nifty post-race website stuff. For some of us a 5K is all we can do. I hurt both my knees during training and have been advised against running at all, but I still did the 5K and shaved 30 seconds off my previous best. We have acheived a personal goal, just like 1/2 and full runners, and should be treated as such. Nothing like being told that your race is nothing but a "fun run" and isn't important.

I kind of like the rubber medals - I was scared to death that I was going to damage my bling after last year's Goofy, but I didn't have to worry about the 5k one.

I think the reason that there are two reasons where there is no official timing: first, Disney bills it as a "fun run", probably to encourage more people to come out and do it. They're aiming at spouses and kids of people running the half or the full. Second, if they switched to chip timing, it would probably add a significant amount to the cost. It would still be cheaper than the half or full, but it could still add $10 or $20. (Actually - Disney would add the cost. The 5k is already overpriced, compared to a lot of chipped 5k races, but adding chips would let the Mouse increase the price.)

I do think that there should be more post-race stuff about the 5k on the website. Even if they aren't going to do results, they could put up a bunch of pics or something.

Anyway - take pride in your accomplishment. Lots of people will never even try a 5k - you ran one, injured and still set a PR.
