Does free birthday dessert mean no DDP dessert?

Hey, does anyone know, if you get a free birthday dessert, do they not let you choose your dessert that comes with the DDP? I mean it would stink if they bring you out a cupcake when you had your heart set on some fancy chocolate dessert, and now you can't get it. :)

That's an excellent question that could pertain to our party. Wonder what the answer is.

Well, I don't have actual experience. But we've celebrated numerous birthdays at the parks and the places that choose to give you a free dessert, do so at their discretion. Meaning they are not obligated to give you one and if they do, you don't have to buy it.

Not all park goers are on DDP, I don't think restaurant management will discriminate against those on the plan by not offering them a birthday perk.

You pay for the DDP and it stipulates that you get a dessert as part of your Table service, so they would not deny you the chance to choose a dessert if they bring you a cupcake as a celebratory gesture.

On the other hand, if they know it is your birthday, they may ask you to choose your dessert and then put the candle/sing the song to accompany it rather than offering you an additional dessert.

I think you'll end up with plenty to eat either way!!

That actually happened to me at Le Cellier last yr..I had my heart set on the maple creme brulee and they came out with this special dessert that was not on the menu it was a cup made of chocolate full of chocolate mousse and raspberrys and they had rubbed an impression of the castle on the plate and all very pretty and tasty but I was so dissapointed that I wasnt gonna get to order my brulee I just didnt have the heart to ask for it after they brought out such a beautiful dessert..lol

DH and I celebrated our anniversary at the Concourse Steak House May 2006. We were on the dining plan. I had pre-ordered and paid for a cake (a sugar-free cake) as part of our celebration that evening. When our waitress realized we had pre-ordered our dessert and would not be having the dessert included in the dining plan, she was kind enough to include two side items we had ordered with our dinner. I had mushrooms with my steak and DH had a skewer of shrimp.

As I said it was very kind of our waitress to do this. We in no way expected WDW to adjust our dinner bill because we had made a different choice. So we did experience a little magic at our waitress' discretion.

I have no actual experience but I would think that a complimentary b-day dessert would be aside from the DDP (it IS complimentary) so you should be able to order another dessert of your choosing.

We celebrated my dd's birthday in part eating at Garden Grill. They brought our table a birthday cake and nothing else. I was looking forward to eating a bite of yet another cool desert and I HATE let me repeat HATE bakery cakes. But well I was pretty full so I didnt bother pushing the issue. Didnt ask and dont know what would have happened had I. But a good way to keep this from happening is (1) dont mention it when booking and/or (2) when discussing it with the waiter...bring it up your self if you have to...you could say something like It's my birthday and I have been so looking forward to celebrating with a your creme brule. Or if you arent the birthday person but dont want whatever special thing is offered, you could bring it up to the waiter how much you have been looking forward to such and such desert so when the time comes he will be more likely to makesure to give choices.

We swent to Lecellier for our anniv and we were able to get our DDP desert and then LeCellier brought out the special desert too, we were so full, but we tasted it. Here is a pic.

I think not letting you choose a dessert because they bring you a free birthday cake or cupcake is wrong. If it is supposed to be free but they don't let you get dessert you are paying for it unless you are on free dining. Especially if it is a cupcake, how much does a cupcake really cost them, the desserts on the menu are way more costly I'm sure. I don't think it's right for them not to give you a choice, most people would choose to have a dessert off of the menu. Makes no sense to me. :confused3
