Hi,

I'm not a DVC member, but am using a friend's points this Sept. and am staying a BWV -which I am very happy about. I'm still thinking if I should buy into DVC or not and find people on these boards are more informative than the salespeopl. Anyway, out of curiosity - I know sometimes Disney hotels upgrade guests to better rooms for whatever reason - does this every happen to DVC members? Has anyone ever been upgraded from their original ressie? Like from a studio to a one-bedroom or to concerige service or to a better view...As I said, I'm just curious.

Thanks
Wendybird

It's very rare, especially with points. It usually only happens when there is a situation where a room is taken out of service for maintenance reasons.

Timeshares are different from hotel reservations. You usually get what you paid for. Unless, like DebbieB stated, there is a maintenance problem of some sort and there are no other rooms in your category available.

If you ask for an upgrade and one is available, your good friend's points may be used to pay for that upgrade. I'd be pretty angry if my points disappeared because someone using them didn't understand the consequences of their requests. For that reason, we use our points and only ask friends or family to stay with us.

If you are staying at a DVC resort I think you would be way out of line asking for a upgrade without expecting to be charged for the points.

OTOH On Labor Day weekend 2001 we decided Friday morning to go to WDW the next day for a three nights. Of course there wasn't anything available at a DVD resort so we stayed at the Poly on points. When we checked in the CM upgraded us to Concierge Level.

I think we you are using points to stay at a non-DVC resort or a cruise the situation is different.

Thanks for the info. I have no desire to upgrade - I have a 2-bedroom at BWV standard view - exactly what I wanted. My friend had points she wasn't using this year and I paid her to use them - it worked out well for both of us. I am very happy. As I said, I was just curious. So far the salespeople I've spoken to have given me some wrong information. One told me if my friend gave me all her DCV info I could make the reservations myself - which I know is wrong from what everyone says on these boards. Also I remember when I first looked into DVC they were selling Hilton Head as home base and salesman acted as if your home base didn't matter - that you can book anywhere - I know you can book anywhere, but home base is a big deal if you want to book more than 7 months out and trust me Hilton Head is not where I would want to go every year. So now if I have a question or am curious about something I will ask the experts here instead of calling DVC sales. If I decide to join DVC - you guys should get a cut of the commission!
Thanks again for the info....Wendybird

Sounds like you are paying great attention.... and are very close to becoming a well informed DVC member.

That is funny. My wife and I took our son to WDW in May of 1999. That was the first time I had been there since I was a kid. I was hooked. I saw the signs for DVC at the park but never spoke with anyone about it.

The day I got back I searched on DVC and the DIS boards popped up. I spent 2-3 days reading the threads about DVC then I called the DVC Sales Rep and told her how many points I wanted. She said "but you have never talked to us about it, don't you have any questions?" I said, "nope this is the easiest sale you will ever make just send me the contract." :)
